British cuisine main national dishes and their history
British cuisine and its ingredients were shaped by the climate, history and geographical position of the country. Some people criticize English food. They say it’s boring, tasteless, its chips with everything and totally overcooked vegetables. If you ask any man to name some typically English dishes, they will probably say pudding, roast beef, Shepherd’s pie and “Fish and chips”
“Fish and chips” “Fish and chips” are classical English take-away food and the traditional national food of England. It became popular in the 1860’s when railways began to bring fresh fish straight from the east coast. Traditionally, the dish is covered with salt and vinegar. It is eaten with fingers out of paper which it is wrapped in.
Shepherd’s pie and roast beef Shepherd’s pie is made with minced lamb and vegetables topped with mashed potato. Roast beef is a traditional component of Sunday lunch while typical breakfast includes eggs, bacon, sausages, toasts, mushrooms and baked beans.
Yorkshire pudding Yorkshire pudding is a dish that originated in Yorkshire, England. It is made from butter, like pancakes, and usually served with roast meat. There are hundreds of variations of sweet puddings, but each pudding begins with the same ingredients. This course is an integral part of any celebration: Christmas, wedding or family party.
It is disappointing but true that English cooking is found at home. So it is difficult to find a good English restaurant. In most cities in Britain you’ll find Indian, Chinese, French and Italian restaurants.
