Almaty is the largest city in Kazakhstan with population close to 1.5 million. From 1929 till 1998, it was the country's capital called Alma-Ata. The real Almaty's glory comes from famous "Silk Road" times, when the city was a major stop for passing caravans between West and East.
Chimkent is located in Southern part of Kazakhstan. It is the third largest city in the country and among top major stops of the Turkestan-Siberian Railroad. First signs of Chimkent as a settled place go back to the 12th century and directly connected to the Silk Road.
Samarkand is the second-largest city in Uzbekistan .The city is most noted for its central position on the Asian Shadow of the Silk Road between China and the west.It is located at the altitude of 702 meters. In 2001, UNESCO inscribed the 2750-year-old city on the World Heritage List as Samarkand - Crossroads of Cultures
Some argue that this gigantic ruined mosque was built by Timur's Mongol wife, Bibi-Khanym while Timur was away campaigning. According to one of the legends, the architect fell madly in love with her and refused to complete the job unless she agreed to kiss him. The kiss left a mark and the outraged Timur ordered both killed.
