  City history of Taganrog
  It is based by Peter I as the Troitsk fortress and port in the natural boundary Taganrog, forming base of Russian Azov military fleet. From the middle 18 century were in the country fixed the name Taganrog. In February 1712 on articles of the peace with Turkey, the prisoner as a result of an unsuccessful Prutsky campaign of Russian armies (1711), the fortress has been destroyed. In 1769 during Russian-Turkish war 1768-1774 northeast part of coast of sea of Azov has been occupied by Russian armies and under the Kjuchuk-Kajnardzhijsky peace treaty (1774) is definitively attached to Russia.

  City history of Taganrog
  The restored Taganrog in 1775 has been officially confirmed by a city of the Azov province. After the basis of Sevastopol (1783) Taganrog has lost value of naval base and with 1780 became large foreign trade port in the south of Russia. In 1869 has been connected by the railway to Kharkov and Rostov-on-Don. In 1890 in Taganrog have been constructed metallurgical, mechanical, boiler and other factories. In days of Civil war the power in Taganrog repeatedly changed, there was violent fighting. During the Great Patriotic War has been occupied by fascist armies.
  Taganrog is known as the native land of great Russian writer A. P.Chekhov, artist-peredvizhnika K.A.Savitsky, actress F. G.Ranevskaya; the poet-songbook M.Tanicha, actor Z.Vysokovsky.

  Architectural monuments. Sights.
  Among architecture monuments — Dvorets Alferaki (1848, under the project of architect Shtakenshnejdera). N.D.Alferaki's merchant, one of the richest people of Taganrog was the owner of a palace. In July 1863 in the house of Alferaki great actor M.S.Schepkin stopped. In the end of 1870 Alferaki were ruined, and the palace with a garden became merchant club. In the big hall concerts with participation of visitors of celebrities were often arranged. In club happened Tchaikovsky and Chekhov who has embodied him in stories "Ionych", "Mask" and «My life». In таганрожском an imperial palace Alexander I time and again stopped, whose mysterious death in Taganrog has formed a basis of various versions and hearings.

  Architectural monuments. Sights
  In the same palace Nikolay I, V.A.Zhukovsky, N.N.Raevsky, M.N.Volkonsky, A.S.Pushkin, I.K.Ayvazovsky stopped. One more sight of a city — the Stone ladder constructed in 1823. During the Crimean war at her steps the landing of the English-French armies has been beaten off. Near to the Stone ladder it is located Tchaikovsky Small house, brother P.I.Tchaikovsky.
  Around Taganrog there is a climatic resort district (gulf of Taganrog).

  In a northeast part of the Azov m. Length apprx. 140 km, width at an input of 31 km. Depth apprx. 5 m. Freezes from December till March. The rivers run into gulf of Taganrog: Don, Kalmius, Mius and Eja. Large ports: Mariupol (Ukraine), Taganrog (Russian Federation).

  It is based in 1827.
  The first troupe of the Taganrog theatre was collected by the entrepreneur Petrovsky. In the middle of 19 century on a theatre scene the Italian classical operetta reigned. Rich merchants-patrons of art and entrepreneurs-foreigners invited in theatre of known Italian prima donnas. In repertoire the best classical products of J. Verdi, J. Rossini, Z.Offenbach, V.Bellini, etc. At theatre two troupes worked: musical and drama.

  Here in different years the well-known Russian and foreign actors went on tour: M.G.Savin, P.A.Strepetova, M.S.Schepkin, V.N.Davidov, T.Salvini, E.Rossi, A.F.Oldridzh, etc. Hа A.
