READING COMPREHENSION

Time: 20 minutes

Task I

Read the text below and complete gaps 1-6 with phrases A-G. There is one phrase you do not need to use.

Of all the farmers in the district William Tweltree was the poorest and most unlucky. He was a good fellow, but the strangest thing about him was 1_______________ . His life was not easy as he had to keep a wife and four daughters who were too young to help him.

William and his family were good ordinary people, but William had a dream to play in a performance. Only his four children and his wife alone knew of that dream. Then, one autumn they came across an announcement printed in the local journal that all those interested in drama were asked to attend a meeting of a new dramatic society. All the members of William’s family were anxious to see him act in a real performance and 2_______________ . When William entered the hall where the meeting was held he was surprised to see so many people. The people who wished to take part in the performance were given a play to read and choose a part. William read the play and decided that he should play the part of the Duke. In a week it was announced to William’s great regret that he would have the part of the monk. The information struck William as very unpleasant; he even hesitated 3_______________ . But when he told his wife and daughters that he would play the part of a monk they thought that it was wonderful. So, he got down to learning his role and very soon he knew it by heart. He was sure 4_______________ .

At last the day of the first performance came. William asked his wife not to come to the theatre, saying that he would be very nervous and 5_______________ . He arrived early at the theatre and when he was dressed and made up, he looked like a real monk. In the first scene he was to be on the stage alone. Although he had been preparing for it for a long time he got terribly frightened. He forgot his lines completely, his manners were very funny. In fact he looked more like a clown than a monk and was greeted with laughter. The situation was awful. Now he wished to get out of it, so he rushed from the stage and hid himself in the dressing-room. There he changed his clothes and went home. He was very much upset and didn’t know 6_______________ .

A. that might spoil everything

B. whether to take the part or give it all up

C. that he lived in dreams

D. how to break the news to his wife

E. that he would be a failure

F. they made him attend the meeting

G. that the audience would appreciate his talent

Task II

Read the text about London and answer questions below.

Where can a visitor to London

7) see beautiful English lawns and enjoy flowers?

8) open a bank’s account or withdraw money from it?

9) see a masterpiece of the famous English architect of the 17th

century?

10) buy souvenirs or visit the largest London department stores?

11) see graves of outstanding people of Great Britain?

12) go to see the place where bills are introduced and debates are held?

A

The historical centre of London is now a relatively small area still known as the City, which covers only about 1 sq mi. Most of the financial activities are crowded along Threadneedle Street, near the intersection known as the Bank, which includes the huge Bank of England complex, the Royal Exchange, and the Stock Exchange. The permanent residential population of the City is now less than 6000, but about 350,000 commute here daily to work.

B

Located just west of Soho and Covent Garden in the West End is a more residential area. The relatively dense development of this area is broken up by a series of Royal Parks, areas once owned by the Crown, including Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, and Regent’s Park.

C

The most prominent landmark of the City is Saint Paul’s Cathedral, designed by the English architect Christopher Wren to replace the original church, which was destroyed during the Great Fire of London in 1666.

D

The City of Westminster, about two miles upstream from the City of London, emerged as England’s political and religious centre of power after the 11th century. At the heart of Westminster is Westminster Abbey, begun by Edward the Confessor in the 11th century and rebuilt in the 13th century. It has always been closely associated with the monarchy and is used for such state occasions as coronations and royal funerals. It is also a giant mausoleum, and more than 3000 notable people are buried there. Statues and monuments line the magnificent nave.

E

Virtually across the street are the Houses of Parliament, officially called the New Palace of Westminster. Farther west is the monarch’s permanent residence in London, Buckingham Palace.

F

To the west and north of Trafalgar Square is the West End, which is usually regarded as the centre of town because it is London’s shopping and entertainment hub. The busiest shopping area is Oxford Street, where such large department stores as Selfridges, John Lewis, and Marks and Spencer are located. Other well-known shopping areas include Knightsbridge, the location of Harrods department store; and Piccadilly, where Fortnum and Mason specializes in fine food.

Reading Comprehension

Time: 15 minutes

Task I

Read the text below. The text has 4 sections. For each section choose the correct heading A-E. There is one heading that does not suit any of the paragraphs.

A. The creator of the Christmas card

B. The place of creation

C. Displeasure of some people

D. The ancestor of the Christmas card

E. The description of the first Christmas card.

1. Today, we send millions of Christmas cards every year. But in fact the Christmas card is a relatively modern invention. In the Middle Ages, European wood engravers produced prints with religious themes. But the first real Christmas card, as we understand the term today, was designed in London, England in 1840. It went on sale in 1843.

2. The designer was John Callcott Horsley, a well known British painter and member of the Royal Academy. He designed the card at the suggestion of his friend Sir Henry Cole, who was the first director of the Victoria & Albert Museum. Horsley produced 1,000 cards and offered them for sale at 1s (one shilling) each.

3. They were printed on stiff card and coloured by hand, with the greeting: “A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You”. The card showed three pictures: in the centre, a family party; to one side the hungry receiving food; to the other side the poor being clothed. Puritans immediately denounced the card, since it showed people drinking in the family party. But with most people the idea was a great success and the Christmas card quickly became very popular.

4. Christmas cards were not the first greetings cards. Since 1796, with the improvements in printing, merchants had been sending cards to their customers offering “best wishes” for the new year. In many countries, Christmas cards gradually became even more popular than New Year's cards.

Task II

Read the text again. For questions 5-13 decide if these statements are true (T), false (F) or the statement is not stated (NS).

5. The Christmas card dates back to the Middle Ages.

6. The first real Christmas card was designed in England in 1940.

7. The designer of the card was Sir Henry Cole.

8. John Callcott Horsley produced ten hundred cards.

9. The cards were very cheap.

10. Puritans were the first buyers of Christmas cards.

11. The first Christmas card was a great success with all British people.

12. New Year’s cards became more popular than Christmas cards in many countries.

13. Christmas cards were the first greeting cards.

Task 1

Script

For Questions 1-10 you will hear three friends talking about a film they went to see. Before you listen, read through the list of statements below. As you listen, decide whether each statement is true (T) or false (F). You will hear the information twice.

Now you have 1 minute to look at the task.

Pause 1 minute

Now listen to the talk and answer questions 1-10.

Maria

So, Anna, what did you think of the film?

Anna

Well, Maria, when David suggested going…

David

Oh I see, blame me, is it?

Anna

Oh no, I agreed to come, although, generally speaking, it’s just not my kind of film, you know, historical. However, it turned out pretty well, as far as I’m concerned.

David

That’s a relief, then. What about you, Maria?

Maria

Not bad, I guess. Actually, you know, I’d forgotten to eat before we went, so I kept wanting it to end, so I could go and get something to eat – very silly. It stopped me concentrating properly – the film seemed to go on too long.

Anna

And you, David?

David

Well, it’s true it was long, but that’s because it needed to be, I think. It’s a complicated story.

Maria

Hm, which doesn’t make it a good one, I’m afraid. But the setting of the film, and the changes between locations were all good, and kept you involved – actually, in spite of the story, if you see what I mean.

Anna

Maybe you should do what I did then…

David

Which is…?

Anna

Read the book. I read it, I suppose, a year ago and loved it. That was the other thing that made me want to go. But the book is still the more interesting version. So, do try it, Maria.

Maria

OK, maybe I will.

I don’t know about the book, though I wondered about the DVD for my sister’s birthday, which is coming up soon. But she doesn’t like the small screen, so I’m going to buy her a couple of tickets instead.

Maria

She should like that.

Anna

Yeah.

When I was born, my parents were living in a house in a small village about 20 kilometres from the capital. I was three years old when my brother was born and my parents decided that we needed a larger home. We first moved into a rented flat for fifteen months while the new block of flats we were going to move to was being completed. I don’t think my parents liked the rented flat because it was smaller than our old house.

We finally moved into the capital at the beginning of 1988. Our flat wasn’t really large, only 68 square metres, but there was enough room for two adults and two small boys. There were two bedrooms, a cosy living-room with a balcony, a small bathroom and a kitchen, where we used to have the family meals, as well.

I started school the following September, and my brother went to kindergarten. I still remember my first day at school. I even remember that there were 38 students in my class – but of course I’ve long forgotten most of their names by now.

We lived in the same flat all the time I was at school. I only moved house again when I started university in 2003. I decided to study forestry so I had to move to a town near the border. Rents were quite expensive, so I decided to move into a shared flat. Five of us rented a large flat in the city centre, and shared all the housework. I had the time of my life! I’m still living in the same town, but I’m sharing with just one person now. It’s more comfortable but I often miss the big parties we used to have at the other place.

OK, I'm going to talk today about blogs and blogging. Though I’m assuming you're all familiar with what a blog is, let's just start with a definition. Perhaps the simplest definition is that a blog is a type of website in the form of a journal of one sort or another. It consists of posts - new material, or entries - that are arranged in chronological order, with the most recent post at the top of the page.

Now, what are the typical characteristics of a blog? Well, blogs are usually written by one person, they are usually updated regularly and they are often, though by no means always, about one particular topic. That topic might be the blogger’s own life, as many blogs are personal diaries. But there are blogs on just about any topic you could think of - there are political blogs, news blogs, blogs about a particular hobby, etc., etc.

Now, most blogs are not monologues, because they allow readers to make their own comments on what appears in the blog, or to add their own information to it. In this way, people get into contact with each other, learning from each ether, sharing ideas, perhaps making friends or even doing business with each other, wherever they are in the world.

Although blogs are very much part of modern life and there are literally millions of blogs on the web, the history of blogging is a pretty short one. There is some disagreement over what the first blog was, but many people reckon it was an online diary started by a student called Justin Hall in 1994. His site was called Justin's Home Page, and he later called it Links From The Underground.

At that point, the word ‘blog’ didn’t exist. More websites like his started to spring up, in the form of regularly updated online journals on various subjects, with links to other websites and forums for people to contribute their personal opinions.

In 1997, someone called Jorn Barger first used the term 'web log' to categorise this kind of website, when he launched his own website, Robot Wisdom. In 1999, a blogger called Peter Merholz jokingly broke this word up into 'we blog’ and therefore invented the term 'blog'. Pretty soon, everyone called the sites ‘blogs' and the people writing them 'bloggers’.

Pause

OK, now let's move on to how to run a blog, and what I'm going to do now is to tell you what I think is the best approach to workflow with a blog, First of all, you need to decide on the frequency of your blog posts. Some people do several a day, which is great if you can keep it up, others one a day. Once a week might be enough, but the key question is what the readers of your blog expect. They need to know when they can expect to see a new post on the blog, so whatever schedule you decide on, it’s important to stick to it.

When you’re going to do a post, start by reading material to find out what's being discussed in friends' blogs, or in other blogs related to the topic of yours. That way you can take these things into account to ensure that your blog is bang up to date.

Then start composing your blog post. If you're doing one that involves research and links, open a file for storing the sources of your information and the links you're going to put in the post. Also consider using pictures. These can make your blog much more attractive than one that's just text. If you use photos from the web, make sure you cite the source in your blog.

When you've completed the post, add some tags. If you don't have the kind of software that enables you to build them into the post, add them at the bottom. Tags are really important for searchability - they can get you new readers who find your blog via the tags.

If you think this is a particularly good post and you’re really proud of it, announce it by sending links to it on social networking sites, together with a very brief summary of what it's about.

Then check your blog statistics to see how many people are reading and responding to your blog. Find out who's blogged about your post and reply to them, and give them a proper reply rather than just saying thanks.

After you’ve done all that, get off your own blog and comment elsewhere. Remember that you’re not the only person blogging and putting out new material - there are lots of others doing the same and you should show them some respect by giving them comments and feedback on their posts where you feel it's appropriate.

Well, that's just some advice on being a good blogger. Blogging's obviously a major thing now in the world of electronic media and it's anybody's guess how it will develop in the future.

Task 2

SCRIPT

You are going to hear a supervisor talking to the new staff at a large hospital. First you have some time to look at questions 11-15. As you listen, answer questions 11-15. You will hear the information twice. Now you have 30 seconds to look at the task.

Now listen to the talk and choose the correct answers for questions 11-15.

Good afternoon. My name’s Debbie Green and I’m going to give you a short but hopefully interesting introduction to working at this hospital. I’ll start with some guidelines about nutrition and fitness ... er, because a hospital environment can be stressful, and so we always encourage our staff to stay fit and have a healthy lifestyle. So ... just a few tips first. As you know, the key to good health is eating what we call 'a balanced diet’; many people don’t do this, however. For one thing, they don't eat enough fruit, and vegetables or home-prepared food. When you feel hungry, it's often too easy to grab something quick, because you're tired or busy. Cooking a healthy meal takes longer, and this is often why people live on sandwiches and fast food instead. Please - don't fall into this unhealthy trap.

Of course, you have to do a little exercise and keep fit as well. I know you’ll have a lot of work and may not have time to join a gym ... but consider how often you take the lift, rather than the stairs, or how often you drive rather than walk. Health wise, it may just be a question of doing things differently, rather than starting a very active sport.

In fact, being generally active is much healthier than doing lots of exercise just occasionally. As you know, this can be as risky for your heart as being inactive! As long as you do at least an hour’s exercise a day - and some of you will do more than that at work - you’ll find that you don’t lie awake at night worrying about the next day - and that’s the main advantage of exercise. Remember - this is a hospital, and you are supposed to be the healthiest people here!

Moving on to health and safety, I want to point out that it's quite OK to take a break any time that you're not busy. We know that when there's an emergency you may have to miss that cup of tea or coffee in the canteen or wherever you go, but generally you shouldn't work for more than three hours without a break, otherwise your attention levels will drop and you could then make a careless mistake.

Another important issue is hygiene. You're all trained to clean your hands at work, but remember that germs can live for a long time, so please make sure that you don't leave even a small amount of rubbish around ... there are brooms in the cupboards, so use them. We do have cleaners, but they aren't always here when you need them, I’m afraid, and a little dirt can soon build up.
