Good afternoon, everybody! Welcome to the poem lounge where you’ll be able to meet some famous poets of the past and of the present, present your English poems, as well as translations and recitals.

Each guest is a famous poet from Great Britain or the USA.

On my left there are their portraits and seats. The guests are coming one by one, and each is going to make a short introductory speech-but without mentioning his name. Please, show them to their seats.

1guest. Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen! Let me introduce myself. I am an English writer of a romantic and satirical poetry, best known for poems such as “Childe Harold’s pilgrimage’’. I am also remembered for my romantic life which included many love affairs and for my death in Greece, while fighting against the Turks for Greek independence.

Вед. Good afternoon, sir. So, do you recognize the gentleman? Right, it’s George Gordon Byron. Let’s give him a warm welcome. Please, show Lord Byron to his seat.

And the next pupil will recite a wonderful poem by George Byron.

She walks in beauty

She walks in Beauty, like the night

Of cloudless climes and starry skies

And all that’s best of dark and bright

Meet in your aspect and her eyes:

Thus mellowed to that tender light

Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

One shade the more, one ray the less,

Had half impaired the nameless grace,

Which waves in every rosen trees,

Or softly lightens o’er face:

Where thoughts serenly sweet express,

How pure, how dear their dwelling place

2 guest. Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen! I was born in a family of a small Irish trader, a catholic. At the age of 19 I graduated from Dublin university. In 1800 I published my work «Odas to Anacreon». In a year a book of poem was published. Its name was «Роеms of the late Thomas Little». In 1815 I began to write the largest work «Lalla Rook».It was an eastern novel and it has 4 large poems. I showed the fight of Irish people for its freedom. I also wrote Biron ‘s biography.

Вед. It’s great having you here today, Thomas Moore. You are welcome, Thomas Moore. Thanks for coming. Please, take your seat.We are glad to listen to your famous song!

THOSE EVENING BELLS

(by T. Moore)

Those evening bells! Those evening bells!

How many a tale their music tells,

Of youth, and home, and that sweet time,

When last I heard their soothing chime!

Those joyous hours are passed away!

And many a heart that then was gay

Within the tomb now darkly dwells

And hears no more those evening bells!

And so 'twill be when I am gone,

That tuneful peal will still ring on,

While other bards shall walk these dells,

And sing your praise, sweet evening bells!

3 guest. Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen! I am an American poet who told the stories of American “Legends” in the long poems such as “The song of Hiawatha”. I lived in the 19 century. But even today American children often learn parts of “The Song of Hiawatha”, so many people are familiar with the lines :…By the shore of Gitche Gumee, By the Shining Big-Sea Water, stood the wigwam of Nokomis, Daughter of the Moon, Nokomis…

Вед.Welcome to our poem lounge ,sir! I am sure you know who it is .Yes! It’s Henry Wadsworths Longfellow, a famous American poet. Please, usher Mr. Longfellow to his seat. The golden sunset

(by Henry Longfellow)

The golden sea its mirror spreads

Beneath the golden skies

And but a narrow strip between

On land and shadows lies

The cloud-like rocks, the rock-like clouds

Dissolved in glory float,

And midway of the radiant flood,

Hangs silently the boat.

And now Hiawatha!( до и после выступления несколько человек бьют в барабаны), появляется человек в костюме индейца.

The song of Hiawatha

(Extract) I.

In the vale of Tawasentha

In the green and silent valley

By the pleasant water-courses,

Dwelt he singer Nawa daha,

Round about the Indian village

Spread the meadows and corn-fields

And beyond .them stood the forest,

Stood the groves of shining pine-trees,

Green in the summer, white in winter,

Ever sighing ever singing.

II

And the pleasant water-courses,

You could trace them through the valley

By the rushing in the spring-time,

Be the alders in the summer

By the white fog in the autumn

By the black line in the winter

And beside them dwelt the singer

In the value of Tawasentha, In the green and silent valley.

There he sang of Hiawatha

Sang the song of Hiawatha,

Sang his wondrous birth and being,

How he prayed and how he fasted,

How he lived and toiled and suffered,

That the tribes of men might prosper,

That he might advance his people!

The Arrow and the Song

I Shot an arrow into the air –

It fell to earth , I knew not where,

For so swiftly it flew , the sight

Could not follow it in its flight.

I breathed a song into the air-

It fell to earth , I knew not where,

For who has sight so keen and strong

That it can follow the flight of a song?

Long , long afterward, in an oak

I found the arrow, still unbroke,

And the song , from beginning to end,

I found again in the heart of a friend.

3й guest. Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen! I’m a Scottish poet, who wrote, in Scots dialect, hundreds of songs and poems, mainly on

country life, love and national pride. I’m regarded as Scotland’s national poet and my birthday is celebrated in many countries of the world each year on 25 January, known as Burns Night.

Вед. We are privileged to welcome you here, in our Poet Room. It’s Robert Burns. Please, show Robert Burns to his seat.

My heart’s in the Highlands, My heart’s in not here

My heart’s in the Highlands, a-chasing a deer

А-chasing the wild deer and following the roe

My heart ‘s in the Highlands, whenever I go.

Farewell to the Highlands, farewell to the North

The birthplace of valour, the country of worth.

Wherever I wander, whereverI rove

The hills of the Highlands forever I love.

Farewell to the mountains, high covered with snow

Farewell to the straths and green valleys bellow

Farewell to the forests and wild hanging woods,

Farewell to the torrents and floods.

My heart’s in the Highlands, My heart’s in not here

My heart’s in the Highlands, a-chasing a deer

A-chasing the wild deer and following the roe

My heart ‘s in the Highlands, whenever I go.

And now last but not least! William Shakespeare! Let’s show him how much we know about him by giving him associations with the following words: 1564.

Romeo and Juliet”, ”Hamlet”, “Othello”, “King Lear”.

Those are your most famous tragedies.

comedies…

Вед.: “Richard III”, “Henry V”.

historical plays!

5й guest: You’re absolutely right. Thank you ever so much. I’m so pleased to meet you. It does come as a pleasant surprise to me though, that even now, almost 5 centuries later, many well-known expressions come from me, and my work is still famous for its sensitive view of human nature and for the richness of its language. They say I also wrote some very good poetry, especially the sonnets, and worked as an actor at the Globe Theatre in London.

A MADRIGAL1

(by W. Shakespeare)

Crabbed age and youth cannot live together,

Youth is full of pleasure, age is full of care;

Youth like summer morn; age like winter weather;

Youth like summer brave; age like winter bare;

Youth is full of sport; age's breath is short;

Youth is hot and bold; age is weak and cold;

Youth is wild and age is tame;

Age, I do abhor thee!

Youth, I do adore thee!

Oh, my Love, my Love is young!

To be, or not to be

To be, or not to be, that is the question:

Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer

The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune:

Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,

And by opposing, end them? To die --, to sleep.

No more, and, by a sleep to say we end

The heart-ache, and the thousand natural shocks

That flesh in heir to; 'tis a consummation

Devoutly to be wish'd. To die, to sleep –

To sleep, perchance to dream...

Учитель: Today we have gathered together to learn about English and American poets. And to listen to their poems and translations.
