Rock and Roll music developed in the United States in the early 1950s. It was based on the music called Rhythm and Blues that was performed by Afro-American musicians. Early Rock and Roll singers developed their own kinds of music. Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry and Bob Dylan were the most popular Rock and Roll musicians in the early 1960s. They were American performers.

In the 1960s a new Rock and Roll group from England invaded America: “The Beatles ”. Their music shook America like an earthquake. “The Beatles” changed Rock and Roll forever. Their early songs were influenced by Chuck Berry. But “The Beatles” looked different and sounded different. “The Beatles” released their first album in the United States in 1964. Their album “Sergent Pepper’’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” was released in 1967. It was the first “concept” album. All the songs were linked by a common idea. The popularity of “The Beatles” led the way for more Rock and Roll bands from England to become popular in America. “The Rolling Stones” was the most important of these bands.

The musical instrument most linked to Rock and Roll is the guitar. Jimi Hendrix was the most influential guitar player during the late 1960s. He made electric guitar music more expressive by creating new sounds. By the 1970s, Rock and Roll music became Rock music. It expanded into many new forms: Punk Rock, Jazz Rock and Glitter Rock. Rock music became a bigger business than ever. Many of these songs were about social issues. The effects of unemployment and war in Vietnam were sung about.

A new kind of music called Rap music became popular in the 1980s. It developed from culture of young Afro-Americans . Rap songs are spoken over the sounds of electronic rhythms. During the 1980s a lot of performers began to show their music in short films called music videos. They included music, acting, dancing and unusual special effects. In 1981 MTV, the Music Television Network, began showing these programs on cable television in America. Michael Jackson , the most famous singer and dancer, made several very successful music videos. In 1982 MTV began showing music videos from his album “Thriller.” That is why this album was sold very much. Michael Jackson happened to become the most popular performer in the history of Rock music

In 2001 the group “Sleater-Kinney” was declared “America’s Best Rock Band”. Yet radio stations rarely play their music. “Sleater-Kinney” is an all-female band that was formed in 1994.
