The topicality of the project
Mobile communication and SMS – messages have become an integral part of people’s life nowadays. According to statistics, billions of SMS are sent by the population of the Earth every day. To make the speed of communication quicker, people invented a special SMS – language. A lot of people consider it a great convenience, as this language saves space, time and money of mobile users, while others think that it can spoil the classical English and affect other languages as well. That is why we think that the theme of our research is urgent nowadays.

What is SMS?
According to Adam Fendelman, the editor-in-chief of Midwest Business.com,
“SMS (short message service) is often referred to texting, sending text messages or text messaging from one cell /mobile phone to another.”

What is “texting language”
or “SMS –language”?
“Texting language or SMS-language is the collective term used for the shorthand way that people talk to each other using text messages,
e-mails, instant messaging and other forms of written contact”.

The invention of telegraphy could be rightly considered the beginning of history of SMS - language. Telegraph operators were the first to omit vowels in words while transmitting their messages.

1. Shortenings:
- Omission of the final part of the word:

- Omission of syllables at the beginning and the end of the word:

2. Contractions

In contractions that represent more than one word, omitted letters should be replaced with an apostrophe.

3. Initialisms
Abbreviations when only the initial letters of the words are used and which are pronounced as separate letters when they are spoken: they appeared during World War II in the telegrams of English and American soldiers home.

1. A wide usage of abbreviations, frequent ignoring of punctuation, spelling and grammar rules may lead to language destruction.
2. Modern generation of teenagers who uses a new way of self - expression via SMS – language might become illiterate in future.

Conclusion
1. Taking into account the results of the survey, we can come to such a conclusion: students of senior forms of our school use different forms of abbreviations of SMS – language, but most of them (70%) think that it doesn’t affect their literacy greatly.

Conclusion
2. The results of different surveys in the English – speaking countries revealed that influence of SMS - language on literacy of schoolchildren is insignificant. Our school survey also confirmed this fact, so we can say with certainty that SMS – language does not deteriorate any language, thus it has the right for existence.

It cannot be denied that mobile phones have become extremely necessary to the people’s community nowadays. This is simply because they can be carried and used in any place and at any time. Besides, being able to make or receive a phone call and to send SMS has become an integral part of our life. Sending short text messages is in fact very fast, convenient and cheap. Short messaging service (SMS) is a common tool for people’s communication these days. SMS messaging is used all over the globe. Mobile phone keypad, which has the same functions as the computer keyboard, gives rise to various abbreviations, short forms, emoticons and codes. Surprisingly, this so - called SMS - language is understood by the users easily, and it can be said that most people are using it at present. Lots of people believe that SMS - language is a great convenience, while others think that it spoils the classical English language and influences other languages as well. In this research paper we tried to investigate this problem and find the answer to this question.
