IV. Presentation of the new material.

Exercise 1

-Students look at the pictures and read the text in the illustrations.

-Check that they have understood by asking, e.g How many written forms of communication are shown? (Three: the girl writing to her grandmother; the girl using e-mail; the letter in the office.) What are all the other forms based on? (Speech)

-Students identify the means of communication in each picture. Check answers orally and then write them on the board.

V. Practice

Exercise 2

1) Check that students correctly match the pairs of pictures using the past simple, as in the example.

2) Check the actions of the people receiving the messages as in the example, encouraging the students to use the past continuous and the past simple.

Exercise 3

-allow students a minute to think about communications and to make notes.

-begin the discussion by asking when students last used a telephone, wrote a letter, sent an e-mail etc. Use the questions in the book to elicit opinions about changes in communications.

VI. Production

Exercise 4

1) Students read the dialogue and decide which situation it is (A). Then they look at the notes in the table.

2) Suggest that they look at the illustrations while you play the tape. Remind them that they are going to write notes in the table for two more conversations and that they must listen for the correct information.

-Allow another minute after the tape has finished for students to finish the task, then check answers, if necessary.

Tapescript:

Becky: AGM. Good morning.

Mr Hill: Oh, hello. Is that Becky?

Becky: Yes. That's Mr Hill, isn't it?

Mr Hill: That's right. Listen, Becky. I'm on the train and I'm calling because the train is late. I won't get to the office until 9.30.

Becky: Oh, I see. I'll tell the boss, then.

Mr Hill: Thanks.

Becky: So, we'll see you later on, then.

Mr Hill: In about an hour, yes. Bye for now.

Becky: Good-bye.
