It was necessary to bring up workers and peasants. Besides, southern merchant`s city preferred musical comedy, operetta and variety.
More than that in 1935 the construction of a new theatre building was finished. It was designed as a giant tractor according to the architects – Academician V.Shuchuko and Professor V. Gelfraikh`s project.
Its sizes and technical resources surpassed some leading European theatres. Stage equipment allowed producers to use unlimited opportunities. For example, during one of the performances a large military car was moving on the stage. Too wide halls, a huge foyer, auditorium for 2300seats were larger than in Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. Everything was made of marble, velvet and plush.
The front of the theatre building was decorated with high relieves, created by a splendid artist Sergey Korolkov, the Don Cossack. The world-famous sculpture and a pencil artist, he was the first to illustrate Sholokhov’s “ Tychy Don”. The high relieves on the theatre building are recognized to be a monument to free Cossacks died for their liberty.
The huge theatre needed an appropriate repertoire. So it was the main reason for arrival of Moscow actors. Cultural life began changing under the influence of Yuri Zavadsky and remarkable actors. The city couldn`t go on boring provincial life style when outstanding actors were there. Zavadsky organized so-called “Theatre Meetings” with spectators; they performed at factories and plants.
Once a week actors gathered to discuss current problems, forthcoming staging, literature, art, music. They followed an old tradition of E.Vahtangov one of the teachers of many actors.
In 1938 Zavadsky started working at a theatre school with students, future actors. He and his colleagues taught the students to be free and creative. Unfortunately, the school was closed when The Great Patriotic War began.
Capital theatres came on tour in Rostov more often. The city found the fame of the Southern Cultural Capital. More and more famous people appeared in Rostov Drama theatre. For example, very popular singer L.Utesov visited it because of his interest to orchestra and music. Capital theatres came on tour in Rostov more often. Maretskaya was always drowning in flowers after each performance. All the actors were loved greatly in Rostov.
V.Maretskaya acted some of the best parts in her life : Shakespeare’s Katarina and Goldoni’s Mirandolina
