George Washington
In May 1775 Washington was elected Commander in Chief of the Continental army. The war lasted six years. In 1781 Washington forced the surrender of the British army. Washington was elected the first President of the United States in 1789. Because of his central and critical role in the founding of the United States, Washington is referred to as father of the nation.

The Washington monument looks like a very big pencil. It is hollow inside. A special lift brings visitors to the top, from where they can enjoy the view of the city.

Thomas Jefferson,
the third president of the USA

Jefferson served his country for more than 40 years. He was a US minister to France, Secretary of State under George Washington, Vice-President and then President of the USA from 1801 to 1809. Jefferson doubled the size of his country when he bought the huge territory of Louisiana from France.
The inscription on his tombstone reads that Thomas Jefferson was the “author of the Declaration of American Independence, author of the state of Virginia for religious freedom and the Father of the University of Virginia”.

The Jefferson Memorial
The Jefferson memorial was built in memory of the third President of the USA, Thomas Jefferson, who was also the author of the Declaration of Independence. It was opened in 1943. It is a very picturesque place, surrounded by cherry trees.

Thomas Jefferson was only 32 years old when he wrote the Declaration of American Independence. It declared American independence from great Britain and started its history as a nation. In memory of this every year Americans celebrate July 4 as independence Day.

Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln was the sixteenth President of the USA, serving from March 4,1861 until his assassination. During his term, he helped preserve the United States by leading the defeat of the Confederate States in the Civil War. He introduced measures that resulted the abolition of slavery, issuing his Emancipation Proclamation in 1863.
His assassination in 1865 was the first presidential assassination in U.S. history and made him a martyr for the ideal of national unity.

The White House
For two hundred years, the White House has stood as the symbol of the Presidency, the USA government, and the American people.

Its construction began in October, 1792 and it was completed in 1800, when President John Adams and his wife Abigail moved in. Inside this national monument there are 132 rooms: different offices, a ballroom, a library, a billiard room, a cinema, a bowling alley and an inside swimming pool.
