SHORT- TRACK

Short – Track is a relatively new sport. It was introduced at the Olympics in 1992. It is a kind of skating race performed on a hockey pitch. Falling and competitive fighting are its main features. It has become very popular in the USA.

Short – Track includes two main events: individual race for 500, 1000 and 1500 meters and a relay race for 3000 and 5000 meters. Both men and women usually take part in the competitions. The sportsmen run counter clock wise around the oval skating rink. Their uniforms include helmets, gloves and protective shields on the knees and shanks.

Not more than 4 sportsmen can participate in the relay race.

FIGURE SKATING

Figure skating is another winter sport popular in many countries. Sportsmen move on the ice rink, make beautiful elements and dance to music. Body coordination and synchronized movements are really appreciated by judges and public.

The International Union of Skaters was founded in 1892. Today it includes more than 60 national federations. Figure skating was included into the Olympic Program in 1924.

Irina Rodnina, Alexander Zaitsev, Ilya Averbuh, Alexei Yagudin and many other famous Russian sportsmen have won gold, silver and bronze medals at Winter Olympic Games a lot of times.



SKELETON.

Skeleton is a winter Olympic sport. Sportsmen haul down along the ice chute in a sledge fixed on the frame. Each athlete usually makes 2 attempts. Total time is summed up and the winner is a person who gets the best result. Men started to compete in Skeleton in 1928 and women - in 2002.

Skeleton is rather old. It was born in Swiss Alps in the 16th century. The first modern skeleton was constructed in St. Moritz in 1887.The first Skeleton competitions were held in Austria ( Innsbruck ) in 1890. The International Toboggan Association was founded in 1913.The first European Skeleton Cup was held in 1914.

Skeleton track is 1200 -1500 m long. A skeleton speed is over 100 km|hour. The first skeleton gold winner was John Hilton from the USA. Regular skeleton competitions are held in St. Moritz (Switzerland ).

  • Skeleton has become an Olympic sport since 2002. The first Olympic gold medal winner was an American athlete in Salt Lake City.

In Russia Skeleton began to develop only some years ago. At 2003 World Championship E. Mironova has already got a silver medal.

FREE STYLE.

Free Style is often called Ski Acrobatics. It is a kind of mountain skiing. Free Style includes 3 events: ski ballet, mogul and acrobatic ski jumping. In ski ballet sportsmen descend a gentle slope to music and demonstrate sliding elements, turnings and jumps. Men and women take part in Free Style competitions.

The first ski Sault was made by the American athlete John Carleton in 1924. Many people compare Free Style with the circus. Free Style favourites are the sportsmen from the USA, France, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, China and Australia.

Mogul and acrobatic ski jumping impress the public most of all with fascinating Saults and jumps. Mogul is performed on the uneven track with 27 degrees slope.

SNOWBOARDING .

Snowboarding is a young sport. Its name came from the combination of two English words” snow “and “board.”

It is a kind of mountain skiing. It includes descending along a special track on the board and making acrobatic jumps from jumping places.

The first Snowboarding International Competitions were held in1996. After two more years Snowboarding was included into the Olympic Program. Half Pipe, Gigantic Slalom and cross have been held since 2006. Snowboarding appeared in 1960 when the American sportsman Jay Burton demonstrated his skills in public. Skis producing managers got interested with it immediately.

There are 5 main disciplines I Snowboarding:

-Gigantic Slalom (800 – 1000m)

-Parallel Gigantic Slalom

-Slalom

-Parallel Slalom

-Half Pipe (80 m long )

Half Pipe consists of a Wall, Flat, Transition, Vertical, Platform and Entry Ramp. It looks like a big multilayer sandwich made of plastic, glass and wood.

Modern snowboard is a highly technological device produced from modern composites.
