Описание слайда:

There is nowhere like Scotland.Scotland is the country north of England, part of Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) and of the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland). It is a country in a country. It is often cold and grey. It rains a lot. But many visitors love this country very much. They love the beautiful empty hills, the sea and the islands. They love the big cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow. The country is special and Scottish people are special too: warm and friendly, and funny. Come with us now on a visit to Scotland. Scotland is magic. Back

Описание слайда:

There are more than five million people in Scotland. Most Scots live in the south, in or near the big cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow. Scottish people are called Scots, but not Scotch: Scotch is a drink made in Scotland. Scots people are British, because Scotland is part of Britain but, don’t call them English! The Scots and the English are different. Today everyone in Scotland speaks English (some words in Scotland are different). But at one time, people in the north and west of Scotland did not. They had a different language, a beautiful language called Gaelic. About 60,000 people speak Gaelic today, but many more want Gaelic to live: it is part of the story of Scotland. Scotland is not a very hot country so take some warm clothes with you when you go. In the summer, the days are long and it can be warm. But it can be cold and wet, too, and in the winter the days are shot and there can be show. For many years, Scotland was a poor country, but today it is getting richer. There is oil and gas in the sea between Scotland and Norway. Back

Описание слайда:

There are many important people in the story of Scotland. Between 1066 and 1328, there were many battles between England and Scotland. In 1314, the Scottish King, Robert the Bruce, beat the English at the Battle of Bannockburn. Scotland was free. For many Scots, Robert is one of the most important people in the story of Scotland. In 1542, a girl called Mary became Queen of Scotland: she was one week old. Mary, Queen of Scots became a tall and beautiful woman but she was not a very good Queen. Many Scots said they did not want her to be queen. Mary asked the English Queen, Elizabeth, to help her, but Elizabeth put her in prison for nineteen years. Mary's son, James Stuart became King of Scotland. Then in 1707, the two countries became Great Britain. Charles Stuart, Bonnie Prince Charlie, came from France to Scotland: he was the grandson of James's grandson and he wanted to be King of Scotland and England too. At the Battle of Culloden in 1746, near Inverness, the English beat Charles and the Scots. After the battle, the English soldiers tried to catch Charles but they did not find him. The people of the Highlands and the islands helped him to go back to France. Scotland stayed in Great Britain from that time to today. The man who made the first telephone, Alexander Graham Bell, was born in Scotland. John Logie Baird, who made the first television, was Scottish too. There are many other famous Scots. Back

Описание слайда:

Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland. It is an old city with many important and interesting buildings. After London, Edinburgh is the second city for visitors in Britain. If you come to Edinburgh the first thing you see is Edinburgh Castle. It stands high over the city. Soldiers in kilts take visitors round and tell them the castle's story. Edinburgh is a hilly city but it is a good city to visit on foot. After the castle, you can visit the Old Town. Go down the Royal Mile to Holyroodhouse: the Queen's home when she comes to Edinburgh. It is three hundred years old. You can look at the shops. Some shops sell the famous Scottish tartans and you can see the name of the family which goes with each tartan. If you have a Scottish family name, you can buy and wear the family tartan. In August, you can visit the Edinburgh Festival, the biggest arts festival in the world with hundreds of different things to see and do. And also in August, every evening for three weeks, you can see the Edinburgh Military Tattoo next to the castle, with soldiers and musicians from Scotland and from many other countries. Back

Описание слайда:

Glasgow is the biggest city in Scotland and the third biggest in Britain after London and Birmingham. It is not very far from Edinburgh - about fifty minutes by train - but it is very different. The river Clyde runs through the centre of Glasgow. Two hundred years ago, Glasgow was a small town. Then, British ships began to go all over the world, and shipbuilding became very important. Glasgow became a city of shipbuilders. Glasgow has universities and museums, it has many pubs and lots of things to do at night. It has seventy parks, you can often see the hills from the centre of the city. You can see many beautiful pictures in the Glasgow City Museum and Art Gallery; and in the Burrell Museum and at Pollok House. It is the city of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Mackintosh was one of the men who began a new look in building about a hundred ago: art nouveau.. Much of his best work is in Glasgow. His Glasgow School of Art is on Renfrew Street. And Glasgow is a football city. You can watch Glasgow Celtic at Parkhead or Glasgow Rangers play at the Ibrox Stadium most Saturdays between August and May. Back

Описание слайда:

The Highlands are for people who love to be outside: they are good for walking, for climbing, for fishing and for many other things. The hills are not very high - lien Nevis, the highest, is 1,344 meters - but they can sometimes be difficult and dangerous for walkers in the winter, and in the summer too. Why is the north and west of Scotland so beautiful? Because the hills are empty and because the rock is old. In the north-west of Scotland and in the Hebridean Islands, some of the rock is more than 2,700 million years old, some of the oldest in the world. There are not many trees on the hills but there is beautiful heather. The water in the lochs is cold and dark The animals are beautiful. You can see red deer here and golden eagles. Perhaps you can see an osprey catching its dinner. When you leave the road, yon are soon in an empty country where there is nothing but the hills and the sky, the birds and the animals.

Описание слайда:

Scotland has hundreds of islands. The sea and the islands are important to Scotland and they are never far away. In the south-west, it is easy to go from Glasgow to the Isle of Arran for a day. In the west, things are very different from the cities of the south: the island towns are small; many of the people on Skye and the other islands of the Hebrides speak Gaelic; they do not work or watch TV on Sundays. In the north, the Orkneys and Shetlands are not far from Norway but very far from London! Life is different here. To go to the islands, take the ferry. From Oban, you can go to some of the islands in the Inner Hebrides. Here you can see sea animals: otters and seals. You can see seabirds. You can go sailing. From Ullapool, you can take the ferry to Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. There are long, white, empty beaches here. Now we are far from Edinburgh. Our last visit is to the five thousand-year-old stone circle at Callanish on Lewis. There are fifty standing stones at Callanish. Time goes more slowly. This is also a special place. Back

Описание слайда:

When they think about Scottish tradition many people think first about the kilt. Scots want to show other people that they are Scottish. To make a kilt, you need about six metres of tartan! Different families, called dans, have different tartans. From May to September, visitors to Scotland can go to one of a hundred or more Highland Games or Gatherings. You can also see big men tossing the caber; people playing Scottish music on the bagpipes; and traditional Scottish dancing. Some 'traditions' are more for visitors. Is the Loch Ness Monster for visitors? An old story says that there is a very big animal in Loch Ness. Many people go there every year to look for it but 'Nessie' does not come. For many Scots, a much more important tradition is golf. Golf is very popular in Scotland, it is not very expensive, and there are many beautiful golf courses: more than four hundred! The golf capital of Scotland is St Andrews, a small city near Edinburgh. Back

When you visit Scotland, you can stay in a hotel or in a 'B & B' (where you get bed and breakfast). Here are five things to eat in Scotland! For breakfast, start with porridge with milk. If you feel hungry in the middle of the morning, have some Scottish shortbread with your coffee. For lunch, you can have salmon from a Scottish river. For dinner, you can eat Scottish beef - the Scots say it is the best in the world. Or you can try the famous Scottish haggis. The word whisky comes from the Gaelic uisge-beatha - the water of life. Visitors to Edinburgh can visit the Scotch Whisky Heritage Centre near the castle. But don't drink too much: whisky is very strong! Back

Описание слайда:

Scotland is a country of differences. It is a country of yesterday and of today. Visitors often go there to see the old traditions but many Scots want things to change. Many Scots do not wear kilts, they do not eat haggis, they do not belong to a clan. Many Scots love their country's past but they want Scotland to be a rich, modern country too. Many Scots today are happy to be part of Great Britain but many want a freer Scotland too. And some Scots want Scotland to leave Great Britain. Today, things are changing in Scotland. There is new life here: new business, new cinema, new music. The big cities are exciting. The country is beautiful. Scotland is magic. Back
