Information and Communication Technologies as Means of the Cognitive Interest Development among Teenagers

while Learning Foreign Languages

Done by ___Elena Medvedeva___

Dear students,

The problem of learning languages is very important today. Learning a foreign language is not an easy thing. It is a long and slow process that takes a lot of time and patienceAs we all know, nowadays technologies are in each sphere of our daily life. There is no doubt that they make our daily routine more comfortable. But what about learning a foreign language? Can they make learning easier? Can they motivate people to start learning? Well, there are lots of different apps that are supposed to teach people any language without fixed time limits or money. But are they really so useful?

The range of materials and tools available to help a person with his language studies is huge.

Below is a guide to the interactive types of some of the language learning materials and tools currently available.

  • Electronic and online dictionaries(Bab.la is another dictionary for a bunch (24) of languages; Google Translate );

  • Flash card programmes (Anki, Mnemosyne and Supermemo);

  • Audio books;

  • Recording device (such as Odeo);

  • Electronic translators;

  • Language exchange ( is also a great way to meet people and make new friends)

http://www.mylanguageexchange.com; http://www.meetup.com);

  • Learning with a community (Lang-8.com, iTalki.com - where you can practice your writing by posting something in the foreign language);

  • Vocabulary Training Exercises (http://www.vokabel.com, http://www.vtrain.net);

  • Learning through Skype, ICQ (for daily spoken practice);

  • Learning English with the British Council;

  • Communicating with penfriends;

  • Mobile applications (Apple – SiRi)

  • Language learning forums online (Fluent in 3 months forum);

  • Interactive language courses (LingQ, Duolingo, LinguaLeo, busuu)

We may suggest that interactive language courses can be of a great interest among teens because the beautiful interface, visual learning, and constant records of the work make the learning quick, fascinating and effective.

Among the most popular ones are LinguaLeo, Duolingo, busuu.

  1. LinguaLeo

It’s one of the most popular course for learning English. It is very colorful for both children and adults. The app is free but paid content is also included. The main hero is a lion which follows you into the jungle of knowledge. You can feed it with the meatballs you gain.

  1. Duolingo

This app is absolutely free. Each course in DuoLingo is made up of modules which are grouped to form skills. The main character is the owl that follows you in learning. Doing different tasks, you make your level higher and get “linglots” which can give you some advantages.

  1. busuu

A social network for learning languages. This app gives us an opportunity to learn 12 languages. The language course comes with interactive games and quizzes to help to reinforce your learning. The key idea of the course is to learn and collect berries otherwise the garden will die away.

Here’re the list of results we got when having compared the above-mentioned language courses.

Having compared all the points, we must conclude that the interactive language courses LinguaLeo and Duolingo suit the purposes the best of all, they can be recommended as the most effective ones that teenagers will definitely like. The only remark about the programme LinguaLeo is that it’s only for learning the English language.
