The first official national flag, also known as the Stars and Stripes, or Old Glory, was approved by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777. The stars were placed in a circle so that no one colony would be viewed above another. It is reported that George Washington said, "Let the 13 stars in a circle stand as a new constellation in the heavens."

    The Seal
The latin motto E Pluribus Unum translates to "Out of Many, One" in reference to the many states making one nation. The olive branch in the eagle's right claw symbolises peace; there are 13 leaves and 13 olive berries on the branch, symbolizing the 13 original British colonies. Likewise, in the eagle's left claw are 13 arrows symbolizing the power for war. The 13 stars above the eagle and the 13 red and white stripes on the shield also symbolise the original 13 British colonies.

    Anthem
    The Star Spangled Banner
O, say! can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight
O're the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air
Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there
O say, does that star spangled banner yet wave
O're the land of the free and the home of the brave?
    By Francis Scott Key - September,20, 1814
Congress proclaimed it the U.S. National Anthem in 1931.

    24 слайд

Who wrote the music to the anthem?
Francis Scott Key penned the words to our national anthem while watching the British naval attack on Baltimore's Fort McHenry in the War of 1812. Key turned them into a poem, "The Defense of Fort McHenry." which he published in 1814.

It was Key's brother-in-law, Judge Joseph H. Nicholson, who married the poem's words to the the tune of a popular English drinking song ("To Anacreon in Heaven") to produce "The Star Spangled Banner." The English drinking song was written in 1780 by John Stafford Smith.

Fittingly, it was the US Navy that was the first arm of the United States to adopt the song as its own, in 1869. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson began to use it for official government business, and in 1931 President Herbert Hoover signed into law the resolution by which "The Star Spangled Banner" became the national anthem of the United States.
