In our research work we want to know the influence of fast food on our organism. Everyone knows that fast food is very harmful to people's health. In spite of it, MacDonald's is very popular among  children, teenagers and youth. We have decided to make an experiment and as an example to make out a world famous restaurant which is called MacDonald’s. It is also fast food.

The problem of our work:  modern society heavily relies on fast food but fast food is a time bomb. Everybody must know it!

The aim of the work is to found out the influence of fast food on people’s health.

The object of our research is the influence of fast food and its harmful consequence to people's health.

Hypothesis: if MacDonald’s is very popular among people, consequently, it won't cause damage to people’s health.

      searching, collecting and sorting the information ;

      analyzing and generalizing obtained information;

      finding reasons and making conclusions;

to collect material on the topic.

to find the information on the topic.

to interview the students and find out their attitude to fast food.

      to analyze the collected information.

      to make experiments.

to present the results of the research.

The theoretical and practical significance of our work: it’s really useful and necessary to know more about the importance of right nourishment and using it in our real life.

I chose this subject because a lot of my friends quite often buy potato chips, French fries, fish burgers, hamburgers, hotdogs and other products in stalls fast to satisfy hunger. But from parents and teachers we constantly hear that it is harmful. A healthy diet can reduce the risk of major chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, and some cancers. I want to answer the questions:

1. What is really fast food?

2. Why do people like fast food?

3. Is it bad for our health?

4. What is Food with Healthy Calories?

5. Why is MacDonald's  so popular among  children, teenagers and youth?

 6. What must we do if we want to be healthy?

What does the term “Fast Food” mean ?

Modern life runs so quickly that people often don’t have enough time to eat. And most certainly they get little time for cooking. Lots of people think that fast food is the best solution in this situation. That’s why fast-food chains have become so popular.

Fast food-hot food such as hamburgers that is quick to cook or is already cooked and is therefore served very quickly in a restaurant (Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary & Thesaurus © Cambridge University Press).

Fast food-hot food that is cooked and served very quickly in special restaurants. Fast food is often the type of food you can take away to eat, for example hamburgers or fried chickenCambridge Business English Dictionary © Cambridge University Press).

Fast food-cheap, often hot food that is prepared and served quickly in a restaurant (Cambridge Academic Content Dictionary © Cambridge University Press).

Fast food – hot food that is served very quickly in special restaurants, and often taken away to be eaten in the street. [Oxford Advanced Learner’s English Dictionary, 2005,p.].

Fast food is a type of mass-produced food designed for commercial resale and with a strong priority placed on "speed of service" versus other relevant factors involved in culinary science ( Википедия. Свободная  энциклопедия).

The history of fast food

The history of fast food begins in Ancient Rome. In every Roman city there were unique snack bazaars selling all sorts of dishes. Hot bread, meat, peas, pastries, cakes of beef, mixed with nuts, which were eaten with bread - the prototype of the current  hamburgers- were suggested there .

Fast food was originally created as a commercial strategy to accommodate the larger numbers of busy commuters, travelers and wage workers who often did not have the time to sit down at a public house or diner and wait for their meal. By making speed of service the priority, this ensured that customers with strictly limited time (a commuter stopping to procure dinner to bring home to their family, for example, or an hourly laborer on a short lunch break) were not inconvenienced by waiting for their food to be cooked on-the-spot (as is expected from a traditional "sit down" restaurant). For those with no time to spare, fast food became a multibillion-dollar industry( Википедия. Свободная  энциклопедия).

The term “fast food” was first mentioned by a publishing company Merriam-Webster from the United States of America in the middle of the last century (in 1951). It was given to hot meals served in small outlets or stands, located in the crowded urban areas. They did not have any shelter from rain or tables with some seats around them, because sandwiches and crispy potatoes were not supposed to eat at the place. They were packed as “take-away” to eat “on the go” or in a car.

Nowadays fast food chains  provide simple menus, which usually contain French fries, hamburgers, sandwiches, salads, milk cocktails, brownies, hot dog, noodles of fast preparation, chips, corn flakes, donuts, pizza, popcorn and Coca-Cola.

To eat or not to eat? To drink or not to drink?

Tasty and good-looking fast food is not good for our organism at all. Almost everybody knows that is contains a lot of calories and is very fatty [see appendix 3]. But besides this fact sandwiches, hamburgers, fried potatoes and fried chicken also contain the oxidized cholesterol. It is very bad because it is favorable for the increase of the diseases and aging.

Moreover fast food also contains the number of dioxides, preservatives, and harmful lipids that are not needed by our organism at all [1].

The easiest way out from the formed situation is to have good breakfast and to find the time for cooking breakfast by yourself. Fruits, vegetables and sandwiches made of rye bread with the boiled meat or fish will be also very good. Choosing yoghurt you'll get more good and less calories than from pizza or hot dog. And you won't feel hunger longer than from eating the fatty food [2].

The world famous fresh drink Coca-Cola first was an all-purpose medicine, made in 1886 by a druggist from Atlanta, who made a brown syrup by mixing coca leaves and cola nuts. The syrup wasn’t a success and then another druggist, Jacobs, had an idea of selling Coca-Cola as a soda fountain drink. He mixed the syrup with soda water. Soon everyone was going to soda fountains and asking for Coca-Cola. An immigrant from Ireland, Candler bought the recipe of the drink and having registered the company, became its father in 1892. In 1899 the first bottling factory was opened. The exact ingredients and the quantities are not known – the  Coca-Cola  Company keeps its recipe a secret (Доли, C. История компании Coca-Cola/электр. ресурс/Адрес: http://sefire.com/2008/12/2005)

History of MacDonald’s

Nowadays hotdogs, shawarma, doughnuts and sandwiches are served in the equipped kiosks. They are mainly located in public places and along pedestrian walkways. Such restaurant as McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Celentano, KFC Fast are known as the best fast food places, where people can have a meal and enjoy their staying there. Tasty food, affordable prices, cozy seating places, nice music, stylish decorations and additional conveniences (toilets, air-conditioning, fee wi-fi) make those restaurants very popular.

Perhaps the most famous fast-food chain is McDonalds. This place is rather popular among children and grown-ups. People like having food which is cooked beforehand and served quickly. However, doctors all over the world find fast food rather unhealthy. They say that fast food contains many calories, lots of fat and just a few vitamins. They also say that eating fast food every day leads to overweight and stomach problems.

The business began in 1940, with a restaurant opened by brothers Dick and Mac McDonald [see appendix 1] in San Bernardino, California. Their introduction of the "Speedee Service System" in 1948 established the principles of the modern fast-food restaurant. The original mascot of McDonald's was a man with a chef's hat on top of a hamburger shaped head whose name was "Speedee." Speedee was eventually replaced with Ronald McDonald in 1963 (Р.Крок , Р.Андерсен «Как создавалась империя»- 2008- 260 с.).

The first McDonald's restaurants opened in the United States, Canada, Costa Rica, Japan, the Netherlands, Germany, Australia, France, El Salvador and Sweden in order of openings [see appendix 2] [3].

The present corporation dates its founding to the opening of a franchised restaurant by Ray Kroc, in Des Plaines, Illinois on April 15, 1955, the ninth McDonald's restaurant overall. Kroc later purchased the McDonald brothers' equity in the company and led its worldwide expansion and the company became listed on the public stock markets in 1965. Kroc was also noted for aggressive business practices, compelling the McDonald brothers to leave the fast food industry. The McDonald brothers and Kroc feuded over control of the business, as documented in both Kroc's autobiography and in the McDonald brothers' autobiography. The site of the McDonald brothers' original restaurant is now a monument [5].

McDonald's sells hamburgers, various types of chicken sandwiches and products, French fries, soft drinks, breakfast items, and desserts. In most markets, McDonald's offers salads and vegetarian items, wraps and other localized fare. Portugal is the only country with McDonald's restaurants serving soup [3]

The danger of obesity

The problem of fat children has become of great importance recently [see appendix 4 and 5]. According to statistics nowadays almost every fourth citizen ofthe planet suffers from obesity. And doctors are especially preoccupied by the rising statistics of children who suffer from it. If present trends are not stopped by 2032 almost the half of world's population will suffer from obesity. And the number of children who suffer from obesity may gain the number of a million in four years already.

Obesity is very dangerous for life, so, people start to fight against it and even propose to get the help of the social services. As obesity is one of the forms of overfeeding, then it is the result of inadvertence of parents. That is why the social services must start to pay attention to the problem of children overeating .

There is an opinion that fast food is unhealthy and must be forbidden. Children and teenagers love hamburgers and french fries so much that they become addicted to them and ready to eat them all day and night! This is a rapidly digestible kind of  food and in a short period after the meal, people feel hungry again. As a result, they consume more calories than it is prescribed as the day norm. In combination with low physical activities, such an unhealthy diet leads to overweight and obesity. In 2014, the World Health Organization published a special report about that.

Obesity is one of the most spread diseases of the economically developed countries where the quarter of population has the mass of the body that exceeds the normal one in 15%. According to the forecasts of experts its level will increase in 8% more by 2010 if modern trends are not changed. In fact by 2025 there will be more than 300 millions people with the diagnosis obesity [see appendix 7].

Although obesity is defined as the plenty of fat in the organism, it is the complex state that is considered to be the chronic disease connected with the cardio-vascular system disorders and the range of other pathological disorders [1].

The most spread reasons for obesity are the genetic factor, the specialities of behaviour (overeating), the disorders of the endocrine system and the environment. As any other disease it is favorable for the development of many other diseases.

In the conclusion I’d like to say that one of the greatest mistakes of people is eating without such necessity. The main reason for obesity is overeating because the majority of people can't stop eating. Concerning fast food, I may say that it looks very nice and appetizing and people can’t lose the habit of it. But the problem is not even that they can't stop eating but that they eat huge courses even when they don't want to eat it.

In the conclusion I’d like to stress that having made these experiments each of it proves that fast food is a real problem in our society and our lives are in danger. So we must eat it as less as possible.

The influence of the colours

Usually all buyers consider that the quality of all food is connected with the look of these products and especially with their color [see appendix 6].

Usually the yellow and golden colors are considered to be the sign of good quality. There are a lot of coloring agents and similar substances in the world, but the majority of producers choose the cheapest one. And one of such agents is E 102. In fact this substance is simply the industrial waste. This substance refers to the group of food additives that are not met in nature but are got with the chemical way. But this makes it extremely dangerous for health (Евсеев К.И. Быстрая едамедленный яд? //Аргументы и факты.-2008, №25).

Later the investigations were held that showed that 1% of the patients that suffer from the urticaria got it in the result of E 102 consumption. According to Indian investigations more than 3.8 – 4.2% of patients had the allergic reaction to the use of coloring agent.

After this data became spread in mass media, many countries of the world started to fight against this coloring agent using in the food industry. After this fact the new data was got according to which 20% of people had already the undesirable reaction to this coloring agent. That means the number of people the organism of which reacted to this substance increases [1].

Milyausha Sargalieva

Here are some tips from our school nurse concerning healthy food.

                      1.   Concentrate on your food.

                      2.   Have healthy snacks.

                      3.   Drink water instead of Coke and juice.

                      4.   Don’t eat after 6 p.m.

                      5.   Don’t mix fats and carbohydrates.

                      6.   Eat smaller portions .

                      7.   Eat a lot of low-fat food and  more fibre.

Experimental investigation

What are harmful ingredients in Coca- Cola?

Coca -Cola contains very important chemical substances called Phosphorous Acid and Citric Acid.

Experiment 1

Do acids make coke clean things?

Getting acquainted with the history and the process of fast food industry, we have learned that in a fast food restaurant it is not accidental that a drink which is being offered is cold soda. It turns out cold soda helps small absorption in the body and so after a short time we will again experience the feeling of hunger.

In addition, we often heard from our parents and from the doctors that the consumption of carbonated drinks is very harmful to our bodies.

We decided to test this experimentally. We took Coke as a sample. As test samples we took rusty nails, chicken meat and bones. All of these samples were put down into the Coca Cola. From the first minutes we saw what changes have occurred to our samples. The chicken, which we filled with carbonated water, immediately surfaced and began to increase in volume. By the evening of the first day a piece of meat increased twice. After 2-3 days the nail, that was filled with carbonated water  began to clear. The meat, which was covered with sparkling water, became loose and was painted in orange and brown colors and spread the rotten smell. The bone that was floating in soda had become colored and soft. The nail that was filled with sparkling water was almost clean. And on the walls of the cup with soda water there was muddy sediment from dyes added to these waters.

Thus, we have made the following conclusion - if the soda was able to change the way the samples had taken, then, it is so destructive to our bodies. The chicken meat and the bone can be exactly correlated with our internal organs and bones. And if the soda can clean such a strong rust from iron objects, what then happens to our bodies, how much it is exhausted under the influence of the drinks.

Coca - cola is good for cleaning and it is bad for drinking.

                                                                  Experiment 3

Is Fast Food bad for our health? Why?

Home-made food and fast food: a hamburger and a French potato
In the third experiment we took a hamburger with potato from MacDonald’s and a cutlet with potato from home. MacDonald’s potato and a hamburger are in the left side, home-made potato and a cutlet are in the right side.  We put them into bottles. As you can see at the photos, home-made potato became to grow musty through 6 days while MacDonald’s potato- through 10 days. MacDonald’s hamburger didn’t grow musty at all. Fast food looks better than home-made food after 10 days. Why?
In conclusion I may say that  almost all fast food products contain a lot of carcinogens and they are harmful for us. For example, E 102 (the industrial waste).

Experiment 4

In our fourth experiment we made a survey among the students of the 6th form. We were interested if they knew something about MacDonald’s and its harmful food for our health. You can see the questions and the results in the diagrams (appendix ).We can see that fast food is very popular among our students. All students have visited Macdonald’s more than once. More than a half of students like to eat fast food. They like chips, hamburgers, pizza, hot dogs best of all. Most of the students know that fast food can damage their health but can’t lose the habit of it. 50 % of students have had problems with their health after visiting MacDonald’s.

Health is not valued till sickness comes.

Eating Fast Food is not a healthy habit. You should eat less Fast Food as it's not good for your health. If you continue eating Fast Food you could get fatter. Eating fatty and sugary foods causes brain chemical changes. This explains both the depression and the negative behavior cycle. If you always eat Fast Food, you do the following things to your body:  raise your blood pressure, weaken your immune system, your blood sugar level, increase your fat storage, increase your chances, heart disease, cancer, a headache.

If you want to be healthy use the nutritionists’ recommendations:

Cut back on the convenience foods - fast foods, microwave meals, and so on.

Drink at least 2-3 liters of water in a day is recommended for everyone.

Minerals and vitamins should come from vegetables, fruits, legumes, pulses, grains, cereals and nuts.

      Use food with healthy calories.

Personally, I think that every man must think about his life,     make right decisions. The health of a person is the main     value in the life. There is no price for it. Being sick, you     cannot realize all your dreams and be successful in the     modern world

Having analyzed all facts we came to the conclusion that fast food is really harmful for people’s health. So it destroys our hypothesis about healthy fast food in MacDonald’s and everywhere. In spite of it, children love to go to MacDonald’s and we would recommend to the parents to limit the numbers of visiting such institutions. MacDonald’s is trying to do his restaurants more attractive for families with children, trying to attract more visitors to get profit.

Medical statistics says that no one got anything good. It can reflect to your health. You gain unnecessary weight, problems with your inner organs, your skin and even your hair.

I think that this work is very useful for me. Now I know that in spite of the attractiveness of MacDonald’s and the other restaurants of fast food it is better to eat home-made food.
