The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Irelend (the UK) is the official name of the British Kingdom. It occupies most of the territory of the British Isles and consists of four countries. They are England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Their capitals are London, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast.

The different parts of Britain have their own emblems. The red rose is the national emblem of England.
The thistle is the national emblem of Scotland.
The daffodil and the leek are the emblems of Wales.
And the Shamrock is the national emblem of Ireland.
There are a lot of interesting places in Great Britain, which are worth visiting. One of the most famous and mysterious arhaeological sites of Great Britain is Stonehenge. The huge stones of Stonehenge were trans-ported from Wales and set up in a circle on Salisbury Plain. The stones appear to be a kind of astronomical clock and they were used by the Druids for ceremonies marking the passing of the seaons.
The most famous lake in the world is Loch Ness, one of the lakes in Scotland,where some people think a large monster lives. But despite scientific expeditions, underwater exploration and millions of tourist photographs, people cannot prove - or disprove - her existence.
The Lake District is the lagest National Park in England. It contains plenty of beautiful lakes which gave it its name. More picturesque and diverse scenery can be found here than in any other area of Britain.
Great Britain is highly industrialized country. The main industrial centres are Birmingham, Sheffield, Manchester, Glasgow.
The population of the U.K. is nearly 60 million people. The people live mostly in towns and cities and their suburbs.
The capital of the country is London. English is the official language of the country.
Each of the four countries, England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales has their own food identity and there own national dishes.
Roast Beef and Yorkshire Puddings, Fish and Chips, Chicken Tikka Masala are the most famous English national dishes.
Irish stew is considered the national dish of Ireland.
Haggis is regarded as the Scottish national dish.
Cawl is the national dish of Wales.
There are fewer public holidays in Great Britain than in other European countries. They are: Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, May Day and others. Public holidays in GB are called bank holidays, because banks, offices and shops are closed.
The most popular holiday is Christmas. It is celebrated on the December 25. Every year the people of Norway give the city of London a present. It's a big Christmas tree and it stands in Trafalgar Square.
Besides public holidays there are festivals, such as Pancake Day, April Fool's Day, Hallowe'en, Guy Fawkes Night, St. Valentine's Day and others.
The UK is known for its outstanding people. It gave birth to such famous people as William Shakespeare, Robert Burns, Charles Dickens, Arthur Conan Doyle, Alexander Bell, Princess Diana, and others.
The U.K. Is a parliamentary monarchy. The British Parliament consists of two Houses: the House of Loads and the House of Commons.
With 1952 the queen of Great Britain is Elizabeth II.
Every year a lot of people all over the world spend their holidays travelling. Many of them are eager to see Great Britain. I hope I visit the U.K. some day and see this beautiful country with my own eyes too.
