Past Perfect is used: for a past action which happened before another past action or before a stated past time. Example: She had already left when I got home. for a complete action. Example: She had arrived by 8 p.m. yesterday.
Note the difference: 1. When the telephone rang, Tom had already left. 2. When she phoned, he left.
