Tower Bridge and London Bridge
Tower Bridge An internationally-recognised landmark which to millions of tourists symbolises London. It is one of the finest, most famous bridges in the World. Tower Bridge was built between 1886 and 1894.
Tower Bridge is the only Thames bridge which can be raised. In Victorian times the bridge would open more than 6,000 times a year. Now it opens for river traffic about 900 times a year.
London Bridge This is the oldest of the four. Various wooden bridges stood on or near this site since before Roman times. Eventually wooden bridges were replaced with a stone bridge, the first one being started in 1176.
In 1757 the houses and shops on the bridge were demolished. A new bridge was built in 1831 to replace the old one. That bridge stood for only 140 years.
Then it was sold to an American oil company. And the wider, stronger London Bridge which replaced it still reaches across the Thames today. The present London bridge opened in 1973.
