CASE STUDY: BIG BUSINESS AND ENVIRONMENT
Dilemma: Sir John Harold Clapham, a British economic historian, once said “Economic advance is not the same thing as human progress”. Study the resources you are provided with in this PPT presentation together with the other resources available and describe the relation between “Big Business and Environment in the modern world. GOOD LUCK!

VOCABULARY REVISION: Revise the vocabulary items studied at the previous lessons and do the exercise. Read the definition, then find the corresponding term from the vocabulary studied before, and insert the term into the gap in the context-giving sentence: Definition Term Context (1) Not causing damage to the environment. READING: Read the following extracts about the environmental problems caused by the business factors. Select the appropriate headlines for them from the list given below: (1) The White House has removed sections of a report by the US Government's own environmental agency to water down references to “Big Enterprise” causing global warming. Climate change "has global consequences for human health and the environment» was changed to "may have potentially profound consequence." (2) "Without being forced to improve fuel economy by the government, the auto business doesn't do it," said Daniel Becker, the top global warming expert for the Sierra Club. "Congress has to require energy savings in the energy bill that comes to the floor next week or the auto business will continue to go in reverse." (3) One of the problems is that the environmental movement is not a monolith. There are lots of different groups with different priorities, that is why making a grand bargain is very hard. The people who care about climate change, for example, might be willing to trade oil drilling in Alaska for better auto mileage standards, but the wildlife types wouldn't hear of it. Because of this, as well as the varying levels of self-righteousness and extremism between and within organizations, it’s hard to develop an overall environmental position. Obviously, the business community has similar problems. But somehow the Republicans, who carry most of the water for business interests, manage to sort that out better than the Dems do for environmentalists. (4) From the beginning, President Bush has been far more interested in exploiting the public lands for commercial purposes than in protecting their environmental values. On matters ranging from snowmobiles in Yellowstone to roadless areas in the national forests, his administration has tried steadily to chip away at safeguards put in place by the Clinton administration — largely in an effort to help the oil, gas, timber and mining industries, and often in cavalier disregard for environmental reviews mandated by law. Now comes another devastating blow: The revelation that his Department of the Interior is no longer interested in recommending any of the millions of acres under its jurisdiction for permanent wilderness protection. (5) The world's eight leading economies have declared they'll make immediate cuts to greenhouse gas emissions. And they've launch a coordinated fight against eco-criminals trafficking in endangered species and hazardous chemicals. Environment ministers from the G8 -- Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia and the United States -- say such emissions have to be cut to combat climate change, which they say is the biggest environmental threat. And they've pledged to end ecological crime through better coordinated policies in the eight member countries. The two-day gathering in Leeds Castle in southeast England was organized mainly to discuss ways to meet the 5.2 per cent reduction in emissions of six greenhouse gases by 2008-2012 -- pledged in the Kyoto pact signed in Japan in December. MOVIE-EXTRACT WATCHING: Pre-watching question: Have you ever heard about any really big company concealing its harmful activity from the public so as it could gain profit by causing damage to the environment? Before you watch pay attention to the words which may be unknown to you and do the matching task: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELzu636Xf6Y to have something/nothing to do with контрольный monitoring (adj.) специалист по токсикологии to be on smb’s property представители компании Пи-Джи-энд-И hexavalent chromium иметь/не иметь отношение к чему-либо toxicologist загрязненный, отравленный the guys from PG&E шестивалентный хром exposure принадлежать кому-либо 8. poisonous зд.воздействие
Now watch the extract from the Erin Brockovich Movie and fill in the gaps: Victim: An on-site (1) __________ (controlling, monitoring) well? That means it was… Erin Brockovich: It’s on the PG&E property. V: And you say that this stuff, this hexavalent chromium… Well, it’s (2) __________ (dangerous, killing, poisonous). E.B: Yeah… V: Well… Erin… It’s gotta be different than what’s in our (3) __________ (soil, water, food), because ours is okay. The (4) __________ (managers, representatives, guys) from PG&E told me. They sat right in the kitchen and told me that it was fine. E.B: I know. But the (5) __________ (toxicologist, doctor, physician) that I’ve been talking to… he gave me a list of (6) __________ (diseases, problems, natural disasters) that come from hexavalent chromium exposure. Everything you all have is on that list. V: No, no, no… That’s not what… That’s not what our (7)______________ (physician, toxicologist, doctor) said. He said that… Well, that one’s (8) __________ (got absolutely nothing to do, got no connection) with the other. E.B: But PG&E (9) __________ (sacked, paid for, sent for) your doctor. V: Ashley! Shanna! Get out of the pool! Decide whether the given sentences are true or false (if false, make all necessary corrections): The PG&E Company mentioned in the extract from the Erin Brockovich Movie fully takes the responsibility for the pollution of the environment and causing damage to people’s health. The victim of the PG&E Company was brainwashed by the perfectly-working system of concealing the consequences of the company’s harmful activity. In spite of being profit-orientated the PG&E Company hired the whole team of toxicologists to monitor the environment in the region and protect it from the poisonous wastes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELzu636Xf6Y
In groups read and listen to the information about the companies’ harmful activity. For each sentence guess the type of environmental problem and fill in the crossword puzzle. Coca-Cola is under scrutiny from watchdog organizations for damaging aqua-system. McDonald's, the largest employer of youth on the planet, made the world sink in their throwaways like plates, cups and cutlery. While building new stores Wal-Mart, the largest employer in the world, tends to destroy plantation and woods by paving marvelous landscapes with asphalt. Hewlett-Packard – the company that has dramatically improved and transformed human life – conducted the unsanctioned burial of chemical waste more than once… Mitsubishi and DaimlerChrysler created millions of workplaces, gave people the joy of possessing a car… and helped damage the atmosphere by sending out exhaust fumes from their products. ↓W1 →A5 R P N R ↓S4 ↓D3 →P2 C W E L P N N N
