I'm sure you have
heard about the girl who trod on the loaf so as not to dirty her shoes, and
what a
dreadful thing happened to her for it. The story has
been written, and printed too.
She was a poor
child, but proud and arrogant, and people said she had a bad disposition. When
but a very little child, she found pleasure in catching flies, to pull off
their wings and make creeping insects of them. Oh, poor animals!!!
As she grew older
she became even worse instead of better; but she was very pretty, and that
was probably her misfortune.(проходит мимо девушек, поправляя то прическу, то платье)
“She is so
pretty!”
“She is so
beautiful!”
“But she is bad”
“Too bad” (показывает
“What an awful
girl!” (Они
матери)
"You'll bring
misfortune down upon you," said her own mother to her. “One day
you will break my heart”
And she really
did.
Then she was sent
into the country to be in the service of rich people of distinction. They liked
her as she had been their own child.
Once her mistress
said to her: (к Инге подходит хозяйка)
"You must go
and visit your old parents, little Inger."
So she went, but
only because she wanted to show them how fine she had become.
“What A Great idea”, said she.
“I am more
beautiful and wonderful now. Let everyone see this!”
But when she
reached the village, and saw the girls gossiping around the pond, and her
mother gathering sticks for burning.
“I cannot go.
They will see me nearby this wick woman. I am too pretty to such miserable
parents”, thought she.
Another half year
went by.
"You must go
home and visit your old parents, little Inger," said her mistress.
"Here's a
large loaf of white bread to take them. They'll be happy to see you again."
So Inger put on
her best dress and her fine new shoes and lifted her skirt high and walked very
carefully, so that her shoes would stay clean.
But on her way
she had to cross the path and there was mud.
“What should I
do? Of course, I can throw and get across with dry shoes.”
But just as she
placed one foot on the bread and lifted the other up, the loaf sank in deeper
and deeper, until she disappeared entirely, nothing could be seen but her hat!
But what became of her? She went
down to the Marsh Woman.
“How pretty awful
she is! Let’s leave her here as a beautiful statue!”
Inger was punished
by standing like a statue; it was as if she were fastened to the
ground by the loaf of bread.
"Look at
them stare at me!" she said by herself.
She talked only by
herself because she was not able to move her mouth. She was not able to move
even her neck. She could move neither her legs nor her hands.
"It must be a
pleasure to look at me," thought little Inger.
"I have a
pretty face and nice clothes."
She had no idea
that she had become awful! Her dress was covered with clots of nasty slime; Her dress was
ugly, and a lot of insects were on it and a terrible frog was sitting at her
hat.
Her mother and
everyone else up there knew about her sin, how she had trodden on the loaf and
had sunk down and disappeared.
"How have
you brought sorrow on your mother, Inger," said her mother.
"Yeas, I
thought it would be so."
"I wish I
had never been born! My mother's tears cannot help me now."
She could hear
distinctly everything that was said about her on the earth above.
“It was not my
fault. My parents made mistakes. "They ought to have brought me up better”
Her heart became
harder, and full of hatred for all mankind.
"Why
should I have to suffer and be punished so severely for such a little thing?"
When she listened
she could hear them telling her story to children as a warning, and the little
ones called her
1:
"the wicked
Inger."
2”
“Shame on you!”
But one day the
little girl came to that place said:
“Oh, Poor Inger! How I wish she
would come back! Dear God, Let her come back, she will never be bad again! Let
her beg pardon! I would give my doll if she could come back!”
These words
reached right down to Inger's heart and seemed almost to make her good. The
little girl came again and again. She left all her toys here, and Inger became
better and better.
One day…Look! Inga can move her
Oh, my dear loaf,
I am so sorry! I was wrong! I will never do such things!
All is good that
ends good!
