Методическая разработка внеклассного мероприятия «Две великие реки»

“Two great rivers- two great nations”

11 класс

 

Цели и задачи: 1. Повысить интерес к изучению английского языка.

                          2. Познакомить учащихся с американским поэтическим

                              наследием и музыкальной культурой.

                           3.Познакомить с произведениями русских художников,

                              поэтов, композиторов, посвященных великой русской реки

                              Волге.

                           4. Развивать умения работать с аутентичным материалом.

                           5. Развивать умения пользоваться сетью Интернет как     

                               средством получения информации.

                           6. Формировать у учащихся навыки сотрудничества, навыки

                               коллективного взаимодействия.

 

Оформление кабинета: карты США и России, выставка работ учащихся-       

                                        перевод статей о реке Миссисипи.

 

Подготовительный этап:

    - осуществление поиска информации о реке Миссисипи, стихов и песен,     

      посвященных реке в информационной сети Интернет;

    - поиск информации о Волге, произведений русских художников, поэтов,

      композиторов, посвященных великой русской реке Волге;

   

Ход мероприятия:

 

Teacher: Good-afternoon, dear friends! It is a great pleasure to welcome you here.    

               Our meeting will have two parts. The first one is a presention of the

               Mississippi River. The second one is a presentation of the Volga River.

               Some of the Earth’s rivers are closely connected with the distincts

               nations. They are the Seine in France, the Ganges in India, the

               Mississippi in the USA and the Volga in Russia.

               To begin with the Mississippi River we should say some information

               about the USA. Look at the map and get aquainted with the geographical

               position of the USA.

 Pupil 1:  The United States of America is the fourth largest country in the world.

               The USA lies in the central part of North America. The total area of the

               Country is about nine and a half million square kilometers. Its western

               Coast is washed by the Pacific Ocean. Its eastern coast is washed by the

               Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. The USA borders on Canada in

               The North and on Mexico in the south. It has a sea-border with Russia.

                   The climate of the country varies greatly from Arctic in Alaska through

                Continental in the central part to subtropical in the south.

               The USA is a federal republic. It consists of fifty states and the District of   

               Columbia. The capital of the country is Washington D. C. The population

               of the USA is about 250 million people. The flag of the USA is called

                “ Stars and Stripes.” There are three colors on the flag  of the USA. They

               are red, white and blue. As there are 50 states in the USA, there are 50

               stars on the American flag. The American flag has 13 stripes: 7 red

               stripes and 6 white stripes. There is one stripe for each of the first 13

               colonies which in 1776 became independent of England. The eagle

               became the official national symbol of the country in 1782. It holds

               an olive branch (a symbol of peace) and arrows ( symbols of strength) in

               its paws. Many rivers cross the country. The most important are the

               Mississippi, the Missouri, the Colorado, the Sacramento. The main lakes

               the Great Lakes in the north. The largest cities are New York, Los

               Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit, San Francisco, Washington

               And others. The USA is one of the most powerful and highly

               Developed countries in the world. It is the leader of the western world.

Teacher: We continue our meeting with the presentation of the Mississippi River.

                But first I”D like to present some new words. I think you’ll need them to

                what pupils will tell you.

Pupil 2: I’d like to say a few words about the Mississippi River. The Mississippi

              River in the USA is called “the father of waters”. The name Mississippi

              came from the Indian tribes that live along the famous river. The length

              of the river is 3950 km; from the source at the Missouri River it is 6420

              km. In the Mississippi system there are 250 branches. The Mississippi

              River with its 2 main branches, the Missouri and the Ohio Rivers together        

              touch 31 states and 2 Canadian provinces and cover one eighth of North

              America.

Pupil 3: The source of the upper Mississippi is considered to be Lake Itasca in

              northern Minnesota. Here the Mississippi River is only a stream, 10 or 12

              feet wide, and about 2 feet deep. The Mississippi River varies greatly in

              width. At its mouth in Illinois it is about 1.400 feet wide. From the earliest

              days until railroads were built in the western parts of the United States, the

              Mississippi River and its branches carried most of the country’s traffic.

              Originally the cargo was carried in flatboats and keelboats.

Teacher: There are some poems devoted to the river. They are very beautiful.

               Listen to them, please.

 Pupil 4: “River of the Mississippi”      

             (It’s a part of a poem)

             River of little rivers;

             Rivers of rises,

             Sometimes subdued

             By a roof of ice, descending finally

             On your Southward course

             To spit

              Into the Gulf

              And join the wrath

              Of larger bodies.

 

 Pupil 5: “Down the Mississippi” (John Gould Fletcher)

 

              Dull masses of dense green,

              The forests range their somber platforms

               Between them silently, like a spirit

               The river finds its own mysterious path.

 

Pupil 6: “Brown River Smile”( Jean Toomer)

 

              The Mississippi, sister of the Ganges,

               Main artery of earth in the western world

               Is waiting to become

               In the spirit of America, a sacred river.

               Whoever lifts the Mississippi

               Lifts himself and all America;

               Whoever lifts himself

               Makes that great brown river smile.

               The blood of earth and the blood of man

               Course swifter and rejoice when we spiritualize.

               Как тихо ласкает наш берег вода….

               Сижу у воды в тишине вечерком….

               Какими цветами покрыл небеса

               Художник божественным карандашом!

 

               Как тихо гагара плывет по воде,

               За рыбой ныряет глубоко до дна…

               А вдруг раздается тот крик в тишине…

               В созвучии с небом кричит мне она!

 

               Как тихо на небе мерцает Медведь…

               Как ярко там светит Луна – серебро…

                Какую природную – дивную – Сеть

                Раскрыл предо мною Создатель всего!

Teacher: Many of the cities along the Mississippi River are or were centres of

               Various types of music: jazz, blues, folk and etc. So the Mississippi River

                Is a river of songs. I think it will be interesting to learn about it.

Pupil 8: The real, true music of the river is any kind of music that you can think of,

              because so many different kinds of people have been on the river. I would

              say that probably every race and kind of person in the world has traveled

              up and down the Mississippi River at one time or other. The original

              migrations were Celtic or Scottish or Irish, so a lot of this music was

              Scottish and Irish. People very seldom saw a picture of a flatboat or a       

              keelboat without a fiddler somewhere.

Teacher: Our students found several blues devoted to the river. Listen and say

              what “blues” means

Pupil 9: “Blues” are the folk music of American beaches. In the 1960s, simple but

              expressive forms of the “blues” became one of the most important

              influences on the development of popular music. The origin of the “blues”

              is poorly documented. The “blues” developed in the southern US after the

              American Civil War. It was influenced by work songs and field hollers,

              minstrel show music of whites. As a musical style the “blues” are

              characterized by expressive pitch inflections.

              Here are the words of the song “Mississippi Mud”. It was a hit in

              1927.

 

              When the sun goes down, the tide goes out,

               The people gather’ round and they all begin to shout,

               “Hey! Hey! Uncle Dud,

                It’s a treat to beat your feet on the Mississippi Mud”

 

                What a dance do they do!

                Lordy, how I’m telling you..

                They don’t need to band…

 

                 They keep time by clapping their hand…

                 Just as happy as a cow chewing on a cud,

                 When the people beat their feet on the Mississippi mud.

Pupils: Sing an English song using a gutar.

Teacher: So I think we were impressed by these poems and songs. Thank you very

               much. Now we’re going to have the second part of our meeting which

               will be devoted to Russia and its great river – the Volga River. Look at

               the map of Russia and get aquanted with the useful information about our

               country.

 Pupil 10: The Russian Federation is the largest country in the world. Russia is

                 Situated on two continents: Europe and Asia. It occupies about one-

                 seventh of the earth’s surface. The country is washed by 12 seas and 3

                 oceans. There are different types of climate in different regions of the

                 country. The climate is arctic in the north of the country. The climate

                 is subtropical in the south of the country. In the middle of Russia the

                 climate is temperate and continental. There are over two million rivers

                 in Russia. The longest river is the Volga. The Volga flows into the

                 Caspian Sea. Russia is rich in beautiful lakes. Lake Baikal is the deepest

                 lake in the world. The population of Russia is about 140 million people.

                 The capital of the country is Moscow. Moscow is the largest political,

                 scientific, cultural and industrial centre.

Teacher:  Other students are eager to tell us about the Volga River. Let’s listen to

                 them.

 Pupil:      The Volga River is called the “mother of waters”. It is one of the longest

                 rivers in Europe. The source of the upper Volga lies near the village

                 in the Tver region. The Volga flows into the Caspian Sea. The river has

                 200 branches and covers one – third of European part of Russia. The

                 length of the river is 3500 km. In the 18th century the Volga River was

                 one of the main merchant routes in Russia.

Pupil:       There are a lot of towns along the Volga River. Listen the description of

                 a town and try to guess its name.

                 1) This town is an industrial centre; its Stalingrad Defense became one

                 of the most glorious events in the Great Patriotic War. (Volgograd)

                 2) It is a river port and a large industrial centre. The machine building

                  industry is developed here. ( Nizhny Novgorod)

                 3) It is a famous river and a seaport; the artist Kustodiev was born here;

                 The food industry is developed in this town. ( Astrakhan)

                 4) It is an industrial centre; aircraft engines are produced in this town;

                  There is hydroelectric power station near it. ( Ribinsk)

                 5) It is an ancient Russian town; it was founded in 1010; the literary

                 careers of L. Trepholev; N. Nekrasov were closely connected with this

                 town.

                 The actor Volkov and V. Tereshkova, the first woman cosmonaut, lived

                 and worked here. (Yaroslavl)

                 6) It is an ancient Russian town; it was founded in 1152; the literary

                 career of Ostrovsky was closely connected with this town, the Russian

                 actor Volkov was born here. (Kostroma)

                7) It is an ancient Russian town, it was founded in 1148, it was famous

                for its watch factory and cheese factory. (Uglich)

Teacher: The Volga River nourished many famous poets who devoted their poems

                to it. (на экране высвечиваются фотографии русских поэтов: Н.

                Listen to some poems of these outstanding poets.

Pupils:  (рассказывают стихи на русском языке)

Teacher:  The Volga was the source of inspiration for many Russian artists.

                Looking at some of their paintings we admire the beauty of the

                countryside around the river. The atmosphere of their paintings is

                 peaceful and romantic. Look at one of those paintings. Here we can see

                 boatmen dragging a boat. They are very tired. The atmosphere of the

                 painting isn’t peaceful or romantic. ( иллюстрация картины на экране

Teacher:   Guess who painted this picture? How is it called? («Бурлаки на

                 Волге»). Now I’d like you to listen to a song devoted to a Russian river.

                 It is called “Katyusha”.

Pupils:      sing a song “Katyusha”

Teacher:   Thank you, children. Now I’d like you to do the following task. Let’s

                  play a game “A national symbol” or “ A national holiday”.

                  The first group- guess the national symbol of the USA.

                  The second group- guess the national holiday of Russia.

Tasks: Fill in the space to make words that fit the definitions. The circled letters from top to bottom will spell out the name of the national symbol of the USA( or a Russian holiday)

Разработанное мероприятие относится к теме раздела 1 " Different lands-different countries". В данной разработке речь идёт о сопоставлении двух культур: американской, посвящённой реке Миссисипи и русской, посвящённой реке Волге. Учащиеся знакомятся с американским поэтическим наследием и американской музыкальной культурой, знакомятся также с произведениями русских художников, поэтов и композиторов.
