The narrator:

A group of people from Kazakhstan came for a guided trip to London. They have already visited all famous sightseeings: the Trafalgar Square, the Town Bridge, the Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London, the Big Ben etc, and their next place to visit is Covent Garden. So, please, welcome our tourists and their guide.

Comes tourists, two step forward and say:

1st dialogue Камила и Нурайым

  • Which shop do you want to go?

  • Oh, I have read on the internet about one shop which sells a lot of good things.

  • What is the name of the shop?

  • I forgot the name, but I know, that there are clothes, trousers, shoes, cool caps and other things.

  • Oh, cool. Do you know is there a jeweler’s shop?

  • It seems to me, yes and what do you want to buy?

  • I want to buy two rings for my parents’ wedding anniversary.

  • This is so cute, let’s go and find it. I heard, that not far from mu shop is a good jeweler’s shop.

  • Oh, this is good. Will you help me to choose?

  • Of course, and I’m hungry, let’s go to baker’s later/

  • Ok, let’s go.


Comes the guide and say:

Guide: Hello everybody! How are you today? Are you in a good mood to visit the one and only Covent Garden?

Welcome to Covent Garden, London. I’m going to show you around and tell you what I know about this famous neighborhood. Covent Garden is a popular place for tourists to visit in London.

This area's really famous for theaters and street performers. Back in the 17th century Covent Garden was the biggest and most important flower, fruit and vegetable market in Britain. Today, as you may see the market has changed its name to “Apple Market”, pineapple logo has disappeared.

Would you like to have some time to walk around and maybe buy something? Ok. So, you’ll have about half an hour, and then I’ll meet you back here near the entrance to the market.


Everyone goes out of the room, some tourists come in and look around.

2nd dialogue Даша и Карина С.

Karina: -Welcome to the florists!

Dasha: -Hello.Can you help me?

Karina:-Yes,of course.What are you interested in?

Dasha: -Tell me about the most popular flowers here in London,please.

Karina:-Oh..well.They are cactus,rose and lavender.

Dasha: -What would you suggest?

Karina:-I think..rose.In my shop it is the most popular flower.

Dasha: -Ok.I like it.How much does it coast?

Karina:-Only 5.

Dasha: -I have only 10,but I want to buy 2 flowers.

Karina:-Ok.I will sell you 2 flowers for 10. Which flower do you want except the rose?

Dasha: -Hm..Maybe cactus.

Karina:-Ok.

Dasha: -Thank you.

Karina:-Thank you too.


3rd dialogue Даметкен и Вера

-Hello!

-Good morning!

-Would you like anything?

-I need to buy....Where is my shopping list?...One second

-Give me 2 big oranges, 2 pounds of red apples

-Anything else?

-Yes. Um...3 bananas

-How much does it come to?

-Thirty five dollars and thirty cents

-Here’s forty five dollars

-Here’s your change. Have a nice day !

-Thank you .You too

-Goodbye.

-Goodbye.

Comes all tourists and the guide (first).

Guide:

Did you like it? Have you found anything interesting there?

Let’s move on!

So I've taken you to a different part of Covent Garden because right behind me is a house where the great author Charles Dickens used to live. And do you know anything about Charles Dickens? Because he's one of our most famous writers.

Tourist (Айсу): Sorry, can we stop here for a while? We would like to visit Charles Dickens coffee house.

Tourist (Зайтуна): And it’s already a lunch time.

Guide: Alright. You can walk around this part of Covent Garden for about an hour, I’ll meet you here.

All tourists goes out of the room and comes in the coffee shop.

Валя: Hello, welcome to Charles Dicken coffee shop. We are glad to see you here.

Карина: The table for two person , please.

Валя: Ok, would you like a table next to the window?

Валя: Ok. Follow me. Here is your table. Would you like some water or juice?

Айсу: water.

Валя: OK, I'll tell the waiters. He will come in a minute.

Ерасыл: Hi ladies!

Карина: Hello.

Влад: Can we seat here?

Айсу: Yes, you can.

Ерасыл: What are your names?

Карина: My name is Karina.

Айсу:My name is Aisy, and yours?

Влад: My name is Mario.

Ерасыл:My name is Antonio.

Алина:Hello. My name is Alina and I will be your waitress today. Are you ready to order?

Ерасыл: Yes, we are.

Айсу: We would like to order… What can you recommend?

Алина: We have hot rolls with butter and honey, toasts, pancakes with maple syrup.

Ерасыл: We would like apple pies, four cups of coffee and pancakes, please.

Алина: Just a minute, please.

Влад: Are you tourists?

Карина: Yes, we are tourists from Kazakhstan.

Ерасыл: Oh, It is a great country! How long have you been here?

Айсу: Since Monday, and we will leave on Sunday. And what do you do?

Влад: We are students. What place have you already visited?

Карина: We have gone to Trafalgar Square, Big Ben, the Tower Bridge. Oh, it is an wonderful area there.

Алина: Here is your food. Anything else?

Карина: No, thanks.

Ерасыл: Yes, I agree. Have you been to Sherlock Holmes museum?

Айсу: No, we have not.

Ерасыл: Would you like to go there tomorrow? We can snow you very interesting places.

Карина: Yes, of course. We have a free day tomorrow.

Влад: Great! Waitress, the bill please.

Алина: Here is your bill.

Айсу: Thanks very much. Keep the change.

Well, let’s go!

Here we are at Seven Dials. It's a part of Covent Garden where there's a roundabout and seven streets coming off the roundabout. This place, in Victorian London, was a very different place. It was London's poorest slum. So it was one of London's worst areas. You can now see how different it is - there are many theatres and expensive shops.

Tourist (Кристина): Excuse me, can we have about an hour to shop here? I would like to buy some clothes or souvenirs.

Guide: Yes, of course! Enjoy your time shopping, and I’ll meet you here at the roundabout.

6th dialogue Аида и Кристина

Tourist: Excuse me

Shop Assistant: Can I help you?

Tourist: Yes, please. I`d like to buy a jacket and a pair of shoes.

Shop Assistant: What size clothes do you wear?

Tourist: I wear size S clothes.

Shop Assistant: What colour do you want?

Tourist: I`m looking for a blue jacket.

Shop Assistant: How about this one?

Tourist: Can I try it on?

Shop Assistant: Certainly. The dressing rooms are over there.

Tourist: Thank you.

Tourist: Where was it made?

Shop Assistant: It was made in Turkey.

Tourist: How much does it cost?

Shop Assistant: £30

Tourist: I`ll take it.

Shop Assistant: What about shoes? What size shoes do you wear?

Tourist: I wear shoes in size 37. I`m looking for a black shoes.

Shop Assistant: How about this one?

Tourist: Is it real leather?

Shop Assistant: Yes, of course.

Tourist: How much is it?

Shop Assistant: £22

Tourist: Can you show me something less expensive?

Shop Assistant: Sorry. Do you want shoes in suede?

Tourist: How much is it?

Shop Assistant: £18. And 20% off for today.

Tourist: Great! I`ll take it.

Shop Assistant: I`ll take this to the check-out for you. How would you like to pay?

Tourist: I`ll pay cash.

Shop Assistant: It`s £44 and 4 p.

Tourist: Take, please.

Shop Assistant: Here you are.

Tourist: Thank you. Goodbye.

  • Hi. I bought many nice things some souvenirs, a ring, T-shirt and watch. See it is branded watch.

  • Let me look.

  • Sure.

  • They are beautiful. Oh, what is this?

  • Where?

  • Is this a crack?

  • Oh, no, they are defective. What should I do?

  • You should go back to the shop and make a refund.

  • Ok, thanks, I will go.

8th dialogue Лена и Настя К. (at the shop, making complaint)

  • -Hello

  • -Good afternoon. Can I help you?

  • -I have bought a watch in your shop recently

  • -Yes, I remember

  • -And there is a crack

  • -But it's impossible

  • -Oh, it's really a crack. I'm sorry. I'll give your money back. Have you got a receipt?

Type of the lesson: The lesson of generalization and systematization of the knowledge;

Aims:

  • Educational: to actualize, deepen and generalize students’ received knowledge according to the lexical theme “Shopping”, and grammatical theme “Present Perfect and Past Simple”, systemize applied and fundamental knowledge.

  • Developing: to develop speaking skills, drama skills, and critical thinking;

  • Pedagogical: to teach students respect each other, be able to express their opinion, and respect others opinions; and also to develop love and respect to the English language and to the English-speaking countries.

Objectives: to revise and generalize studied material on the lexical theme, with a help of role-play, to revise and deepen studied knowledge on grammatical theme.

Expected results:

  • Students should know: lexical material on the theme “Shopping”, grammatical theme “Present Perfect and Past Simple”.

  • Students should be able to: use received knowledge on the lexical and grammatical themes.

  • Students should have skills of: dialogic and monologue speech.

Revision of the studied material.

To revise the vocabulary, I have divided you in 2 groups. One person comes in front of the group, and sit on the chair. I will show you groups words, and they will give you associations to this word, a kind of hints for you to guess. Don’t speak Russian, say words only in English.

(According to the time up to 6 students can participate)

Video activity 1.

Guys, I’m going to show you a video about the best places to visit in London for shopping. On you desks you may also find cards with the task. First of all let’s read the list of these places. Ok. Now read the description that you have. Great. So, watch the video, listen attentively and answer the following questions:

  • What place is described?

  • Whose description is this: the interviewer’s or the Londoner’s?

  • What place would you like to visit?

You’ll watch the video only once, so be very attentive.

(When students finish watching, ask them to read the definitions about places)

Role-play.

At home you had a task to prepare a role-play. You had to choose one famous entertainment and shopping district, and make about 6 dialogues. So let’s see what have you prepared. Appendix I.

We have already discussed with you online shopping. So, now I want to show you a video “Online Shopping Carts in Real Life: 7 Mishaps to Avoid”. On your desks you have questions. Read them, please. Then we’ll watch, and you’ll have to answer these questions:
