I get up at a quarter to seven. I jump out of bed, switch my tape-recorder and do my morning exercises to the music. Then I go to the bathroom, wash myself and clean my teeth with a tooth-brush. It does not take me much time, not more than ten or fifteen minutes. Then I dress and sit down at the table to have my breakfast. I usually have a cup of tea or coffee, an egg and bread and butter.

After breakfast I go to the college. As I live far away, I go by bus or by my father’s car. It takes me more time to go by bus. If I have little time, I ask my father to pick me up and to drive me to the doors of our college building.

My lessons begin at 8 o’clock. We have six or eight lessons every day. At 11.20 we have a lunch hour.

As I cannot get home for lunch I take it at the canteen of our college. It is situated near our college.

For lunch I have meat or fish with potatoes and a cup of strong tea or coffee with a pie. At 16.20 the lessons are over and I go home. When I get home from the college, I have dinner. My dinner usually consists of three courses.

For the first course I have some soup, then some meat or fish. For dessert I have stewed fruit or ice-cream. After dinner I help my mother to wash up the dishes. Then I do my home tasks. It usually takes me about two hours.

At eight o’clock I have supper. I have some salad, a slice of sausage and bread, sour milk or cereal.

In the evening I listen to the music or radio or watch TV. If the programme is not interesting, I go for a walk with my friends. We talk about different things and usually have a good time.

At 11 o’clock I go to bed.

Cynthia: Oh, what have you got going on?

Victor: Well, I’ve got to finish a report by ten. Then I have to drive to the airport to pick up a client of mine at eleven. After that, I’ll have a meeting with him over lunch. I guess I won’t have a break until two o’clock. But then from three until five, I have to attend a senior staff meeting.

Cynthia: Wow, that’s cutting it close.

Dialogue 3

Laurie: This was very good meeting, Liz.

Elizabeth: I’m happy that we’ve finally cleared up some problems.

Elizabeth: No, that’s all, I guess.

Elizabeth: All right. See you later.

Laurie: After a while.

Learn by heart

My Working Day.

I get up at 7 o’clock
When I hear Mother’s knock.
Then I wash and make my bed,
Then I have breakfast – tea and bread.

At 8 o’clock I go to school,
My bag is heavy. It is very full.
Lessons begin at half past 8,
Sometimes I come to school too late.
(I never come to school too late).

We have 8 periods every day,
“It’s hard to learn”, the students say.
At 2 o’clock the school is over,
It’s time for us to go home.

And after dinner I go for a walk,
With the children I have a talk.
Then we play the games we like,
Very often we ride a bike.

I always do my home task
And answer well when (the) teachers ask.
Late at night I go to bed,
The day is over. It wasn’t bad.

The last two days of the week are Saturday and Sunday. They are called the weekend. People don't go to work on weekends. But students and pupils have only

one day off. It is Sunday.

Weekend is my favourite time of the week because I don't go to the college. I think Sunday is the best day of the week. On this day I wake up later than usual. And sometimes I don't get up till nine or ten o'clock. As soon as I get up I air the room, do my bed and do morning exercises. Then I have breakfast and help my Mother to clear away the dishes and wash them.

After breakfast I get ready with my homework and then I am free. I meet my friends and we discuss our plans together. Last Sunday we went to the Zoo. There were many funny animals there. It was very interesting to spend time there.

On Sundays I usually do shopping. My Mother tells me what to buy, I take a shopping bag and go shopping. As a rule I go to the shop near my house. There are many departments in this shop and I can buy different goods there. Then I go to the baker's and buy bread and rolls. I also buy milk at the dairy department.

In the evening our family gets together. We have supper, watch TV or read books. Reading is my hobby. I like to read detective stories or books of modern writers. At about eleven o'clock I go to bed.

2. Read and discuss the text with your partner

Any family is in charge of the welfare, comfort, health, success in work and good relations of every member in the family.

There are stereotypical responsibilities of the husband, the wife and the children. They say that the wife's responsibilities are, basically, to do everything. The typical role of husband is that he goes out to work and earns money for the family. Maybe, at the weekend he cleans his car and does more technical things around the house. Lots of people in Britain are really into DIY, that's do-it-yourself, and they try to make furniture, put their own bathroom appliances, put tiles on the bathroom walls themselves, etc.

In many countries now it's more accepted that a woman can have a family and a career, whereas before it was seen as something shocking, and men were outraged that their children would be left with strangers, and thought that it was the wife's duty to bring them up. I think that's all changed now. I think responsibility for all of the important aspects of life should be shared by both of the parents, especially bringing up the children. I think that the care and early education of children shouldn't only fall into the hands of the mother, but that the father should also take an active part.

I think that children should be given as much responsibility as they'd like to take on from as early as possible. I don't think that they should be too smothered by parents and have everything done for them if they can do things for themselves. It's very good for a child to learn to be able to take care of himself and his things. Of course, the more things he can do the more versatile person he can become.

As for me, I have always been conscious that the interests of my family ought to be more important than my own wishes and desires, such as buying expensive new things or hanging around with some pals. I don't mind this because I like household chores. In our family I do a lot of things, because my parents usually work. I do most of the washing up, tidy my room and make my bed. I often go shopping. Cleaning the room is probably the best one, and the worst I think is cleaning the bath, because it kills your back. My father and I try to help my mother to do the chores. Everyone in the family is responsible for cleaning and repairing things when they have free time. In order to have a loving family every person ought to do the chores. That is the way I see it.

If I were married, I'd like to create a situation where all of these tasks would be shared fairly equally between me and my husband. Of course, if I like doing some things more and my husband would like other things more, this would be OK. I don't like the situation that my husband goes out to work every day, and I would be just stuck inside the house looking after children, keeping the clothes clean and cooking. This seems very unequal.

6. Who shares responsibility in your family? Why?

Mother: I know, but there’s so much to do about the house, my dear.

Ann: You needn’t fear, Mum. You leave that to me.

Mother: Will you be able to manage the household, my dear?

Ann: Of course, ma. And think I’ll be able to cook a dinner, too.

Mother: Yes, but you do the beds and tidy up the rooms first.

Ann: Yes, ma. Must I change the linen?

Mother: Do so, please. Take the dirty things into a bundle and put them intro the closet.

Ann: Will we do any washing today?

Mother: No, not today. Now that I am ill we might have to give it to the laundry.

Ann: I’ll wash it myself tomorrow, ma.

Mother: We’ll see. Now, don’t forget to sweep the floor, Ann.

Ann: Yes, ma. Is this the rag to dust the furniture?

Mother: No, Ann, that rag is too coarse. There is a soft rag in the closet.

If you have chosen a hobby according to your character and taste you are lucky because your life becomes more interesting. The most popular hobby is doing things. It includes a wide variety of activities from gardening to traveling, from chess to volleyball. Both grown-ups and children are fond of playing different computer games. This hobby is becoming more and more popular. Making things include drawing, painting, handicrafts. Many people collect something - coins, stamps, compact discs, toys, books. Some collections have some value. Rich people often collect paintings, rare things and other art objects. Often such private collections are given to museums, libraries.

I collect discs of my favourite groups and singers. I carefully study the information printed on disc booklets. I try to find everything about my favourite singers. Also I like to watch music programmes on TV. I want to keep up with the news in the world of music.

Of course, I like to spend my spare time with my friends. We talk about all sorts of things (politics, teachers, girls). We discuss films, books, TV programmes. In fine weather we like to be in the open air. We find a nice place somewhere in the forest. We make a fire, bake potatoes and have a lot of fun. When the weather is bad, my friends come to my place. We have a good time together.

Discuss the proverbs:

A good beginning makes a good ending. - Лиха беда начало

A Jack of all trades is master of none.За все берется, да не все удается

Не who would catch fish must not mind getting wet.Без труда не вытащишь и рыбку из пруда.

Не works best who knows his trade. - Дело мастера боится.

My Spare Time.

Every day I go to school.
I get up early and my day is full.
It’s full of lessons, doing homework.
I haven’t much time for playing and walk.
But on Sunday I have some joy:
“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”.
It’s an English proverb – we need some rest.
And Sunday for it, I think, is the best!
I like to relax: to read books and watch TV,
To play games and listen to CD.
Sometimes I draw and clean the house.
I play with my pet – a little white mouse.
When it doesn’t rain and the weather is fine,
I go for a walk with a friend of mine.
We play ball and ride a bike –
These outdoor activities most of all I like!
I go swimming and boating, too.
I go fishing (I go to the forest) and a lot of photography do.
In winter I go skiing and skating,
And in the evenings I do some painting.
It’s nice to relax in every season,
It’s easy to find for it a reason!

A book is one of the greatest wonders of world. Why are so many people fond of reading? The world of books is full of wonders. Together with the characters of books you can find yourself in different and countries have a lot of adventures. The book is a faithful friend. They form our values and characters. We try to look like the characters of your favourite books: to be brave, honest, not to be silly and greedy, and to be real friends. We enjoyed the beauty and wisdom of fairy-tales and fables when we were babies and Granny read them. They taught us to be kind, clever, hardworking, to understand other people and help them. They teach us to understand the beauty of nature, take care of it, to love our homeland.

Books have been with us since childhood. Who hasn’t read «Alice in the wonderland», «Mowgli»? Who hasn’t travelled with Marry Poppins to her imaginary world? Who hasn’t imagined himself to be Robinson Crusoe on the deserted island?

I have read a lot of interesting books, but my favourite book is «The adventures of Tom Sawyer» by Mark Twain. This well-known book is popular with the children all over the world.

The main character of the book is Tom Sawyer, who lived in a small town on the Mississippi River. He was a boy with a wild imagination. He and his friends often dreamed of different adventures. Tom was naughty, kind and brave. Besides he was noble. I like this boy because he teaches us to be true friends.

If you are not fond of reading, take a book to your liking or borrow it from the library and read it. Books are worth reading. They are our good friends.

There are cinemas in Moscow. I like to watch films very much, but tickets now are very expensive. Moreover, now in our cinemas we can see only American films. Also I watch video with my friends. When I want to go to the cinema I usually see in the program what films are on. Then I phone my friends and we discuss what films to see. We prefer feature films but also enjoy cartoons and popular science films. To see a good love story musical or detective film is a very pleasant way of spending free time.

If want to go an evening show I usually book tickets in advance. But for matinee performances I always buy tickets just before the show. There are many talented actors and actresses in our country. My favorite actor is O. Yankovsky. My favorite actress is N. Gundareva. They played the leading parts in many films and I always enjoy their superb acting.

They last film I saw the screen version of the novel Gone with the Wind by M. Mitchel. This film is in colour. It’s an old film but still it enjoys great popularity. There are many famous American actors in it with Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable in the leads. I was deeply impressed by their acting and the film itself. It hasn’t lost its visual splendor by the passage of time.

B: In fact, we have so many ways of spending our spare time! But we can go to the movies for a change, can’t we?

A: You are right. Can we order a ticket in advance by phone?

B: Sure. I wonder what films are on?

Dialogue 2

Clerk: Hello. “Brest”.

Alice: Hello. I’d like to know what film is on tonight.

Clerk: “Goodbye to Everybody”, fn Italian film.

Alice: Oh, good! I’d like to reserve two stalls please.

Clerk: Sorry, madam. All stalls are sold out. Would dress-circle do?

Alice: Are the seats good?

Clerk: First row, seats 15 and 16, that’ll be right in the middle.

Alice: All right. I guess, that’ll do.

Clerk: Very good, madam . We’ll keep your booking till 6:30. Good-bye.

Alice: Thank you. Bye.

Dialogue 3

A: Well, did you like the film?

B: Yes, the plot is quite interesting. It makes you forget that you are at the cinema. The stereo sound is done well. But the actors speak American English. This spoils the effect. They should have dubbed the film.

B: Shall we be able to get seats?

A: Unfortunately, it was impossible to reserve seats, but I am sure we’ll be able to get in.

B: We’ll have to wait for stall seats.

A: I wonder, are balcony seats still available?

B: Oh, no! They are usually too far from the screen. We won’t see anything.

A: Oh! Here we are at last. Look! There are two vacant seats in the foyer. The film starts in fifteen minutes. Let’s wait there and have a Pepsi.

Lives: Gotham City

Real Name: Bruce Wayne

Job: rich businessman

Powers: last of technology, good at fighting, Robin

1. Batman is a fictional character, a comic book superhero created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger. The character first appeared in Detective Comics #27 (May 1939).

In the original version of the story Batman's secret identity is Bruce Wayne, an American millionaire (later billionaire) playboy, industrialist, and philanthropist. Having witnessed the murder of his parents as a child, he swore revenge on criminals, an oath tempered with the greater ideal of justice. Wayne trains himself both physically and intellectually and does a bat-themed costume in order to fight crime. Batman operates in the fictional American Gotham City, assisted by various supporting characters including his crime-fighting partner, Robin, his butler Alfred Pennyworth, the police commissioner Jim Gordon, and occasionally the heroine Batgirl. He fights an assortment of villains such as the Joker, the Penguin, the Riddler, Two-Face, Poison Ivy and Catwoman. Unlike most superheroes, he does not possess any superpowers; he makes use of intellect, detective skills, science and technology, wealth, physical prowess, martial arts skills, an indomitable will, fear, and intimidation in his continuous war on crime.

2. The Riddler is obsessed with riddles, puzzles, and word games. He delights in forewarning both Batman and the police of his capers by sending them complex clues. With this self-conscious use of a gimmick, the Riddler's crimes are flamboyant and ostentatious. The character is often depicted as wearing a domino mask either with a green suit and bowler hat, or a green unitard with question mark prints. A black, green, or purple question mark serves as his visual motif.

Dialogue 1:

Tim: Do you often to the concerts?

Bill: Yes, I do. Sometimes I have to choose between my friends who don’t like concerts of classical music and the possibility to listen to music.

Mary: It seems to me that my friend played trick on me. He knows that I don’t like such a kind of music.

My Dog Likes to Disco

My doggy likes to disco dance.

He boogies every night.

He dances in his doghouse

till the early morning light.

The other dogs come running

when they hear my doggy swing.

A few will play their instruments.

The others dance and sing.

They pair off with their partners

as their tails begin to wag.

They love to do the bunny hop,

the fox trot and the shag.

You'll see the doghouse rockin'

as a hundred dogs or more

all trip the light fantastic

on the doghouse disco floor.

At last, at dawn, they exit

in the early morning breeze,

and stop to sniff the fire hydrants,

bushes, lawns and trees.

I just don't understand it

for although it looks like fun.

I can't see how they fit inside

that doghouse built for one.

--Kenn Nesbitt

Music.

Can you think of a day without music?
To answer in the affirmative is difficult for us –
We hear music everywhere: at home, parks and in the class!
We really can’t live without music,
Music gives the listeners pleasure and delight,
It makes the life completely spiritual and bright.
It reflects our life, ideas and emotions,
It can easily fly over the oceans
And be a weapon in people’s fight:
It fights against darkness, but for the light,
For freedom, against tyranny.
For humanism it fights
In Shostakovich’s “Seventh Symphony”.
Classical music appeals to the heart and soul.
Nobody denies its important role:
It condemns evil and supports the ideas of good,
Classical music helps us relax and be in good mood.
As for me, I prefer quiet lyrical piano pieces by Prokofiev and Chopin
Though at the concerts of famous orchestras, it’s a pity, I’ve never been.
