TRAVELLING
Modern
life is impossible without travelling. To begin with most of us in big cities
travel every day to our schools, offices and factories. For some people it is
quite a trek to get from home to work. They go by underground, they change to a
bus or they take a taxi. From time to time we have to go to another city or
country on business. Then after a year’s workpeople go on holiday and they do
not like to spend it at home.
Millions
of people all over the word spend their holidays travelling. They travel to see
other countries and continents, modern cities and the ruins of ancient towns,
they travel to enjoy picturesque or just for a change of scene. It is always
interesting to discover new things, to see different ways of life, to meet
different people, to try different food, to listen to different musical
rhythms.
Those
who wish to travel, either for pleasure or on business, have at their disposal
various means of transport. If you don’t like travelling on foot there is, for
instance, the in expensive bicycle. Then there’s the motorbike, with witch you
can travel quickly and cheaply, though for long journeys it’s rather tiring.
With a motorcar one can travel comfortably for long distances without getting
too tired.
You
can travel by sea, because comfortable modern liners cross seas in any
direction you want if you are not afraid of being seasick. You can go by air as
well, as airplanes carry passengers to various parts of the world. But if you
asked me what kind of transport I like best, I should answer that I prefer
travelling by train. Although we all agree that the future lies with air
transport, the railway is still one of the most popular means of communication
and, besides, it’s one of the cheapest.
Of
course, if I were is short of time and had to travel a long distance I should
travel by air, if I went to England, for instance, I should go by air and in
that case I should arrive in London a few hours after I left Moscow. But if I
have some extra time I always prefer to go by train.
RULES OF
TRAVELLING BY AIR
Nowadays
people mostly travel by air. Here are a few hints on air travel that may
be
helpful:
1.
Passengers are requested to arrive at the airport (air terminal) one hour
before departure time on international flights and half an hour on domestic
flights.
2.
Passengers must register their tickets, weigh in and register the luggage
(baggage). The economy class limitation is 20
kg. First-class passengers are allowed 30
kg. Excess luggage must be paid for.
3.
Passengers are permitted to take only some personal belongings with them into
the cabin. These items include handbags, brief cases or attaché cases, umbrellas,
coats and souvenirs bought at the tax-free shops at the airport.
4.
Each passengers is given a boarding pass to be shown at the departure gate and
again to the stewardess when boarding the plane.
5.
Watch the electric sign flashes in the plane. When the " Fasten Seat
Belts"
sign
goes on, do it promptly, and also obey the "No Smoking" signal.
6.
Listen to the announcements on the public address system. The captain will welcome
you on board, tell you all about the flight and the interesting places you are
flying over.
7.
Do not forget your personal belongings when leavig the plane.
DEPARTURES.
This is the usual sequence
of activities then you get to the airport.
First
you go to the check-in desk where they weigh your luggage. Usually you are
permitted 20 kilos, but if yours bags weight more, you may have to pay excess
(you pay extra). The airline representative checks your ticket and gives you a
boarding card for the plane with your seat number on it. Then you go through
passport control where an officials checks (not controls) your passport, and
into the departure lounge. Here, you can also buy things in the duty-free, e.g.
perfume, alcohol and cigarettes. About half an hour or forty minutes before
take off, you are told to go to a gate number, e.g. gate 14, where you wait
before you get on the plane. When you board (get on) the plane, you find your
seat. If you have hand luggage, you can put it under your seat on in the
overhead locker above your seat.
The plane then taxis (moves slowly) towards the runway, and when is has
permission to take off, it accelerates along the runway and takes off.
Note:
The verb to taxi is generally only used in this context.
THE FLIGHT.
You may want or need
to understand certain announcements, these come from the captain (the pilot) or
from an air steward or stewardess (cabin crew) flight attendants (people who
look after the passengers) ;
Please fasten your
seat belt and put your seat in the upright position.
We are now cruising
(flying comfortably) at an altitude (height) of 10000
meters.
May we remind
passengers (ask passengers to remember) that there is no smoking until you are
inside the terminal building (where passengers arrive and depart).
The cabin crew (air
stewards) are now coming round with landing cards. (These are cards you
sometimes have to fill in when you enter certain countries).
ARRIVAL.
When
the plane lands (arrives on the ground), you have to wait for it to stop come
to a halt. When the doors are open, you get off the plane and walk through the
terminal building and go to the baggage reclaim where you collect your luggage.
You then pass through customs (green = nothing to declare; red = goods to
declare; blue = European Union citizens). If you are lucky, you can get a bus,
taxi or train to the centre of town without waiting too long. You can also hire
a car (rent a car) at most airports.
NOTE:
In British English you normally hire something for a short period, e.g. hire a
room for a party , and rent something for a long period, e.g. a flat, for a
car, you can use both words.
How
do you call:
1)
The
place where you arrive at the airport with your luggage?
2)
The
card they give you with the seat number on it?
3)
The
money you have to pay if your luggage is very heavy?
4)
The
place where you sit and have a drink when you are waiting for your flight to be
called?
5)
The
bags you carry onto the plane with you?
6)
The
place above your head where you can put your hand luggage?
7)
The
part of the airport where the plane accelerates and takes off?
8)
The
people who look after you on the plane?
9)
The
part of the airport you walk through where you arrive or depart?
10)
The
place where you collect your luggage after you land?

PASSENGERS LANDS
PLANE AFTER PILOT FRIEND DIES.
An
81-year-old an with no flying experience had to land a single-engine
Cessna
plane after his friend died at the controls.
Robert
K. and Wesley S.,52, were returning to the Indianapolis Airport when
Mr.
S. died. "The plane started nosing to the ground",- Mr. K. said.
"I managed to pull the yoke up,I got on the radio and asked for help'.
Mike
B., a pilot of 15 years, responded. He was flying his Sherokee Piper aircraft
about 20 miles away, carrying out surveys of gas lines. Listening to a stream
of instructions, Mr. K. monitored the altimeter of the plane, keeping it at
about 2,000 ft. " He was concerned, but the never sounded frantic",-
Mr. B. said.
Emergency
crews were called to the airport. From his cockpit and flying close behind, Mr.
B. gane instructions on climbing, steering and descending. Air traffic
cotrollers also" did a wonderful job",- Mr. K. said.
On
landing, the plane bounced a few time before the tail struck the ground. It
then sterved into grassland.
Mr.
B. said Mr. K.'s ability to keep cool during the 20-minute ordeal had saved
him.

AIR TRAVEL
When
travelling by air you have to get to the airport early in order to check in about
an hour before your flight. If you have a lot of luggage, you can put it on a
trolley and push it to the check-in desk where someone will check your ticket
and weigh your luggage. If you have excess luggage, you have to pay for it, and
it can be expensive. Your heavy luggage is put on a conveyer belt and carried
away. A light bag is classified as hand luggage and you can take it with you on
the plane.
Then
you go to the customs. An immigration officer looks at your passport and a
security guard checks your hand luggage before you go into the departure lounge
to wait till your flight is announced. If you want to, you can buy some goods
at the airport duty free stores. When you see on the departure board or hear an
announcement
that you plane is now boarding, you go through the departure gate, and then
there is sometimes a security check before you actually get on the plane. When
all the passengers are on board and when the captain and his crew are ready in
the cockpit, the plane moves to the end of the runway. Finally, permission is
received
from the control tower and the plane moves faster and faster and finally takes
off.
Flying
is fun. I like being in a big aircraft. The cabin crew (stewards and
stewardesses or flight attendants)are always very friendly and helpful. They
walk up and down the aisle bringing meals and drinks; and if the flight is
going through some turbulence, they warn everybody that it might be a bit bumpy
and ask us to fasten our seat-belts. On a long flight I like listening to music
through the headphones available to all passengers or watch a video, which is
always available, too, and sometimes I have a sleep. I enjoy it all so much
that as soon as I get off the plane I want to go on the next flight again.
