International Whale Day has been celebrated on 19 February since 1986 when International Whale Committee banned whale hunt after two hundred years of killing these sea giants. This ban is still active and it means than whale hunt as well as trade of whale products is prohibited. In Russia, Whale Day is celebrated since 2002.
National Whale Day provides an opportunity to raise awareness of people and discuss solutions to the threats whales are facing : whaling, noise pollution, vessel strikes, marine debris and by-catch, entanglement and climate change. What is National Whale Day?
There are about 40 whale species.
WORLD`S MOST ENDANGERED WHALES
Since 1986 Japan, Norway and Iceland together have killed over 25 000 whales.
W H A L I N G Whaling has been going on for thousands of years, and if we don't take actions, our oceans will be left lifeless.
In fact : 1. 16,000 whales have been murdered every year for 83 consecutive years. 2. Since 1986, over 25,000 whales have been murdered legally for “scientific research.”
