Literature plays a key rote in global culture. It educates and entertains us, brings past centuries to life and helps us to understand our deepest dreams and fears.
3 слайд
A book is one of the greatest wonders in the world. It gives us a unique chance to link up with authors who lived hundreds and thousands of years ago. Thanks to books we can talk to people who lived in different ages and countries. Through reading books we hear their voices, thoughts and feelings.
4 слайд
A book is a faithful and undemanding friend: it can be put aside and taken up again at any moment. It is practically impossible today to imagine our life without books.
5 слайд
But very seldom people think about a long way the book has become. And nobody knows when fiction began. Maybe the first storyteller was a prehistoric mother trying to explain the world to her children. Story telling was a purely oral activity until around 800 B.C.
6 слайд
Myths and tales were passed down by word of mouth and had to be memorized by each new generation of storytellers. Only Ancient Greeks started to keep written records of certain stories.
7 слайд
The earliest surviving examples of this are the epic poems of Homer (a blind professional storyteller who lived in the 8th B.C.).
8 слайд
For a long time people used papyrus and skins of different animals to write on. Then the Chinese invented paper.
9 слайд
At that time there were not so many books as there are now. All the books were written by hand with pen and ink especially by monks. Much time spent on writing a book made it very expensive.
10 слайд
At last men learned how to print. The machine was developed and invented by a German—Johannes Gutenberg in the mid — 15th century. He built and operated the first ever printing press with movable metal letters in the city of Mainz.
11 слайд
The first English printer was William Caxton (born in 1422 in Kent). He printed his first book in 1477. It was the first book printed in the English language:
“Tales of Troy” (Caxton's translation from French). This book helped people to learn the alphabet and taught them to read.

Thanks to Gutenberg's discovery, written fiction was able to reach & massive new audience; it was a gradual process which slowly took place over several generations as more and more printing presses began to operate across Europe; and thanks to the Renaissance and the gradual spread of education, more and more people teamed to read.

The most important forms of literature in the 16th and 17th centuries were drama and poetry, and in the 18th century novel appeared. A new form had an enormous impact on literature and people. Novels were full of believable characters and exciting adventures; they entertain people with tales of everyday life.
16 слайд
In the 19th century it was a great boom in literature which led to huge profits for publishers and made best-selling authors like Charles Dickens, Leo Tolstoy, Mark Twain and Thomas Hardy world-famous names. In fact literature was undoubtedly the developed worlds most dynamic and popular art form and it is still sow alongside with radio, cinema and television.

In spite of the fact that there are plenty of books printed in different parts of the world, they are still expensive. Some people have very good and widely read libraries at home, but some who can't afford buying and collecting books borrow them from the libraries.
20 слайд
A library is a collection of books; it is also a building where there is a large collection of books, magazines, newspapers and also CDs, audio and videocassettes. There are libraries for grownups and for children; mere are local, central and school libraries. There are also world-famous libraries as the Public Library and the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. and Library in the British Museum in London.
21 слайд
The library in the British Museum contains more than 6 mln books as it has a copy of every book printed in the English language. You can find there a vast collection of printed books and manuscripts (like Gutenberg Bible), books by die famous writers in the original, and also some of the first English books printed by Caxton.

The reading-room of the British Museum is a good place for students and professors to read, work and study.
Many famous great men have read and studied mere.

As for me I'm fond of reading. I became very keen on literature early in life. Books stirred my imagination, expanded the boundaries of the familiar world and filled my life with great expectations of joy and happiness. Since childhood I have been enchanted by Pushkin and Gogol, Chekhov and Turgenev, by poetry of Yesenin and Pasternak. Later on I got acquainted with Dante's "Divine Comedy" and Ancient Greek mythology and legends.

My favourite foreign writer is 0. Henry. I was deeply impressed by his story “The Last Leaf”. I bear in my heart the image of a young I girl suffering from incurable illness and her friends doing everything possible to give her hope and bring back to life. The author penetrates deeply into a person's soul and reveals its best qualities. He obviously f sympathizes with common people, describes their feelings to other ' people, their warm-heartedness and kindness.

O. Henry (1862-1910)
O.Henry was a prolific American short-story writer, a master of surprise endings, who wrote about the life of ordinary people in New York City. A twist of plot, which turns on an ironic or coincidental circumstance, is typical of O. Henry's stories.
William Sydney Porter (O. Henry) was born in Greenboro, North Carolina. His father was a physician. When William was three, his mother died, and he was raised by his paternal grandmother and aunt. After moving to Austin, Texas, in 1882, he married.
While in prison O. Henry started to write short stories to earn money to support his daughter Margaret. His first work, "Whistling Dick's Christmas Stocking" (1899), appeared in McClure's Magazine. After doing three years of the five years sentence, Porter emerged from the prison in 1901 and changed his name to O. Henry.
O. Henry published 10 collections and over 600 short stories during his lifetime. O. Henry's last years were shadowed by alcoholism, ill health, and financial problems. O. Henry died of cirrhosis on June 5, 1910, in New York.

The plot

Meeting at the quiet small park.
The action took place in the quiet small park at the beginning of twilight. The young man came to the young girl in the grey dress which had come in the park every day. She was very beautiful, but he had a simple coat and common face. He was a rich man, but she was a poor woman.
40 слайд
At the beginning of conversation the young man said to the girl that he liked her, but she answered in an icy tone that she was a lady and she pretended to be a rich woman. She said she was tired of money, pleasure, jewels and if she ever loved a man he should be a simple man.
But the young man pretended to be poor and said that he liked to read and listen to the stories about the life of the rich people.

The girl`s deception.
Suddenly the young girl started to hurry and said that the big white automobile waited for her at the corner of the park. When the young man asked to take him, she refused and answered that he could read her name from the label on the car.
42 слайд
The young man knew the truth.
The young girl stood up and went to the entrance of the park. He followed her. When she came to the car she looked at it and crossed the street, entered the restaurant and took her place of the cashier.
The young man saw it through the window, then walked slowly and stepped into the white automobile.
43 слайд
My opinion:
I find the story interesting and lively. I enjoyed reading it. My first impression was very positive, because I saw an ordinary love of ordinary people. I can`t put it down until I have finished, I was interested in the end of the story and what in fact meant that deception.
But after having read this story I understand that nobody should tell the lie. If we want to be successful, we should always tell the truth.
