Hooked on the Net
The latest addition to trap thousands of people is the Internet, which
has been blamed for broken relationship, job losses, financial ruin and even
suicide. Psychologists now recognize Internet Addiction Syndrome( IAS) as a new
illness that could cause serious problems and ruin many lives. IAS is similar
to other problems like gambling, smoking, drinking: addicts have dreams about
the Internet; they need to use it first thing in the morning, they lie to their
parents and partners about how much time they spend online; they wish they
could cut down, but are unable to do so. Many users spend up to 40 hours a week
on the Internet, Some addicts are teenagers who are already hooked on computer
games and who find it very difficult to resist games on the Internet

VI Физкультминутка.
Зарядка для глаз.
VII Активизация навыков устной
речи по теме в режиме T-P1-P2-P3-P4….
Let’s
continue our conversation about the Internet in the form of discussion. Don’t
be passive, be active, argue with me, express your own points of view.
Teacher: So people can find out a lot of
useful information and communicate about themselves on the internet. But I want
to know why people want to be” on the Internet?
P1: Let me think. It seems to me that
people like to do it because they feel free on the Internet.
Teacher: Explain me, please I don’t
understand you what this freedom includes?
P1: OK. Firstly, it is equality. It does
not matter what your race, age, nationality, wealth is. You cfn post your
message on the Internet and you will be heard.
P2: I fully agree and I can add. You
will find a lot of people who will support you and others who will not support
you. You will find your allies and enemies.
Teacher: OK. In my opinion it is the freedom
to express your opinion. Do you agree? But what can you tell us about the
freedom of choice.
P3: On the Internet you can choose
information according to your own tastes or needs. I am sure that nobody can
make you look at something that you don’t need or don’t like. If you don’t like
something, you just type another address and in a second you are already where
you want to be.
Teacher: I wonder what you can choose from
these different resources? As far as I know it may be pornography or silly
games.
P4: Sure it can, but it seems to me
that very few people view pornography on the net. So these people will not
influence all the rest of the inhabitants. What can I TELL ABOUT THE GAMES?
There are tons of very useful games which will help you to understand the
economy of a city, improve your language skills and vocabulary or at least give
you better skills in using the” mouse”.
Teacher: It’s just for me, better skills in
using the “ mouse”. I see, there is also a freedom of movement.
P5: Certainly. As you know there are no
borders on the Internet, and you can travel all over the Internet without any
prohibitions. If you need some information about some foreign country you will
get it. You don’t need any visas to explore web sites in foreign countries.
Teacher: OK, I see. But I am sure we can’t
vote on the Internet
P6: Just on the contrary. I can’t agree
with you because you can vote on the Internet. There are a lot of
questionnaires where you can express your opinion towards something.
Teacher:
I see that the main
principles of democracy are kept on the Internet. So the Internet is super,
perfect and there are no problems concerning the Internet.
P7: Unfortunately, there are some
problems concerning the Internet. I think that it is not good that internet
users communicate only with other people on the Internet. They stop talking
with their relatives and friends, because they have only virtual friends. So
the Internet destroys real human communication.
P8: I want to object. May be some
interpersonal communications have been destroyed, but now technology gives us
an opportunity to communicate with our distant relatives and friends as if we
were in the same room. People can be close to each other even living on
different continents.
P9: You are not right .I consider that
if a person is mentally normal he or she will never prefer communication with
relatives to the computer.
Teacher:
So I’d like to say
that the Internet will help us to develop our educational level through its
democracy and freedom. Now sum it up. After people find out what freedom is
they…
P10: They to my mind develop this spirit
in their own country. After the Internet guides us to the one open society,
there will be no borders on Earth any more. We will live in peace and will
respect each other like on the Internet.
P11: They I am sure will be tolerant to
each other, because without this tolerance and love we won’t have a peaceful
world in the future. Warmth of hearts and ability to sacrifice is something
that requires real tolerance and love.
P12: On the internet we communicate with
people of different races and religious of course. In my opinion the Muslim as
well as the Christian first of all speak of love and mercy and has nothing in
common with terrorism. They have been existing side by side without any
conflicts for many centuries .It’s time for the human race to stop fighting and
hating each other. Generally speaking everyone should adhere to Alexander
Severov’s words:” Do not do onto others what you would not have them do on to
you”.
VIII Проверка домашнего задания.
Teacher: Your homework for today’s lesson
was to make up or find out in the newspapers and magazines interesting stories
about the influence of the Internet on the teens’ lives And what is more
important to make rules how not to have this happen to you, the warnings for
children and their parents.
Примерные рассказы:
Text 1: Georgie was 13 years old when she
fell in love with someone she “ met” on the Internet. He said that he was 15
and his name was Johnny. “ We talked about everything- pop groups, TV
programmes, boy-girl stuff. That’s how it started”, Georgie remembers. They
exchanged photographs: he sent her a photograph that showed the top part of his
head, and a little bit of his eyes. He told her it was like that because he had
a problem with his computer. They ended up talking on the phone and very soon
he asked her out on a date. Luckily, Georgie’s mother insisted on going with
her, she hid behind a big poster and watched what happened. Young Johnny turned
out to be a 47- year old man. “ When I saw him, I didn’t know what to think,
because I was shocked”, Georgie says.” I thought it was may be his dad. I was
scared as well. Then my mum came over and spoke to him. She told him to go”. It
took Gtorgie a few weeks to get over the shock. It was her first love, and no
first love should be like this.
Text 2: 14 year old Linda from California
wasn’t so lucky. Her online friend, who claimed to be 16, turned out to be a
bald 49 year old man with a criminal record. He lured her to his flat and kept
her there for a week.” It was hell”, Linda says. The man was arrested and
jailed, but Linda’s saga didn’t end there. In the following years, she learned
who her friends really were and fought her way back from severe depression and
bouts of shame and guilt.” Now, looking back, I can see that there were some
warning signs that there might be some sort of problem. But I ignored them”,
she admits. She hardly goes to chat rooms at all now:” There’s one friend I
talk to online, but mostly I just use e-mails. And I wouldn’t arrange to meet
anybody, ever. You don’t have to go on the Internet to meet people”.
WARNINGS:
·
Most chat users
are normal, friendly people, but they are still strangers. People can pretend
and they do pretend. Sometimes a grown up might pretend to be a kid. So always
remember Stranger Danger and be careful.
·
Take everything
said in chat rooms lightly. After all you never know if what is being said is
the truth or not.
·
Many people
mistakenly think that they are completely anonymous while they are surfing the
Net. They don’t realize just how easy it is to link someone’s address or online
identity with a real person in the real world. So don’t give out your surname, phone
number, home address or school, college, university and any other personal
information that can be used to track you down.
·
If you are asked
for a screen name or need to use a name to play a game, use a nickname, never
use your real name.
·
Passwords are
secret and should stay that way. Never tell anyone what it is. Try not use
names of family or pets as they are easy to guess. A mix of numbers and letters
is best.
·
Beware of people
who change their details many times. If they can’t make up their minds who they
are, how can they be trusted.
·
Meeting people
you have chatted to over the Internet is extremely risky. Even when the date is
arranged in a public place or with friends accompanying, it can still be
dangerous.
