Famous People:
Robert Scott
Robert Scott was born in 1868.
Scott
was an officer in the Royal Navy. He joined the Royal Navy at the age of thirteen.
In
1899, he heard that the Royal Geographical Society in London planned to send an
expedition to Antarctica. Scott volunteered to lead the expedition.
The expedition left for
Antarctica in July 1901, and spent two years in the frozen continent. It was a
terrible journey.
The extreme cold forced the people to turn back. But the
expedition did some very useful scientific work.
Scott returned home a popular
hero. He decided to organize a second expedition to Antarctica.
The second expedition had
less government support and many schools tried to help Scott. Children were
interested in raising money for dogs and ponies.
Scott’s second Antarctic expedition set out in 1910. On
the way to Antarctica, Scott received news that the Norwegian explorer Roald
Amundsen was also on his way to the South Pole.
Things did not go well. The ponies and dogs suffered from
severe frost. Scott and four members of his expedition pulled the sledges
themselves.
Did they reach the Pole?
Yes, they got there on 17–18 January 1912.
But were they the first to reach the Pole?
No, they found a tent, and a
Norwegian flag.
Scott’s party started to their
base, 1300 kilometres away. The weather got worse and worse. They didn’t have
enough food.
Eventually, they all died. They were only 11 miles from
the next food and fuel depot. News of the tragedy reached Britain in
February 1913.
A huge memorial service, led by the King, was held in
St Paul's Cathedral.
Robert Scott remained a very
popular national hero in Britain for many years. His courage, and the courage
of his fellow explorers, is beyond doubt.
