Physical training is an important subject at school. Pupils have
physical training lessons twice a week. Boys and girls play volley-ball,
basket-ball, football at the lessons. There is a sports ground near our school
and schoolchildren go in for sports in the open air.

Sport helps people to keep in good health. If you like sports, you
have good health and don't catch cold. Children and grown-ups must take care of
their health and do morning exercises regularly.

SPORTS AND GAMES
We are sure you are all interested in sport. Many of you certainly
play such games as volleyball or football, basketball or tennis. People who
play a game are players. Players form teams and play matches with other teams —
their opponents. Two players playing with each other are partners. Each team
can lose or win. In a football match players try to score as many goals as they
can.
Most matches take place in large stadiums.
Athletics is the most popular sport. People call it 'the queen
of all sports'. It comprises such kinds of sports as: running (for different
distances), jumping (long and high jumps) and others.
From time to time international championships and races
(horse-races, motor-races, and cycle-races) take place. Representatives of
various countries can win a gold, silver or bronze medal. Such great
championships in sport are organized every four years and we call them Olympic
Games. Only the best may take part in them.
There are so many kinds of sports, such as cycling, swimming,
gymnastics, boxing, skating, skiing, rowing, yachting and many more in which
you can take an active part or just be a devoted fan.
Everybody may choose the sport he (or she) is fond of or interested
in.

Teacher.
People in our country are fond of sports very much. It’s really
so, because there are no schools, institutes and universities without a gym or
a stadium nearby. There are also a lot of keep-fit centers in Russia where
amateurs go to keep their fit, chat with friends and relax after their working
day.
The government of our country pays a great attention to different
problems related with sports. It supports young sportsmen, helps sporting
societies and sport clubs in Russia to develop all kinds of sport.
Of course, sport helps us to keep fit and be healthy. Sport is
divided into professional and amateur. They are rather different. I think all
people like to play different sport games, go in for aerobics, yoga, swimming,
skating and skiing. They do it in their free time when they want to have some
rest. So it is some kind of a hobby.

Moscow Olympic Games
Teacher. June 19, 1980 was a great
day in Olympia. According to the ancient tradition, at an altar near the sacred
ruins of Hera's Temple at noon, the sun's rays gave life to the flame of
Olympiad-80.
The Olympiad-80 Flame was carried by torch-bearers who were
athletes from Greece, Bulgaria [bʌl'gɛərɪə], Romania
[ru'meɪnɪə] and the Soviet Union. The best athletes were chosen to carry
the torch. 5,000 torch-bearers were selected for the task as a result of
qualifying contests. The idea of the torch being carried by runners was that it
seemed to be the most sporting way of doing it. The Olympic Flame Relay made a
colourful prelude to Olympiad—80.
(picture 20)
Teacher. General Secretary at that time was Leonid Brezhnev. The
name of our country was Union of Soviet Socialist Republic. About the Olympic
Games Leonid Brezhnev said: “Sports bring people closer together,
help them to get to know and under-staid each other better. It would be a good
thing were the ideals of brotherhood, friendship and mutual understanding that
guide the, Olympic movement always to set the atmosphere of the meetings
between athletes from various countries".
The Olympiad-80 which was held in Moscow was
a surprising show.
