Melbourne is the second largest city in Australia. Its population is approximately 3.74 million people. It is located around Port Phillip Bay in Australia's south-east. Melbourne is the state capital of Victoria. A person from Melbourne is called a Melburnian. Melbourne is a major centre of commerce, industry and cultural activity.
Melbourne was founded by free settlers in 1835, 47 years after the first European settlement of Australia, as a pastoral settlement situated around the Yarra River. It rapidly grew into a big city by the Victorian gold rush in the 1850s, Melbourne became Australia's largest and most important city by 1865, but during the early 20th century Sydney became the largest city in Australia. Melbourne was the capital city of Australia from the time of the new nation's Federation in 1901, until Federal Parliament moved to the new capital, Canberra.
The City Circle Tram in Melbourneis a free service around central Melbourne. It operates daily along a city circuit. The tram takes passengers past major attractions such as the Old Treasury Building, Parliament House and the Princess Theatre. Melbourne Zoo was the first zoo to be established in Australia, opening in Royal Park in 1862. More than 300 animal species from Australia and around the world are on the view just 4 km from the city center at the Melbourne Zoo. Visitors have the pleasure of viewing wild animals in their natural habitats. The historic Main Walk is a reminder of the Zoo’s long history.
Melbourne Aquarium is an aquarium in central Melbourne, founded in 1999. It is the world's only southern ocean aquarium and you can see animals here you will not find anywhere else.
