Question Tags English Grammar Rules Логинова Ольга Анатольевна Учитель английского языка ГБОУ СОШ №180 г. Санкт-Петербург 2016 г.
A tag question is a short question added to the end of a positive or negative statement. Normally a positive statement is followed by a negative tag and a negative statement is followed by a positive tag. You and I are going to the party, aren't we? You aren't English, are you?
The statement and the tag are always separated by a comma. They finish work at five o'clock, don’t they? The bell has rung, hasn’t it?
Question tags are formed with the auxiliary or modal verb from the statement and the appropriate subject. We can't leave him alone, can we? He's rich, isn’t he?
When the statement contains a word with a negative meaning, the question tag needs to be positive. He never complains, does he? They rarely eat in restaurants, do they?
Exceptions I am - I am attractive, aren't I? Positive imperative - Stop crying, will / won't you? Negative imperative - Don't stop singing, will you? Let's - Let's go home, shall we? Have got (possession) - He has got a car, hasn't he?
Rosy is not going to come today, Lucas loves his father, You aren't strangers, I won't be fine, You don't look so good, Get me a ticket, I have a few chocolates to share, Antony scarcely listens in class, My father never smokes, Let’s get together for a party, Exercises is she? doesn't he? are you? will I? do you? will you? haven’t I? does he? does he? shall we?
