Food from around the world
We eat a lot of
different kinds of food today. Before the 16 th century, people in Europe
didn't have a lot of the things that we can eat and drink every day.
At the end of the 15 th century,
people from Europe started to travel to other parts of the world. They went to
America, Africa and Asia. They brought back a lot of new kinds of food.
Chocolate came from
Mexico. The Aztecs there drank chocolate with pepper! The Spanish brought
chocolate to Europe and they were first to put sugar in it. Until the 1870s,
chocolate was only a drink. The Swiss made the first bar of chocolate in 1876.
Tomatoes, peppers and avocados all
came from Mexico, too. The Spanish took seeds back to Spain and started to grow the plants there. Soon they spread to
other countries in Europe and then to other parts of the world. The words
tomato, chocolate and avocado all come from the old Aztec language.
Potatoes
came from South America. Potatoes like cold, wet weather. They grew in the
mountains of Peru. Coffee came from Africa. The Turks took it to Turkey and
then to Europe. Tea came from China in the 17 th century. At first it was very expensive and only rich people drank it, but in
the 19 th century the British started to grow tea in India. They produced a

Time for coffee
The
story of coffee drinking is one of the greatest and most fascinating in
history. Millions of coffee drinkers worldwide cannot imagine life without a cup
of aromatic coffee in the morning. Coffee is a natural stimulant which makes us
feel more awake, alert and ready to concentrate.
The
qualities of mocca, as coffee was once known, were first discovered in Ethiopia
more than one thousand years ago. However, it was not Africans but Turks and
Arabs who actively encouraged coffee drinking. The habit of coffee drinking
quickly spread throughout the Arab world, where coffee won a reputation as the
wine of Islam.
Coffee
was first grown in Yemen. It was popular with Turks who served the drink to
visiting Italian merchants. In 1615 traders from Venice brought coffee to
Europe, where it was originally sold as a medicine. By the end of the sixteenth
century coffee was drunk in major European cities from Paris to London. Now,
around the world there are different methods of preparing coffee, for example,
in Turkey coffee is traditionally boiled three times while Italians are the
inventors of espresso and cappuccino.
We
drink coffee because of its aroma, taste and stimulating effect. However,
extensive consumption of coffee may be harmful to our health, for instance, it
may increase one’s blood pressure or make one’s heart beat irregularly.
Fortunately, new brands of coffee have been appearing on the market recently.
As they do not contain substances harmful to health, many people will not have
to give up their coffee-drinking habits.

My household duties
I live in a family, which consists of father, mother and me.
Everybody in our family has duties at home. And, of course, I have my duties
too. I like to help my parents, and it is not difficult for me. Every Sunday I
clean my room. I begin with the cleaning of carpets. Usually I take a
vacuum-cleaner and turn it on and then clean. Then it comes the turn to sweep
the floor, to dust the furniture. I try to do this work in a proper way.
Besides, one of my duties is to water the flowers. I do it twice a week. We
have a lot of flowers in our flat and all of us like them very much.
Besides, my duties include some kind of shopping. I usually go to
the shop to buy bread, milk and some other food. It is not difficult for me because
the shop is near our house.
I think that there is nothing bad in helping parents. I understand
my parents quite well, because they are too busy at work. My parents also try
to understand me and allow me to go to night clubs with my friends and to
invite my friends to our place. We are a happy, friendly family.

PART 2
READING
Task
1. Read the text and answer the questions after it.
Is it easy to spot a liar?
According to
psychologists , the average human being lies to
others once or twice a day . This is
because deception - or 'untruthfulness' - is
a natural tendency amongst all living
things. Many animals deceive others around them
in order to get ahead in life . Birds, for example, pretend
to be injured in order to distract predators from baby
birds in their nest. Chimpanzees, when they
are foraging for food and come across
something tasty, will occasionally pretend not to have
noticed the food so as not to alert the
chimps nearby and lose their prize . So it is no
surprise that human beings often deceive for
exactly the same reasons: to save their own skins
or to get something they can't get by other methods.
Despite how
often they engage in it, most people
aren't experts at lying. People often make
inconsistent facial expressions and body movements in a
desperate attempt to seem believable and to suppress
what they are really thinking. Because the muscle structure of the face
is directly connected to the areas of the brain that process emotion, very
few people - most notably, actors and politicians - are able to
consciously control all of their facial expressions. Other signs of lying
are an increased heartbeat, a faster rate of breathing, and a higher voice
pitch.
It would be
logical to think that with these sorts
of symptoms, we would be able to
spot a liar easily. However, just as we are poor liars,
it seems that we are equally hopeless at detecting lies. In a survey carried
out at the University of Portsmouth in the UK, participants were able to
detect a lie 44 percent of the time, and able to detect the truth 67
percent of the time .
So are we better
at detecting the truth than detecting lies? High-tech lie
detectors or ‘polygraphs’ are not much more accurate. They cannot
detect lies as such; they merely detect the physical effects of emotions. These
machines measure breathing, heart rate, and skin conductivity,
which tend to increase when people are nervous , as they
usually are when lying. On the other hand, the
idea of being hooked up to a machine
like this could easily produces symptoms of fear,
anxiety and anger which are very similar to those
responses used to detect a lie, which is one reason lie
detector tests are inadmissible in court.
Now answer the questions:
1. Birds
protect their young by ...
a) injuring
themselves .
b) injuring
the predators.
c) behaving
as if they are injured.
2. Human
beings often tell lies to ...
a) protect
their skin.
b) to avoid
difficult situations,
c) to get
away from other people.
3. The
author says that actors ...
a) tell
more lies than most people .
b) are good
at lying.
c) are good
at recognizing liars.
4. According to
the text...
a) people
are better at telling lies than detecting lies.
b) people
are better at detecting lies than telling lies.
c) people
are bad at telling and detecting lies.
5. Lie detectors cannot be used in
court because they...
a) are not
totally accurate.
b) break
down very frequently.
c) can be
bad for the health.
Task
2. Read this text and fill in the blanks with the best items chosen from the
list below. Write your answers (A, B, C or D) in the answer sheet.

Part 1
For items 7-12 listen to a part of interview with a student
called Sarah Mercer, who is
planning to become a weather forecaster. Choose the correct
answer A, B or C according to the
text you hear. You will hear the text twice.
Now you have 30 seconds to look through the items.
(pause 30 seconds)
Now we begin.
Interviewer: In our series on careers, I’m talking to
college student Sarah Mercer, who wants to
become a weather forecaster. Sarah, when did you become
interested in weather?
Sarah: Well, I could actually read a weather map when I was
ten! I remember we had
really cold winters in my home town that made travelling
difficult, so I’d switch on the TV
forecast to see when we’d have good weather. My science
teacher was surprised how much I
knew during our lessons on weather at school!
Interviewer: And did your family encourage you?
Sarah: My grandfather recorded the weather every day, but I
was too young to
remember that. It probably influenced my father, though -
he became a science teacher. But my
mum bought me special notebooks to record the weather, just
like my grandfather had done,
and those helped me a lot.
Interviewer: And you started a weather club at your school.
What happened there?
Sarah: Well, my teacher asked me to help other pupils learn
about the weather, so I
started the club. The school already had a mini weather
station, so we used what we found out
from that to put in a daily weather diary – that’s now kept
in the school library. And I found the
information very useful for school projects I worked on!
Interviewer: And your family’s hobby is sailing, isn’t it?
Have you had any bad
experiences with weather on your trips?
Sarah: Well, one day we went sailing when the forecast that
morning was for good
weather. But we didn’t listen to it again later, which you
should always do, because it changed,
and we got caught in a storm. At least we were wearing our
wet-weather clothes! But now I
always watch the clouds to see if bad weather’s on the way.
Interviewer: So what kind of job will you have in the
future?
Sarah: My friends think I’m doing this to get a job as a TV
weather presenter, but I’d be
too nervous for that! But I’m attracted by the idea of
going to different countries to work. And
there are good jobs working with international sailing teams,
but I’m not sure if that’s for me.
Interviewer: So finally, Sarah – what’s your favourite
weather?
Sarah: Well, everyone likes it when it’s sunny, and I do,
too, but when it’s pouring down
outside you get great grey clouds that are really
beautiful, so I usually rush out in the wet! Fog
is interesting, too, the way it suddenly appears, but it’s
a bit dangerous, so I can’t say I really
like it.
Interviewer: Thanks, Sarah.
Now you have 20 seconds to check your answers.
