Adverbial Modifier a secondary part of a sentence describes the circumstantial attributes of an action or state defines an action or other attribute in a qualitative or quantitative sense is verb- and adverb- oriented
Adverbial Modifier of time Answer questions When? Since when? Until when? How long? Mean time or a duration of events
Ways of expressing: May be expressed by a Noun e.g. I will come tomorrow. a Prepositional Phrase e.g. This happened the year before the war of our Associates. a Participle II preceded by when/while e.g. When invited, he became happier
Ways of expressing: a Participle or a Participle Phrase e.g. Take care crossing the street… a Gerund with a Preposition or a Gerundial Phrase and Clauses of Place e.g. You won’t recognize the house when you come next time.
Ways of expressing: a Gerund, Gerung in a Perfect form e.g. One day, on returning to his hotel, he found a note in his room. At first he couldn’t understand. After thinking it over he hit upon the explanation. And I’ll wash the dishes and clean up before coming to bed. They left the restaurant, having spent two hours over lunch.
Ways of expressing: the Infinitive e.g. His father lived to be ninety. (lived till he was ...) I may not live to reach the airstrip this afternoon. (may not live till I reach ...) Go away! I shudder to see you here. (I shudder when I see ..., if I see ...)
Ways of expressing: The special case: by Conjunctions when/while and the Noun with our without Preposition after them e.g. When out of the flame (= when the wire is out of the flame) it again becomes magnetic. The worthy old lady took a fancy to Rawdon Crawley when a boy.
The place in the sentence Adverbial Modifier of Time is at the third place when there are Adverbial Modifiers of Manner (the 1st place) and the Adverbial Modifiers of Place (the 2nd place) e.g. The scouts were moving noiselessly along a narrow path in the dead of night.
The place in the sentence If the Adverbial Modifier of Place is expressed by the longer word group than the AM of Time then the AM of Place follows by the AM of Time. e.g. I shall see him tomorrow at the meeting of the scientific society.
The place in the sentence If we want to single out the AM of Time we can put it before the Subject. e.g. "Some day I may be able to do it," said Alan. If the are two AMs of Time in the sentence the notion which is narrower comes before the second one. e.g. Не was sitting on a bench in the park.
