1. Good afternoon,
students! Glad to see you! How are you? Who is absent?
Today we speak
about customs and traditions of Great Britain. It includes three countries.
What are they? Holidays
are especially rich in old traditions and are different in Scotland, Wales and
England.
2.I’d like you to
read and learn some proverbs. Look at the screen, repeat the proverbs after
me, please!
·
Every
country has its customs.
·
Every
bird thinks his own nest best.
·
Tastes
differ.
·
East
or West
·
Home
is best.
I ask you to write these proverbs
into your copybooks and learn them to the next lesson.
3.Every nation and every country has its own
customs and traditions. In Britain traditions play a more important part in the
life of the people than in other countries. Englishmen are proud of their
traditions and carefully keep them up. Holidays are especially rich in old
traditions and are different in England Scotland and Wales.
What
words are associated with a holiday? Tell us, please! And now look at the
screen.

congratulate, treat
Read these words
and write them down into your copybooks.
4. Today
representatives of three countries are present at our lesson. Englishmen,
Scottish and Welsh. Let’s greet them. I hope all of you know the favourite
holiday in England is… (Презентация)
And what is
special in Scotland in New Year? Do you know?
And now this
pretty girl tells us about a national Scottish holiday. ( Презентация)
My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is
not here,
My heart's in the Highlands a-chasing the deer,
A-chasing the wild deer and following the roe-
My heart's in the Highlands, wherever I go!
|
В
горах мое сердце... Доныне я там.
По
следу оленя лечу по скалам.
Гоню
я оленя, пугаю козу.
В
горах мое сердце, а сам я внизу.
|
Farewell to the Highlands, farewell to
the North,
The birthplace of valor, the country of worth!
Wherever I wander, wherever I go,
The hills of the Highlands forever I love.
|
Прощай,
моя родина! Север, прощай,
Отечество
славы и доблести край.
По
белому свету судьбою гоним,
Навеки
останусь я сыном твоим!
|
Farewell to the mountains high covered
with snow,
Farewell to the straths and green valleys below,
Farewell to the forests and wild-hanging woods,
Farewell to the torrents and loud-pouring floods!
|
Прощайте, вершины под кровлей
снегов,
Прощайте, долины и скаты лугов,
Прощайте, поникшие в бездну леса,
Прощайте, потоков лесных голоса
|
My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is
not here,
My heart's in the Highlands a-chasing the deer,
A-chasing the wild deer and following the roe-
My heart's in the Highlands, wherever I go!
|
В
горах мое сердце... Доныне я там.
По
следу оленя лечу по скалам.
Гоню
я оленя, пугаю козу.
В горах мое сердце, а сам я внизу

Do you
want to read this poem?
It’s fantastic! Really!
Now we are eager
to listen to Welsh!
Wales
is
a personification of traditions. Every year on the 1st of March
Welsh people celebrate the Day of St. David. There a lot of legends about him.
They say he appeared 30 years before his birth. The angel came to St. Patrick
and told him about a future great saint. Now St. David is a patron of Wales.
Usually St. David is shown with a white dove on his shoulder and it
symbolizes Saint Spirit.
The national plant
- leek is connected with the name of St. David. In 1640 in a battle between
Welsh and Saxons he ordered to fasten a leaf of leek to the hats. It helped to
distinguish enemies. Welsh people won in this battle and leek became a symbol
of Wales.
No
wonder that on St. David Day Welsh cook dishes with leek – pies with hen and
leek, traditional ragout and famous Welsh flat cakes.
This day is also accompanied with fancy-dresses balls, festive gathering in the
streets and squares.
