Ex. Game, like, stone – открытый тип слога (I тип чтения)
I. Transcription and rules of reading.

Буква С имеет 2 произношения: [s] перед гласными: e, I, y; [k] перед гласными: a, o, u.
Ex. cent [sent], cin [sin]; cat [k æt], cut [k Λ t]
Буква G имеет 2 произношения: [ d3 ] перед гласными: e, I, y; [g] перед гласными: a, o, u.
Ex. Gym [ d3im ]; go [gou]. Исключение: get [get]
[∫] |
1. tion [∫ən ]: celebration [ ´seli´brei∫n ], tuition [ tju:´i∫n ] 2. cious [∫əs ]: delicious [ dil´∫əs ], vicious [ ´vi∫əs ] 3. cian [∫ən ]: musician [ mju:´zi∫ən ], politician [ poli´ti∫ən ] 4. и, конечно, буквосочетание sh: sheep [ ∫i:p ], shoot [ ∫u:t ] |
[ t∫] |
1. ch: chair [ t∫eə ], child [ t∫aild ] 2. t + ure: creature [ ´kri:t∫ə ], future [ ´fju:t∫ə ] |
[ ð ] |
[ ŋ ] |
[h] - данный звук образуется путем сочетания букв wh: what [wot], when [wen]
Исключение: who [hu:], whom [hu:m], whose[hu:z]
III. Vowels.
[ e ] |
буква e в закрытом слоге: get [ get ], vet
[ vet ]
|
[ i ] |
буква i в закрытом слоге: hit [ hit ], kill
[ kil ]
|
[ i: ] |
[ mi:t ], deep [di:p ];
|
[ o ] |
[ ´lotəri ], |
[ o: ] |
возникает в следующих буквосочетаниях: 1. o + r: corn [ ko:n ], fortress [ ´fo:trəs ]; more [ mo: ] 2. почти всегда в a + u: fauna [ ´fo:nə ], taunt [ to:nt ]; исключение составляют лишь несколько слов, например, aunt 3. Согласная (кроме w) + a + w : dawn [ do:n ], hawk [ ho:k ]. 4. всегда в буквосочетании a + ll: tall [ to:l ], small [ smo:l ] 5. Буквосочетание a + ld (lk) также даёт этот звук: bald [ bo:ld ], talk [ to:k ] 6. |
[ æ ] |
[ ´sΛndi ]. |
[ a: ] |
возникает в следующих буквосочетаниях: 1. a + r: dark [ da:k ], farm [ fa:m ] (см. регулярно буква a в закрытом слоге: last [ la:st ], father [ fa:ðə ] - поэтому необходимо сверяться со словарём, т.
очень редко a + r даёт звук [ o: ] warm [ wo:m
]; |
[ u ] |
1. всегда o+o: foot [ fut ], boot [ bu:t ], took [ tuk ], moon [ mu:n ] 2.
вариант: 3. ou + согласная: could [ ku:d ], wound [ wu:nd ] ( но подобные случаи не часты). 4. r + u+ согласная + гласная: prune [ pru:n ], rumour [ ru:mə ] Примечание: 2.
всегда i /e /u + r (в закрытом слоге): skirt [ skε:t ], person [ pε:sən ] turn [ tε:n ], burst [ bε:st ] - (см. примечание) 2. ae + r: pearl [ pε:l ], learn [ lε:n ] Примечание: в отдельных случаях сочетание o + r после w даёт этот звук: word [ wε:d ], work [ wε:k ] |
[ ə ] |

I. Cardinal numerals. 1) Cardinal numerals from 0 to 12. zero –
ноль 2) Cardinal numerals from 13 to 20.
- двадцать, hundred ['hndrd] - сто, сотня, 4) Reading of big numbers.
e.g. 4,631 - four thousand six hundred and thirty-one; 6,254,798- six million two hundred and fifty four thousand, seven hundred and ninety-eight.
e.g. 104 – one hundred and four; 1,136 - onе thousand one hundred and thirty six. Hundreds of books two hundred of books Thousands of books five thousand books Millions of people two million people
REMEMBER!
e.g. в 1917 году - in nineteen seventeen (слово "год" не используется); в 1845 году – in eighteen forty-five. II. Ordinal numerals. Перед ними обычно стоит определенный артикль the, который относится к определяемому существительному. e.g. four - the fourth ['f:] - четвертый; Порядковые числительные, которые образуются не по общему правилу: the first [f:st] - первый, 2) В порядковых многозначных числительных окончание -th присоединяется к последней цифре e.g. the one hundred and twenty sixth book - сто двадцать шестая книга. При этом используется определенный артикль the: e.g. the 70's - the seventies - семидесятые годы the 60's - the sixties - шестидесятые годы. III. Fractions.
IV. Mathematical activities.

«Seven wonders of the world».
Diana, Apollo's twin sister, was the goddess of the Moon. She was also the goddess of the chase and is pictured as a robust maiden in a hunting skirt with a bow and a quiver. The Temple of Diana at Ephesus was one of Seven Wonders of the World.
The pyramids of Egypt are built of huge blocks of limestone. The
largest of three pyramids, the Great Pyramid, is believed to have been built
for King Khufu (Cheops). The square base averages 230.4
m on a side. It rose to a height of 146.6
m. More than 2,500,000 blocks of granite and limestone were used in its
construction, Its construction required the labour of 100,000 men for twenty
years. It was built nearly five thousand years.
Babylon was one of the greatest cities of antiquity. The circumference
of the city was forty miles, but the entire area was not covered with
buildings. There were fields, orchards and gardens within the city limits. The
whole city was enclosed by a great brick wall pierced by nearly one hundred
gates. Outside the wall was a deep moat filled with water. Within the city
there were-many magnificent buildings, including the great palace of the King,
the Temple of the god Bel and the Hanging Gardens. The Hanging
Gardens were built by the Great King to please his Median wife, who in her
native, country was accustomed to mountain scenery. It was a square building of
receding terraces supported by arches and columns. The terraces were covered
with earth on which flowers, shrubs and trees grew.
Zeus or Jupiter (the Roman name) was represented as a man of gigantic
size with curling hair and beard. Homer tells us that the movement of his
eyebrows would shake Olympus to its base. The Greeks made many statues of this
deity; the most celebrated was the colossal figure by Phidias at Olympia.
The other three Wonders of the World were a great Mausoleum at
Halicarnassus, a great statue of Colossus at Rhodes and the Pharos
or lighthouse at Alexandria. The Mausoleum was the tomb of King Mausolus
(died in 353 BC), built by his widow. The Colossus of Rhodes was a bronze
statue of the sun-god Apollo, over 100
feet high, erected in 292-280 BC.
The Pharos was a tower of white marble built 270 BC. Of all the Seven Wonders of the world only the pyramids have endured to modern times.

MODULE 2 (UNITS 3 & 4)
Conversational topic: INTERPERSONAL RELATIONS.
Grammar topic: PERSONAL, POSSESIVE, DEMONSTRATIVE, INTERROGATIVE AND REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS.
«What is friendship»
What is friendship? Some people will say that it is a feeling of mutual liking between two or more people, other will add that it is a state when one person understands and supports the other one.
The most important feeling that exists between friends is trust. It never appears by itself, it's the result of a long friendship and this feeling is very valuable. Respect and tolerance are also very important; it means that you don't criticize your friend's way of living, but try to understand him, discuss problems with him and explain to him what you think is good and what is bad. A friend is a person who can help you in time, lend you any sum of money for a long period of time without any percent, whom you can wake up in the middle of the night just to say you feel worried or who is eager to do everything for you waiting nothing in return, who supports you in all your beginnings and who will never betray you.
Lucky are those people who have friends. I'm happy to have lots of friends, too. Some of them are very close, some are less. But all of them make my life interesting and enjoyable.
I appreciate friendship. It makes happiness grow brighter and grief less painful, because we have friends to share it with. When we doubt our ability to fulfill our aspiration or to reach our secret goal it is our best friend who gives us a spark of assurance. And we trust our friends and we are grateful to them. Friendship is a bridge between loneliness and fellowship, frustration and confidence, despair and hope, setbacks and success. That's why a true friend is a priceless gift. They are rich who have true friends, says a proverb and I agree.

Pronouns.
I. Personal pronouns.
|
I - я |
me -
we
мы |
us
e.g. Does he know what I want?
Tell him to call me right away.
I hear a knock at the door. - I think it's my
wife.
"The music stopped. He didn't notice it. Местоимение "it" часто
e.g. It's
snowing.
It's very cold in the
room. В
It's three
o'clock.
It's two miles to the
station.
It's twenty degrees above ro.
II. Demonstrative pronouns.
these - эти |
e.g. This is my father. And that is my
uncle.
I don't like these apples. -
They are too sour. -
This is not salt. It's sugar. -
What is this? - It's my bag.
These are our coats. -
Is that your watch? -
This student works at that table. -
This dress fits her perfectly. -
III. Possessive pronouns.

E.g. It's a house. Its roof is new.
IV. Reflexive pronouns.
I - myself
you - yourself
he - himself
she - herself
we - ourselves
you - yourselves they - themselves
e.g. She washed herself.

Conversational topic: APPEARANCE AND
CHARACTER OF PEOPLE.
Grammar topic: TO BE, TO HAVE.
“Some words about my family”
When we speak about somebody's figure, face, hands, feet we mean his or her appearance. A person may be tall, middle-sized or short, thin or plump. A face may be round, oval or square. In summer some people may have freckles on their faces. Old people have wrinkled faces. People's hair may be long or shot, thin or thick, good or bad, straight or curly. If it is long it is often plaited. Its colour may be black or fair, chestnut or red. Old people have grey hair. Eyes may be large or small. They may be of different colour, grey, green, black, or hazel (brown). Cheeks may be rosy or pale (if a person is ill), plump or hollow. Some people have dimples in their cheeks when they smile. Women usually have their hair done at the hairdressers. The manner of walking is called the walk (gait). One's step may be: light, heavy, firm. Old people often shuffle their feet, have a shuffling gait. I would tell you about my family.
My name is Ben. My father is 43. He is tall. He has large hands and his feet are size 45. He has short, dark curly hair and a small beard. His arms, legs and chest are hairy. He is a cheerful person and when he laughs, you can see even white teeth. He wears glasses. His eyes are grey. He usually wears jeans, shirts or sweaters.
My mother is a very different person. She`s short and plumpish. She has small hands and feet. She has long, straight, fair hair. She has rosy cheeks. She has long eyelashes. She likes fashionable clothes. Her favorite colours are red and blue.
My 20-years sister uses lots of make-up. She`s tall and slim, with slender arms and elegant legs. Her full lips are always red. She`s open-minded and nice. She is married and has a baby.
My nephew is still a toddler. He can`t speak yet, but he`s very selfish and he bores me.

MODULE 3 (UNITS 5 & 6)
Conversational topic: SPORT AND A HEALTHY MODE OF LIFE.
Grammar topic: ARTICLES. DEFINITE AND INDEFINITE. THERE IS/ARE.
«Sport and a healthy mode of life»
Sport is very important in our life. It is popular among young and old people.
Many people do morning exercises, jog in the morning, train themselves in clubs, in different sections and take part in sport competitions.
Other people like sports too, but they only watch sports games, listen to sports news. They prefer reading interesting stories about sportsmen. But they don't go in for sports.
Physical training is an important subject at school. Pupils have got physical training lessons twice a week. Boys and girls play volley-ball and basket-ball at the lessons. There is a sports ground near our school and school-children go in for sports in the open air.
A lot of different competitions are held at schools, a great number of pupils take part in them. All participants try to get good results and become winners. Sport helps people to keep in good health. If you go in for sports, you have good health and don't catch cold.
Children and grown-ups must take care of their health and do morning exercises regularly.
There are some popular kinds of sports in our country: football, volley-ball, hockey, gymnastics, skiing, skating. Athletics is one of the most popular kinds of sports. It includes such kinds of sports as running, jumping and others. Everybody may choose the sport he (or she) is interested in.
There are summer and winter sports.
My favorite sport is swimming. I go to the swimming-pool twice a week. But I prefer to rest by the lake or the river and swim there.
My friend Kostya goes in for boxing, He is a good boxer and he is a brave and courageous boy. His hobby helps him in his everyday life.
To sum everything up we`d like to say that, everybody knows about positive influence of sport on people`s bodies and minds. Sport educates a strong will, discipline, ability to overcome difficulties. It helps to increase self-confidence and keep fit. It can even be a treatment: sometimes doctors prescribe going in for sport as a cure for people with certain diseases. The proverb of ancient Greeks says `If you want to be beautiful - you should run, if you want to be healthy - you should run, if you want to be clever - you should run`, and it is still the truth. So if we take this part of the sport life, everything is brilliant and suitable for you and your health.

THERE IS\ARE
+ +
e.g.
There’s a hole in my pocket. –
(звучит натуральнее чем: A hole is in my
pocket.)
REMEMBER! Вместо there нельзя использовать it:
e.g.There
is a lot of noise in this room.
It is a lot of noise in this
room.)
Используйте there are
e.g.There
are pictures on the wall.- На стене картины.
REMEMBER! There is
используются слова some, any, no), и с неопределенными местоимениями как
somebody, nothing.
e.g.
There’s something worrying me.
Обычно there не
The door was open. –
There was the door open.)
Past Simple.
числе, то there were.
- There was a
pen here,
but I don't see it.
- There were books here.
Have you got them?
Future Simple.
В будущем времени группы Simple для подлежащих в любом числе, употребляется оборот there will be.
- There will be many people at the meeting. -
Надо поставить вспомогательный глагол (to be в нужной форме - для времени Present Simple и Past Simple ,will для времени Future Simple) перед there:
- Is there a
newspaper on the table?
- Were there many
mistakes in my test?
- Will there be
many people at the meeting?
-There isn't a
book in my bag.
-There weren't any
books on the table.
- There won't be
many people at the meeting.

MODULE 4 (UNITS 7 & 8)
Conversational topic: MY
WORKING DAY.
Grammar topic: THE PLURAL NUMBER OF THE NOUN.
«My working day»
I'd like to describe you my working day. My every day
activities are quite routine. They do not differ much from those of any other
student of our country. My working day begins at 7 o'clock in the morning when
I get up. I do my physical jerks, wash myself, brush my teeth and comb my hair.
Then I have breakfast. For breakfast I usually have toasted bread, fried
eggs, corn flakes, tea or coffee and some jam.
At ten to eight I leave for the technical school. I go to the technical
school six days a week. It takes me twenty minutes to get to my technical
school by bus. There I usually have three or four lessons. Sometimes I have a
lunch at our canteen, I eat soup or pasta with meat, maybe potato with fish,
tea or coffee. The lessons are over at ten minutes to four.
I return home at five o'clock. I have a bite and take a short rest. I go for a walk with my friends. In spring we play football, in winter we play hockey or ski. I am back at home at a quarter to seven. My parents usually return home at seven o'clock. When I am at home we have dinner at seven thirty. After dinner we go to the sitting-room. There we read books, watch TV, chat with the friends on the phone.
At
eight I begin to do my home-work. It takes me two or three hours to do it. On
Monday, Wednesday and Friday I attend preparatory courses at the University. I
leave home at four thirty and come back at eight thirty.
At ten thirty I take a shower, brush my teeth and go to bed. I fall
asleep fast and have no dreams.

Grammar topic: ADJECTIVES. ADVERBS. THE DEGREES OF COMPARISON.
«Leisure time»
Everybody sometimes has free time. Somebody prefers only to sleep in their leisure time, but most of us prefer to do a great number of interesting things. It may be reading, various types of sport games, watching TV, listening to music, going for a walk, playing cards or domino, working in the garden, going to the cinema or theatre, going to the parks or Zoo, knitting, dancing, playing different musical instruments, rollerblading, bungee jumping, collecting stamps, solving crosswords and so on. If we have a few days or a week we prefer to go to the attractive places.
Many people think that pupils and students have too much leisure time, but in my opinion, they are wrong. We are very busy. Many pupils have six or seven lessons a day and go to school five or six days a week. Even during weekend we learn our lessons. And we just have no time to go somewhere. Oldest of us are working after school or institute.
As for me, a large part of my free time is devoted to reading. I like to read books about another countries, another times and another worlds. Also I read books about history of our country. Besides reading I like to do physical exercises. Me and my school friends often gather after school and play basketball, football or other active games. But my favorite hobby is travelling. Usually I travel in summer and often it is a trip to the south, to the warm sea. I think all people must have other occupations besides their basic work, because it extends the boundaries of the familiar world and teaches us something new about people and things.

MODULE 5 (UNITS 9 & 10)
Conversational topic: MASS MEDIA.
Grammar topic: THE PRESENT SIMPLE TENSE.
«Mass media»
The mass media play an important part in our life. Newspapers, radio and especially TV inform us of what is going on in this world and give us wonderful possibilities for education and entertainment. They also influence the way we see the world and shape our views.
Of course, not all newspapers and TV programmes report the events objectively, but serious journalists and TV reporters try to be fair and provide us with reliable information.
It is true that the world today is full of dramatic events and most news seems to be bad news. But people aren't interested in ordinary events. That is why there are so many programmes and articles about natural disasters, plane crashes, wars, murders and robberies. Good news doesn't usually make headlines. Bad news does.
Some people say that journalists are given too much freedom. They often intrude on people's private lives. They follow celebrities and print sensational stories about them which are untrue or half-true. They take photos of them in their most intimate moments. The question is — should this be allowed?
The main source of news for millions of people is television. People like TV news because they can see everything with their own eyes. And that's an important advantage. Seeing, as we know, is believing. Besides, it's much more difficult for politicians to lie in front of the cameras than on the pages of newspapers.
Still, many people prefer the radio. It's good to listen to in the car, or in the open air, or when you do something about the house.
Newspapers don't react to events as quickly as TV, but they usually provide us with extra detail, comment and background information. The Internet has recently become another important source of information. Its main advantage is that news appears on the screen as soon as things happen in real life and you don't have to wait for news time on TV.

The Present
Simple Tense -

"to") после подлежащего.
REMEMBER!

Conversational topic: TRADITIONS AND CUSTOMS OF THE ENGLISH.
Grammar topic: PAST SIMPLE TENSE.
«What do we know about it?»
Every country and every nation has it's own traditions and customs. It's very important to know traditions and customs of different people. It will help you to know more about the history and life of different nations and countries.
Very often when speaking of English traditions, we think first of some curious theatrical ceremonies of the court or parliament procedure. But the word “tradition” does not mean only that. First and foremost “tradition” is the generally accepted way of living and behaving. There are many very good traditions of this kind in the everyday life of the English.
In England everything is the other way round.
- On Sunday on the Continent even the poorest person puts on his best suit, tries to look respectable, and at the same time the life of the country becomes gay and cheerful; in England even the richest peer or motor-car manufacturer dresses in some peculiar rags, does not shave, and the country becomes dull and dreary.
- On the Continent there is one topic, which should be avoided – the weather; in England, if you do not repeat the phrase “Lovely day, isn’t it?” at least two hundred times a day, you are considered a bit dull.
- On the Continent Sunday papers appear on Monday; in England – a country of exotic oddities – they appear on Sunday.
- On the Continent bus approaching a request stop the conductor rings the bell if he wants his bus to go on without stopping; in England you ring the bell if you want the bus to stop.
- On the Continent people have good food; in England people have good table manners.
- On the Continent public orators try to learn to speak fluently and smoothly; in England they take a special course in Oxonian stuttering.
- On the Continent learned person love to quote Aristotle, Horace, Montaigne and show off their knowledge; in England only uneducated people show off their knowledge, nobody quotes Latin or Greek authors in the course of a conversation, unless he has never read them.
- Continental people are sensitive and touchy; the English take everything with an exquisite sense of humour – they are only offended if you tell them that they have no sense of humour.
- People on the Continent either tell you the truth or lie; in England they hardly ever lie, but they would not – dream of telling you the truth.
- Many continentals think life is a game; the English think cricket is a game.
Many foreigners are sometimes taken aback of English custom to have a lunch. Whatever one is doing, no matter how important it is, as soon as the clock strikes one everybody breaks for lunch. The time from one to two o’clock is a “sacred” hour in England. Everybody knows that there is no use trying to get in touch with some official, business executive or firm representative at this time. They won’t be in. it is no use to waste your time going from one shop to another at one o’clock sharp they will not be opened. For punctuality is also one of the English traditions. An English proverb says: “So many countries, so many customs”

The Past Simple Tense.
e.g. Last night my neighbours celebrated their wedding
anniversary.
e.g. to use – used (правильный
to give – gave (неправильный
- вчера, the day before yesterday - позавчера, a week ago – неделю назад, last month-
в прошлом месяце and etc.

The Future Simple Tense.
The Future Simple Tense –
e.g. I will be free tonight.
He will return tomorrow. —
I’ll = I will/shall, she’ll = she will, he’ll = he will, they’ll = they will, we’ll = we will/shall, it’ll = it will. И ещё одна — won’t = will not. E.g. I won’t read the book (неправильно будет сказать I’ll not read the book).
Хотя с точки зрения классики, в школьных учебниках встречается shall вместо will для первого лица (I, we), в настоящий момент, фразы типа Shall I…, Shall we… Shall I shut up the door? (= do you want me to shut it?) Сравните с future simple: Will you shut up the door? (= I want you to shut up) — Закроешь дверь?

Tomorrow - завтра next week - на следующей неделе next year - в будущем году in a week - через неделю in a few days - через несколько дней |
some day - когда-нибудь one of these days - на днях (по отношению к будущему) но нельзя the other day - на днях (так как это говорится по отношению к прошлому) |
e.g.
I shall be free tonight. |
He will return to Moscow in a few days. |
He will sell his little cottage some day. |
We will help him. |
e.g.
I shall write to you every day. |
He will take English lessons twice a week. |
e.g.
He’ll ring you up and tell you everything. |
He will take a book, open it and begin to read it. |
REMEMBER!
Shall I see you tomorrow? Will I see you tomorrow? |
Shall we dance? Will we dance? |
Shall I translate? |

Conversational topic: WEATHER AND CLIMATE.
Grammar topic: THE GENERAL TYPES OF QUESTIONS.
«Weather and climate»
Climate has a very important influence on plants, animals and humans and is different in different parts of the world. Some scientists think that the world is becoming hotter. If you compare Moscow winter and summer temperatures at the beginning of our century and at its end you will see that climate has really changed. Winters have become warmer.
Sometimes there is little snow in January, and there were winters when it rained on the New Year’s Eve. Many people say that it is so because of the greenhouse effect. During the last 100 years people have produced a lot of carbon dioxide. This gas in the atmosphere works like glass in a greenhouse. It lets heat get in, but it doesn’t let much heat get out. So the atmosphere becomes warmer.
Where does the carbon dioxide come from? People and animals breathe in oxygen, and breathe out carbon dioxide. We produce carbon dioxide when we burn things. Trees take this gas from the air, and produce oxygen. But in the last few years, people have cut down and burn big areas of rainforest. This means there are fewer trees, and, of course, more carbon dioxide!
As we see the climate in different parts of the world changes a little from year to year. These changes can be dangerous for our planet, which needs protection.
