WORDS OF WISDOM We create the world in which we live: if that world becomes unfit for human life, it is because we tire of our responsibility. Cyril Connolly (English critic)
Environmental issues There are the names of the environmental problems of today: - Littering - Air pollution, smog - Water pollution - Overcrowding, overpopulation - Endangered species, animals which are almost extinct - Destruction of natural resources
Environmental issues Modern transport saves us time and effort, but it congests and pollutes our towns and cities.
Genetically modified crops improve the quality of food, but they may have negative effects on the environment
Power stations provide electricity for our modern lifestyles, but they increase CO2 emissions, which cause global warming and climate change.
Cutting down trees provides wood and paper and creates space for new roads and buildings, but it destroys wildlife habitats and increase the amount of pollutants in the air.
Litter is not only ugly, but it can be harmful to wildlife. Small animals can get hurt on sharp cans or broken bottles.
It is interesting to know How long litter lasts: Traffic ticket 1 month Banana peel up to 6 months Wool sock 1 year Wooden stake 4 years Wax paper cup 5 years Painted wooden stake 13 years Tin can 100 years Plastic bottle up to 500 years Glass containers forever
Don’t buy drinks in plastic bottles Use paper, not plastic Recycle newspaper Use less paper don’t throw your old batteries in the trash Pick up litter Save water Turn out the lights and appliances when you are not using them How can we keep our Earth clean?
3 R Reduce Recycle Reuse Rubbish glass water Use of cars aluminium old clothes Amount of water paper old tins Paper consumption plastic fruit peelings Excessive packaging paper
Destroyed since World War 2 97% of our wildflower meadows 190.000 miles of hedgerow Half our ancient woodlands 75% of our heaths 98% of our unique lowland raised bogs, dug up for garden peat 22 flower species extinct since records began, 317 standing on the brink
Dear boys and girls! Take care of your motherland. Take only what you need from the land. Give more to the land than what you take. It is our challenge to restore an ecological balance on our planet and to leave it clean and healthy for future generations.
