  1.Museums
  1.1The Savitsky Art Gallery
  
  The pride of Penza is the Savitsky Art Gallery named after the painter and first director of the Penza Fine Arts School. It was founded in 1892. The gallery contains a collection of over 12 thousand works including paintings, engravings, and sculptures by Russian and West-European masters.

  1.2 The Museum of One Painting
  
  It is the only museum of its kind in Russia. Here people come to hear about one single artist and one single painting. The visitors to this museum really have the feeling they are getting to know the work by concentrating on a single masterpiece.

  1.3 The Folk Art Museum
  
  At the Museum of folk art you can see «Matroshki» dolls , Abashev toys, kitchen utensils with traditional painting and other things that are unique only to the Penza region. Even the exterior of the museum is an example of the traditional folk art.

  1.4.The Art School
  The Art School is housed in one of the finest buildings of Penza, designed by an architect named Maksimov. The Art School is one of the oldest educational establishments in Penza. It was founded in 1898 at the initiative of N.D.Seliverstov, the major of Penza at that time. The well-known painter, K.A.Savitsky, was appointed to be the director of the Art school.

  The Art School and the Picture Gallery were at the same building at first. Seliverstov’s own private collection formed the basis of the museum. Thanks to the efforts of Savitsky and other members of Russian intelligentsia the collection was enlarged. Later the Picture Gallery moved to its current location.

  2.Theatres
  2.1. Penza Drama Theatre
  Theatrical performances are mentioned as early as 1738. At this time, peasants performed in traveling troupes wherever they could. In 1896, Penza’s public theatre was opened by progressive representatives of the city’s intelligentsia. It was established in what is currently Belinski Square. Then at the end of 1915, a new theatre was constructed named after Czar Alexander II. In 1924, the theater was renamed after A.V. Lunarcharski. In 1993 it celebrated its 200th anniversary.

  2.2. Meyerhold’s House
  It was once said that, "Meyerhold gave roots to the theaters of the future”. Meyerhold was born in 1874 in Penza. He became a very famous actor and director in Moscow and St. Petersburg, and later, the director of the Moscow Theater that was later named after him following his death in 1940. To get a better idea of the influence Meyerhold had on theater and for Penza's rich theatrical history, you can visit the Museum of the Theater which used to be Meyerhold's parents house.

  3.Monuments
  3.1. The Memorial Monument to
  Glory on the War Front and the
  Home Front
  The largest monument in Penza is
  the monument erected in 1975 to honor
  the strength and sacrifice of everyone
  involved in the Second World War.
  The monument is heavily symbolic
  with its protective soldier guarding
  the woman and the child holding a
  golden twig representing peace.
  There is an eternal flame in front of the

  3.2.The Pioneer Monument
  This large monument is found in Kirov Street of a man holding a sword and a plow standing near his horse. This monument represents the first settler of Penza who is both a defender against the attacks of the Eastern armies and a farmer, the two roles Penza originally held in the history of Russia.

  3.3. The Obelisk of Glory
  
  It is found along the Sura river. It looks like a small sprout emerging from the ground. Inside a nearby carved, stone wall, it is said to have a letter written in 1917 after the Russian Revolution. The letter is addressed to the citizens of Penza to be opened in the year 2017.
