The famous Russian writer Dostoyevsky lived in Omsk from 1850 to 1854. The persons that were exiled in Siberia greatly influenced the cultural traditions of Siberians because many of them were of European education and culture, they spoke some foreign languages, could paint, play various musical instruments. Omsk is a big administrative, industrial and cultural centre of the Omsk region. There are a lot of great industrial enterprises. Many of them were evacuated from central and southern Russia during World War II. They produce space and aircraft, airplane engine, TV and radio sets, washing machines, textile, food.
The oldest is the academic drama theatre that is one of the oldest in Siberia. Omsk Drama theatre was built in 1905. The first play staged here was “ An inspector’s Visit” (« Ревизор») by Nikolai Gogol. During World War II it sheltered the Moscow Vakhtangov theatre . Many outstanding actors ( Mikhael Ulyanov, Vatslav Dvorzhetsky, Tatyana Ozhegova ) started their career on Omsk stage.
