Christmas origins . Christmas celebrates the birth of Christ, who was probably born between 11 B. C. and 4 B. C. Some historians connect Christ’s birth to the famous star. It guided the three wise men. Christmas is really the work of Victorians combined with a few German traditions. Until that time Easter had always been the most important festival. In 1652 the puritans actually banned Christmas. A number of pagan traditions still survive, such as carol singing, the flames of the Xmas pudding, kissing under the mistletoe, and others.

Christmas stockings Father Christmas is based on a real person, St. Nicholas, which explains his other name 'Santa Claus' which comes from the Dutch 'Sinterklaas'. Nicholas was a Christian leader from Myra (in modern-day Turkey) in the 4th century AD. He was often seen, clad in red and white bishop's robes and riding on a donkey, handing out gifts to children. He was very shy, and wanted to give money to poor people without them knowing about it. It is said that one day, he climbed the roof of a house and dropped a purse of money down the chimney. It landed in the stocking which a girl had put to dry by the fire!

Описание слайда:

Carol singing The traditional period to sing carols was from St Thomas's Day (December 21) until the morning of Christmas Day. The word comes from the ancient Greek choros, which means "dancing in a circle," and from the Old French word carole, meaning "a song to accompany dancing." Englishmen have special songs which they sing during the Christmas season. The songs are known as carols and they are about when Jesus was born.

Описание слайда:

“Why” questions. Why is Christmas sometimes spelt Xmas ? The word for Christ in Greek is Xristos. The use of shortened form “ Xmas” became popular in Europe in the 1500s. Why are there oversized socks and stockings hanging on your mantel ? The original Saint Nicholas left his very first gifts of gold coins in the stockings of three poor girls who needed the money for their wedding dowries. The girls had hung their stockings on the mantel. Why is the day following Xmas day called “Boxing day” ? In English- speaking countries churches opened special boxes “alms box” in which people had placed gifts of money to poor people. Why is the red colour often used in Xmas decorations ? Red is the colour for blood that reminds us of the wounds of Christ and the stripes by which we are healed .Red is the colour of the God of love who suffered for humankind. It is the colour of His courage and His sacrifice.
