Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland, the second largest city in Scotland and the seventh-most populous in the United Kingdom. Located in the south-east of Scotland, Edinburgh lies on the east coast of the Central Belt, along the Firth of Forth, near the North Sea. Edinburgh
Edinburgh is the seat of the Scottish Parliament. The city was one of the major centres of the Enlightenment, led by the University of Edinburgh, earning it the nickname Athens of the North. The Old Town and New Town districts of Edinburgh were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. There are over 4,500 listed buildings within the city. In 2005, the population of Scotland amounted to 457,830 people.
Attractions in Edinburgh The National Gallery of Scotland. The building, which was designed by William Henry Playfair, first opened to the public in 1859.

The Scottish National Portrait Gallery is an art gallery on Queen Street, Edinburgh, Scotland. It holds the national collections of portraits, all of which are of, but not necessarily by, Scots. In addition it also holds the Scottish National Photography Collection. It is a red sandstone Gothic revival building, designed by Robert Rowand Anderson and built between 1885 and 1890, and modelled on the Doges Palace in Venice.
Writers Museum . The exhibition of the museum dedicated to the life and works of the great Scottish writers and poets (Sir Walter Scott, Robert Burns, Robert Louis Stevenson and others).
Museum of Childhood . The museum contains a large collection of toys (from dolls to tricycles) from all parts of the world.
National Gallery of Modern Art in Scotland was founded in 1960. Currently, the gallery has a collection of more than 5000 objects of art a variety of genres - from paintings to video installations.

Edinburgh Castle - an ancient fortress on Castle Rock in the heart of the Scottish capital - Edinburgh. Until recently was at the disposal of the British Ministry of Defense. The castle is open for visits and is a major tourist attraction in Edinburgh.
