INTRODUCTION
London is the capital of the UK. There are very many famous sights and landmarks there that are worth seeing.

Trafalgar Square
It is the largest square in central London.
It was laid out (заложена) by the architect John Nash (1752-1835) to commemorate (почтить) the victory of Admiral Nelson over the Spanish Fleet at Cape Trafalgar in 1805. It was open to the public in 1832.
In the centre of the square there is Nelson’s Column. It is 50 m high. On its top you can see a 5 m statue of Nelson (1758-1805).
Around the column there four lions (6 m long and 4 m high) which symbolize courage (мужество) and bravery(отвага).

Buckingham Palace
This is the Queen’s official home.
The Palace was built in 1703 and received its name from the Duke of Buckingham. In 1762 king George III bought it as a present for his wife.
It has 600 rooms including 52 Royal and guest bedrooms, 92 offices and 78 bathrooms.
It was open to the public only in 1994. Tourists can visit it in August and September then the Queen goes on holiday.
In front of the Palace there is a Queen Victoria Memorial (Queen Victoria (1819-1901)was the first British Monarch to live and work there).

The Queen of Great Britain
Now the Queen of Great Britain is Elizabeth II. Her husband is Duke of Edinburgh.
They have got 4 grown-up children: Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward.

Westminster Abbey
This is a holy place. It stands on the place where the first church was built. It is 31 m high
It is the official church of the British Monarch (coronations, weddings and burials take place here). The last king to be buried in the Abbey was George II (.
All English kings have been crowned there since 1066. The first Monarch was William the Conqueror.
Many British people are honoured with monuments there (Newton, Dickens, Darwin, Burns, Kipling).

The Houses of Parliament
The houses of Parliament are often called the Palace of Westminster. It is 1,000 years old. The building is 280 metres long. There are more than 1100 rooms in it.
Westminster Palace is the seat of the British parliament-place where laws are passed and all important political questions discussed.
The British Parliament has two chambers-the House of Lords and the House of Commons. They have met at Westminster Palace since 1550.

Big Ben
Big Ben is the symbol of London. It is the name of the bell, not the clock or the tower.
The bell is about 14 tons. It rang out for the first time in 1859.
The clock is on the tower of the Houses of Parliament.
The clock face is 7 m wide. The long hand is 4 m long; the short hand is 3 m long.
The clock and the bell got their names after Sir Benjamin Hall. He was a tall man whose nickname was Big Ben.

The Tower
The Tower of London is the most famous museum in the world and the main tourist attraction in London.
It was a fortress, a palace, an arsenal, a mint (монетный двор), a prison, an observatory, a zoo.
William the Conqueror started to built it in 1076. The oldest part is the White Tower.
The internal court (внутренний двор) is surrounded by high walls with 18 towers and 2 gates (ворота).
It is the home of the Crown Jewels (Сокровища короны).

Imperial State Crown
It is the Tower’s greatest treasure and one of the Crown Jewels.
There are 2,783 diamonds (бриллиант), 17 sapphires (сапфир), 277 pearls (жемчужина), 11 emeralds (изумруд) and 5 rubies (рубин) on it. It was made in 1938.
The Monarch wears it once a year when he opens Parliament and reads a speech at the House of Lords.

Beefeaters
The quards of the Tower are called the Yeoman Warders or Beefeaters.
Their striking Tudor uniform has changed little since 1485.
Every evening the warders participate in the Ceremony of the Keys.
Every night at seven minutes before ten o’clock the Chief Yeoman Warder in his red coat and a Tudor bonnet (шляпа) goes to Traitors Gates and locks the doors and gates of the Tower with the Queen’s keys.
Beefeaters live in the Tower with their families. Nowadays there are 42 of them on guard.

Ravens
Ravens, huge black birds, are an official part of the Tower community.
The legend says that if the ravens were to leave the Tower, the Crown will fall, and Britain with it.
Under the special care of the Raven Masters, the ravens are fed and taken care of. Now there are 8 birds in the Tower.

Tower Bridge
Tower bridge is a real masterpiece (шедевр) of Victorian engineering. The construction of the bridge started in 1886 and took 8 years to complete. It was open to the public in 1894.

It is still lifted to let ships pass under it.
It is 110 tons.

St. Paul’s Cathedral
St Paul’s Cathedral is a symbol of London. It is the main church of London. The English architect Sir Christopher Wren built it in the 17th century after the Great Fire. It took him 35 years.
It is a living place of worship. The services take place daily, so tourists are allowed to enter the Cathedral when the sermon (проповедь) is over.
Prince Charles and Princess Diana married here in 1981.

There are big red buses called double-deckers in London.
People sit upstairs and downstairs on these buses.
Tourists like them very much.
