A bit of history
In the late 19th century and early 20th century, millions of people emigrated from Europe to America. At this time, the only way to get across the Atlantic was by ship. One ship company, White Star Line, decided to build the biggest and the most luxurious ship in the world. The Titanic was 300 metres long and had 9 decks. In fact it was a kind of floating palace! There was a swimming-pool, a Turkish bath, a luxurious dining room, tennis courts and a gym!

The Titanic set sail from Southampton to New York on the 10th of April, 1912. It had more than 2,200 passengers and crew members on board. Everyone thought it was 'unsinkable'.

Disaster.
On the 14th of April, four days into its voyage, the Titanic received five ice warnings but it didn't slow down. At just before midnight a lookout suddenly saw a huge iceberg. He sounded the alarm but it was too late to turn around. The Titanic hit the iceberg. There was a big hole in its hull and icy water began filling the lower parts of the ship.

The crew sent out SOS signals, but no ships were near enough to get there quickly.
7 слайд
Women and children first.
The captain of the ship, Edward John Smith, quickly realized that the 'unsinkable' Titanic was going to sink. He gave orders to launch the lifeboats. There were more than 2,200 people on board but only 20 lifeboats. Captain Smith gave the order that women and children should go first. It meant that they would be saved, but they had to leave behind their husbands, fathers and brothers. 'Be British, boys, be British!' shouted the captain. It took the Titanic two hours and forty minutes to sink. The captain made no attempt to save himself.

The band.
One of the most famous stories of the Titanic is that of the ship's band. The eight musicians of the band gathered at the grand staircase and played jazz trying to keep passengers calm. Later they moved on to deck and continued the upper playing, even when it became clear that the ship was really sinking.

The Carpathia.
When news of the Titanic's disaster was known the first to try and help was Captain Arthur Rostron, the captain of the Carpathia. He was 58 miles away from the sinking ship, and he knew that it would take him almost 4 hours to travel this distance. He sent a message saying he was sailing fast and hard. Even though he would have to pass through the same dangerous, icy waters Captain Rostron did not hesitate. When the Carpathia got to the place, the Titanic had already sunk. The Carpathia picked up the survivors from the lifeboats. It arrived in New York on the 18th of April, where people were waiting for news of survivors.
10 слайд
The survivors.
Of all the people who were on board the ship only 705 survived. Most of them were women and children. Also many more first-class passengers survived than third-class passengers. After the tragedy, it became law that every ship should have enough lifeboats for all its passengers.

7-year-old Eva Hart was sleeping when the Titanic hit the iceberg. Her father woke her up and carried her outside in a blanket and told her: 'Hold Mummy's hand and a good girl.' It was the last thing her father ever said to her, and the last time she ever saw him.
18 слайд
Michel and Edmond Navratil were travelling with their father. When the disaster happened, Mr Navratil kissed the kids goodbye, put them in a lifeboat and returned to the sinking ship. The boys were known as the 'Titanic orphans', until their mother in France saw their pictures in the newspaper and came to get them.

Some passengers, however, saved their skins while others died. Sir Cosmo and Lady Duff Gordon survived in a lifeboat that had only 12 people! When the Titanic sank, there were lots of people swimming in the cold water. Someone said that they should go back and help them, but Lady Duff Gordon said that they might be swamped by people trying to get on board. It is said that Sir Cosmo bribed the crew not to return. So the twelve survivors set off while hundreds more were left dying in the water. Sir Cosmo was put on trial, but was found not guilty. Lady Duff Gordon became a famous dress designer.

Edith Russell was one of the last to leave the ship on a lifeboat. After the Titanic disaster she managed to survive 2 car accidents, a tornado and even another shipwreck!
