Preamble

Между ними на белом коне ехал человек в красном кафтане, с обнаженной саблею в руке: это был сам Пугачев. Он остановился; его окружили, и, как видно, по его повелению, четыре человека отделились и во весь опор подскакали под самую крепость. Мы в них узнали своих изменников. Один из них держал под шапкою лист бумаги; у другого на копье воткнута была голова Юлая, которую, стряхнув, перекинул он к нам чрез частокол. Голова бедного калмыка упала к ногам коменданта. Изменники кричали: «Не стреляйте; выходите вон к государю. Государь здесь!»

 

 

Хлестаков. Без чинов, прошу садиться.

Городничий и все садятся.

Я не люблю церемонии. Напротив, я даже всегда стараюсь проскользнуть незаметно. Но никак нельзя скрыться, никак нельзя! Только выйду куда-нибудь, уж и говорят: «Вон, говорят, Иван Александрович идет!» А один раз меня даже приняли за главнокомандующего: солдаты выскочили из гауптвахты и сделали ружьем. После уже офицер, который мне очень знаком, говорит мне: «Ну, братец, мы тебя совершенно приняли за главнокомандующего».

Анна Андреевна. Скажите как!

Хлестаков. С хорошенькими актрисами знаком. Я ведь тоже разные водевильчики… Литераторов часто вижу. С Пушкиным на дружеской ноге. Бывало, часто говорю ему: «Ну что, брат Пушкин?» — «Да так, брат, — отвечает, бывало, — так как-то все…» Большой оригинал.

Анна Андреевна. Так вы и пишете? Как это должно быть приятно сочинителю! Вы, верно, и в журналы помещаете?

Хлестаков. Да, и в журналы помещаю. Моих, впрочем, много есть сочинений: «Женитьба Фигаро»[9], «Роберт-Дьявол»[10], «Норма»[11]. Уж и названий даже не помню. И все случаем: я не хотел писать, но театральная дирекция говорит: «Пожалуйста, братец, напиши что-нибудь». Думаю себе: «Пожалуй, изволь братец!» И тут же в один вечер, кажется, все написал, всех изумил. У меня легкость необыкновенная в мыслях. Все это, что было под именем барона Брамбеуса[12], «Фрегат Надежды»[13] и «Московский телеграф»[14]… все это я написал.

Анна Андреевна. Скажите, так это вы были Брамбеус?

Хлестаков. Как же, я им всем поправляю статьи. Мне Смирдин[15] дает за это сорок тысяч.

Анна Андреевна. Так, верно, и «Юрий Милославский»[16] ваше сочинение?

Хлестаков. Да, это мое сочинение.

Анна Андреевна. Я сейчас догадалась.

Марья Антоновна. Ах, маменька, там написано, что это господина Загоскина сочинение.

Хлестаков. Ах да, это правда, это точно Загоскина; а вот есть другой «Юрий Милославский», так тот уж мой.

Анна Андреевна. Ну, это, верно, я ваш читала. Как хорошо написано!

Хлестаков. Я, признаюсь, литературой существую. У меня дом первый в Петербурге. Так уж и известен: дом Ивана Александровича. (Обращаясь ко всем.) Сделайте милость, господа, если будете в Петербурге, прошу, прошу ко мне. Я ведь тоже балы даю.

 

Бой безвестный, о котором
Речь сегодня поведем,
Был, прошел, забылся скоро...
Да и вспомнят ли о нем?

Бой в лесу, в кустах, в болоте,
Где война стелила путь,
Где вода была пехоте
По колено, грязь — по грудь;

Где брели бойцы понуро,
И, скользнув с бревна в ночи,
Артиллерия тонула,
Увязали тягачи.

Этот бой в болоте диком
На втором году войны
Не за город шел великий,
Что один у всей страны;

Не за гордую твердыню,
Что у матушки-реки,
А за некий, скажем ныне,
Населенный пункт Борки.

Он стоял за тем болотом
У конца лесной тропы,
В нем осталось ровным счетом
Обгорелых три трубы.

Там с открытых и закрытых
Огневых — кому забыть!—
Было бито, бито, бито,
И, казалось, что там бить?

Там в щебенку каждый камень,
В щепки каждое бревно.
Называлось там Борками
Место черное одно.

А в окружку — мох, болото,
Край от мира в стороне.
И подумать вдруг, что кто-то
Здесь родился, жил, работал,
Кто сегодня на войне.

Где ты, где ты, мальчик босый,
Деревенский пастушок,
Что по этим дымным росам,
Что по этим кочкам шел?

Бился ль ты в горах Кавказа
Или пал за Сталинград,
Мой земляк, ровесник, брат,
Верный долгу и приказу
Русский труженик-солдат.

 

В той живописной местности веселой Англии, которая орошается рекою Дон, в давние времена  простирались  обширные  леса,  покрывавшие  большую  часть красивейших холмов и долин, лежащих между Шеффилдом и  Донкастером.  Остатки этих огромных лесов  и  поныне  видны  вокруг  дворянских  замков  Уэнтворт, Уорнклиф-парк и близ Ротерхема. По преданию, здесь некогда обитал  сказочный уонтлейский  дракон;  здесь  происходили   ожесточенные   битвы   во   время междоусобных войн Белой и Алой Розы; и здесь же в старину собирались  ватаги тех отважных разбойников, подвиги и деяния которых  прославлены  в  народных

песнях.

     Таково  главное  место  действия  нашей  повести,  по  времени   же   - описываемые в ней события относятся к концу царствования  Ричарда  I,  когда возвращение короля из долгого плена казалось желанным,  но  уже  невозможным событием   отчаявшимся   подданным,   которые    подвергались    бесконечным притеснениям знати. Феодалы, получившие  непомерную  власть  в  царствование Стефана,  но  вынужденные  подчиняться  королевской  власти   благоразумного Генриха II, теперь снова бесчинствовали, как в прежние времена;  пренебрегая слабыми  попытками  английского  государственного   совета   ограничить   их произвол, они укрепляли свои замки, увеличивали число вассалов, принуждали к повиновению и вассальной зависимости всю  округу;  каждый  феодал  стремился собрать и возглавить такое войско, которое дало  бы  ему  возможность  стать влиятельным лицом в приближающихся государственных потрясениях.
