The meaning of the name. Before deciding on the name “ Evanescence”, the band went through several names, including “Childish Intention” and “ Stricken”. But what does the word mean? Evanescence may be referred to as: The act or state of vanishing away; disappearance; the evanescence of vapor, of a dream, of earthly plants or hopes The event of fading and gradually vanishing from sight; the evanescence of the morning mist.
Co-founders Lee and guitarist/songwriter Ben Moody met while in their early teens at a youth camp. Moody heard Amy playing Meal Loaf's " I'd Do Anything for love" at the piano, went over to meet her and was blown away by her singing. Within weeks they were writing songs together. Not being able to pay musicians, they couldn't perform live. However, Evanescence's first songs "Understandig" and "Cive Unto Me" made their way to the local radio stations.
"Origin" "Origin" was their first release, with the lineup consisting of Amy Lee, Ben Moody and David Hodges. However, it never got more than 2500 prints. Evanescence instead decided to use the album as a demo disc that they sent to bigger record labels. Eventually, "Wind up REcords" snapped them up.
"Fallen" The band went to Los Angeles to record “Fallen”. “Bring me to life” was one of the songs they recorded. It features guest vocals by label mate Paul McCoy. “Bring me to life” is about discovering something or someone that awakens a feeling inside them that they’ve never had before”, says Moody . “It’s the song that is the most ‘us’. That best sums up what we strive to sound like”. The album also contained such songs as “Going Under”, “My Immortal”, “Tourniquet”, “Hello”, “Haunted” etc. "Fallen“ was released worldwide in March 2003. since its release, it has been nominated for numerous awards, such as Album of the Year and Rock Album of the Year, and it continues to sell hundreds of thousands of copies each month.
"Going Under". Here is how Amy Lee explains the meaning of the song: “Mmmm… I like them all, but Hello is a very special song for me, because…well, when I was a child, my sister died and that song is about how a boy or girl assimilates death at an early age, something I had to go through”.
John, Rocky and Will joined the band after Fallen was released. Since then, Ben Moody has left Evanescence. It happened during their European Tour. The relationship between Ben and Amy had not been good for some time, and both of them decided that it would be best for the band if Ben left. His replacement is Terry Balsamo, formerly of the band “Cold”.
