  I. Introduction
  I have chosen the project work “Wales” because I learn English language at school and I know that Wales is one of the English-speaking countries, a part of United Kingdom. But also, I know that Wales has its own culture and its own language, so, I decided to learn more about this interesting country.
  The problem is that when we say “English” we mainly mean only England and the USA. For me it was no difference between England and United Kingdom. But this year we have learnt a lot about the UK, so I understood that England is just a part of the UK as well as three other countries. So, I have chosen Wales to show that the UK is a multicultural and multilingual country. In my opinion, Wales is the best example of it.
  Main goals:
  1) to learn how to find, systematize and use the information.
  2) To summarize the information into a short report.
  3) To talk about the topic of the report.
  4) To widen my and my classmates’ vocabulary and knowledge about Wales.

  Wales is the English-speaking country which is the part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It is a unique country with a very rich culture, its own language which is one of the oldest in the world and the wonderful nature. The capital of Wales is Cardiff which is the largest city in Wales and is also the financial, cultural, industrial and sporting center of the country. Let’s learn more about Wales.

  1. Etymology
   Although Celtic speaking peoples were living in Britain long before the arrival of the invaders, it was the Celts and not the invaders 
  who came to be called "strangers" in Old English. The English words for the descendants of one of these Celtic peoples, Welsh, and for their homeland, Wales, come from the Old English word wealh, meaning "foreigner, stranger, Celt." Its plural wealas is the 
  direct ancestor of Wales, literally  "foreigners, Celts.

  As The part of Great Britain the National Anthem of Wales is “God, Save the Queen/King”. But the country has also its own unofficial anthem. Its name in English is “Land of my Fathers.

  The national flag - The Red Dragon (or in Welsh Y Ddraig Goch) - was granted official status in 1959, but the dragon itself has been associated with Wales for centuries. Some say it’s the oldest national flag still in uses.

  The Daffodil
  The daffodil is the national flower of Wales, and is worn on St. David”s Day each 1 March.
  The Leek
  According to legend St David advised the Britons on the eve of a battle with the Saxons, to wear leeks in their caps so as to easily distinguish friend from foe.  This helped to secure a great victory. Today Welsh people around the world wear leeks on St David's Day.

  The harp is regarded as the national instrument of Wales.  By the end of the 18th century, the triple harp - so called because it had three rows of strings - was widely known as the Welsh harp on account of its popularity in Wales.

  The Crest of three ostrich plumes and the motto "Ich Dien" (I serve) were adopted by Edward the Black Prince at the Battle of Crecy. Edward became Prince of Wales in 1343, and was a popular leader - so much so that thousands of Welshmen joined him to fight in the French wars. In fact, a quarter of Edward's troops were composed of Welsh archers and spearmen. The crest is used today in royal heraldry and the feathers still adorn the badge of the National Rugby Union team of Wales.

  In conclusion I would like to talk about the Welsh national costume and the main festival which is held in Wales – National Eisteddfod of Wales.

  1. NATIONAL COSTUME
  For the ladies the typical Welsh costume consists of a hat, made of black felt, with a high crown and wide brim. A red flannel shawl is worn over a crisp white blouse, and a full skirt made of wool with a black and white check pattern and a starched, white apron.

  The most important eisteddfod is the National Eisteddfod of Wales, the largest festival of competitive music and poetry in Europe. Its eight days of competitions and performances, entirely in the Welsh language, are staged annually in the first week of August usually alternating between North and South Wales.
