The more you see,

The more you learn

Who wants to read and translate it?

2) And this is the epigraph of our lesson:

«The world is a book and those who don’t travel read only one page»

(St. Augustine)

Read it, please.

3) Well, today we’ll speak about travelling and about London. But first of all, answer my questions: Why do people travel?

4) Before planning travelling we must know as much information as possible. And where we can get information about travelling?

5) Look, This is the photo of famous man.

Let’s read the text about him and answer these questions:

 1. Who was this man?

 2. What is he famous for?

6) What famous travelers do you know else?

7) People who plan travelling should decide what things to take.

-What do you need for travelling?

               - Who would you like to go with you?

8) What kind of transport can people travel by?

         9) What is your favourite way of travelling?

        10) You were right in all my questions and now let’s have a closer look at London. There are many places of interests in London. What are they?

The tube. The London Underground-the  1st  ever Underground railway system in the world. It is one of a kind. It opened more than 100 years ago. It has many stations. It has 300 underground stations and it is about 300 kilometres long. The tube is used by hundreds of people who travel from the suburbs into central London every day.

The British Museum is the largest and richest museum in

the world. It was founded in 1753.It has mountains of books. It is packed with books about everything from dinosaurs to space. It has a copy of every book published in this country.

There are many museums in London. One of them is them is the Tate Gallery, which presents modern masters of England and France. There are some fine examples of modern sculpture. There is the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. It has a famous collection of arts of all countries and periods. The National Gallery in Trafalgar Square has one of the best picture collections in the world.

The Tower of London is a very old building. It has more than 900 years old. English kings lived in it many years ago, but now it is a museum. Tourists like to visit the tower. It was a fortress, a royal place and later a prison. The ravens are another famous sign. The legend says that without them the Tower will fall.

The Buckingham Palace-is the Royal residence. It was built in 1703.It is now  the official home of Queen Elizabeth. There are  nearly six hundred rooms and 3 miles of red carpet. Buckingham Palace is like a small town, with a police station, a hospital, a bar, a cinema and a swimming pool. About 7 hundred people work in the Palace.

  Westminster Abbey

It is more than nine hundred years old. There are many monuments and statues there, many English kings and queens are buried there. It is famous for the Poet’s Corner. It is one of the most famous and beautiful churches in London. This church has two tall towers. In 1952 Queen Elizabeth was crowned there.

The Houses of Parliament

They are long grey buildings with towers. The large clock in one of the towers is “Big Ben”. You can hear the sound of “Big Ben” every hour in London The clock and the bell got their names after Sir Benjamin Hall. The members of the British Parliament Work in these buildings.

A telephone box-  Sir Giles Gilbert Scott designed a telephone box in the 1920s. In 1985 more of them were replaced with modern  telephone boxes. People protested so much at the old ones were put back in London. Now you can see them.

Trafalgar Square-.Some people say it is the most beautiful place in London. In the middle of the Square stands a tall column. It is a monument to Admiral Nelson. Four bronze lions look at the square from the monument.  There are two beautiful fountains [fauntinz] in the square.

Double-decker- a bus with two passenger decks. They are a common sights in Britain. London has more than three thousands double-deckers. At many seaside resorts Double-decker with an open top desk are used in the summer season for tourists.

Great Bell

The main bell, officially known as the Great Bell, is the largest bell in the tower and part of the Great Clock of Westminster. The bell is better known by the nickname Big Ben.  People can get inside the Tower to see the works of Big Ben. The faces of the clock are very large. Big Ben sticks every quarter of an hour.

Parks of London . Londoners like their parks and proud of them. The parks are full of trees, grass, flowers and water. The largest parks of London are Hyde Park and Regent's Park. Regent's Park contains London Zoo a boating lake and an open-air theatre. Closer to central London are Green Park and St. James's Park. Hyde Park is popular for sports and sometimes open-air concerts. St. James's Park, the oldest London Park, is very beautiful with its trees and flower beds and view of Buckingham Palace. You can see the statue of Peter Pen  in Kensington  Gardens. Parks are free in LONDON.

The Queen

She was born in Windsor on 21 April 1926. Her full name is Elizabeth-Mary-Alexander Windsor. Her pet name is Lilibet. She was educated at home, taught to read and write by her parents. She knew foreign languages. Elizabeth was made her speech on the radio in 1940. She was learned to drive. She was married Prince Philip in 1947. Her first son Prince Charles was born in 1948. She came to throne in 1952. Elizabeth was crowned in Westminster Abbey on the 2nd of June in 1953.

Now she plays an important role in the country. She travels a lot. The Queen has got four children: Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward. She has five official residences in Britain; Buckingham Palace and Windsor among them.

The London Eye is a top London attraction. It is situated on the  River Thames, On a clear day you can see around 40km.

At 150 metres tall, you can look out and see over 55 of London’s main attractions including Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, Trafalgar Square, Buckingham Palace and  many others.

You can see so many London attractions at once, it’s no wonder more people visit the London Eye very often.

LONDON - THE CAPITAL OF GREAT BRITAIN

London consists of three parts: the City of London, the West End and the East End.

The City extends over an area of about 2.6 square kilometres in the heart of London. About half a million people work in the City but only less than 6000 live here. It is the financial centre of the UK with many banks, offices.  But the City is also a market for goods of almost every kind, from all parts of the world.

The West End -Here are the historical palaces as well as the famous parks. Kensington Gardens, St.James's Park. In the West End is Buckingham Palace. Palace of Westminster. The best-known streets here are Whitehall.. Downing Street, the London residence of Prime Minister and the place where the Cabinet meets. Fleet Street where most newspapers have their offices and some others. Trafalgar Square

Westminster Abbey is the place of British monarchs. The name "West End" came to be associated with wealth, luxury, and goods of high quality. It is the area of the largest department stores, cinemas and hotels. There are about 40 theatres, several concert halls, many museums including the British Museum, and the best art galleries.

The Port of London is to the east of the City. Here.

St Paul's Cathedral-  is  the greatest of English churches, was built in the 17th century. It is the place where heroes of war are buried. Everybody coming to London for the first time wants to see St. Paul's Cathedral. This is the third cathedral with this name which London has had. The two others were burnt down, the first in 1086 and the second in 1666.

From far away you can see the huge dome with a golden ball and cross on the top. The inside of the cathedral is very beautiful. After looking around, you can climb 263 steps to the Whispering Gallery, above the library, which runs round the dome. It is called this because if someone whispers close to the wall on one side, a person with an ear close to the wall on the other side can hear what is said. Then, if you climb another 118 steps, you will be able to stand outside the dome and look over London.

Thank you for your reports. And now let’s come back to the motto and to the epigraph of our lesson. Answer the question: why do people travel? Do you agree with the epigraph of the lesson?

Итог. And now I want you to answer the question of our topic. But it will be in unusual way too. (На доске две картинки- самолет и дом.) You have 2 kinds of smiles. If you want to visit London-stick the happy smile here, if you do not- stick the sad smile there. Let’s do it one by one. 1 Well, we see, that everybody wants to visit London. We have got one dream and I hope our dream will be true. Thank you for the lesson, you were good today. All of you will get excellent marks. Good by.
