Moscow is the capital of Russia. It was founded by Prince Yuri Dolgoruky in 1147.
The heart of Moscow is the Kremlin. It was built as an island fortress. Around it was water: the Moskva River and the Neglinnaya River. The Kremlin was built on the left bank of the Moskva River. Around the Kremlin there is a high wall of 2 kilometers long. The walls were of wood, and then of stone. The Kremlin has 20 towers.
The symbol of the Kremlin is the Spasskaya Tower. It was built in 1491 and it is 71 meters high. On the tower there is the clock which tells time to the people in Russia.
There is the Tsar Bell in the Moscow Kremlin that was made by the Russian cast master Ivan Motorin and his son Mikhail in 1735. This is the heaviest bell (more than 200 tons) but is doesn’t ring.
The Tsar Cannon is a very large cannon that can be seen in the Moscow Kremlin. It was made by the cast master Andrei Chokhov in Moscow in 1586 to defend the city but it has never been fired. The cannon weighs 44 tons.
Red Square is the central square of Moscow. It is one of the biggest and most beautiful squares in the world. It is 695 meters long. It is a place for walks, meetings, demonstrations.
There is the Vassily Blazhenny Cathedral on Red Square. It was built by the architects Barma and Postnik in 1555-1561 in honour of the victory of the Russians over the Kazan khanate. The Cathedral is often taken as a symbol of Moscow.
Next to the Vassily Blazhenny Cathedral stands the monument to Minin and Pozharsky. Under the leadership of these heroes of the 1612 war the Russian people drove the Polish invaders out of Moscow.
At the foot of the Kremlin wall there is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
The original building of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour was started in 1839 and finished in 1883. It was designed by the famous architect Konstantin Thon and devoted to the victory of the Russian army over Napoleon’s troops in the Patriotic War of 1812.
The Tretyakov Gallery is an art gallery and one of the greatest museums in the world. The main building of the gallery was designed by Vasnetsov in 1902. There are more than 60 thousand works of painting, sculpture, drawing in the gallery.
Pavel Tretyakov, a Moscow merchant, began collecting pictures in 1856.He had been collecting pictures for 42 years. In 1892, when he had 1200 paintings and several hundreds of sculptures, he presented his collection to the city of Moscow.

The Ostankino Television Tower is one of the tallest TV towers in the world. Its height is 540 meters. It was built in 1967.
Moscow University is on Vorobyovy Hills. The main building of the university has 36 stories. In front of the university there is a monument to Lomonosov. The university was built in 1755.
The Bolshoi Theatre is one of the biggest centres of the world musical culture. Moscow’s number one theatre of opera and ballet. It was founded in 1776.The building itself is an outstanding monument of Russian classical architecture (the architect O.Bovet,1825).
On the front of the Obraztsov Puppet Theatre there is a clock which is decorated with fairy-tale characters. There is no other clock of this kind in the world.
