Kazakhstan has a population of more than 16,870,000 million people. The area of Kazakhstan is some 2,724 million square kilometers. The ethnic Kazakhs represent 60% of the population. Also Kazakhstan is inhabited by more than 130 nationalities, which preserve their language, historical and cultural values. The Republic of Kazakhstan is one of the most under populated countries in the world: population density is only 5-7 persons per square kilometer. The people are settled differently . The urban population represents over 60% of the total population. The most populous city in Kazakhstan is the "Southern capital", Almaty, which numbers about 1.5 million inhabitants today. The largest cities are Almaty,Astana, Karaganda, Shymkent, Taraz. The main nationality is Kazakh – 63%, then Russian –35%, Uzbek – 3 %, Ukranian ,Uighur, Tatar- 2 %, German –4% and others – 5%.
