What do we know about the history of Christmas? It is celebrated оn December, 25 (January,7). The holiday is connected with the wonderful birth of Jesus Christ as it is described in the Holy Bible. On that day, about 2000 years ago, Jesus Christ was born in Bethlehem. When Jesus was born wise men from the East came to worship him. They gave the Child present. That's why people nowadays try to please their friends and relatives giving them Christmas presents.
What do we know about Christmas in Britain? The history of dates back over 4000 years. * One of the oldest Christmas custom in Britain is decorating houses and churches with greenery. Greenery is a symbol of everlasting life. Holly, ivy and mistletoe are popular Christmas plants. * One of the most popular Christmas traditions is the giving presents. In Britain Christmas stockings are left out on Christmas Eve. Farther Christmas fills them with presents. * The traditional Christmas pudding is round and dark colored. It is made with dried fruit, spices and brandy.
Do you know that… * St. Nicholas was very popular in our country. Later St. Nicholas was transformed into Grandfather Frost. There was one more figure called Baboushka. She used to bring gifts for children. The story is that Baboushka failed to give food and shelter to three wise men during their journey to visit the Christ Child. According to the tradition, she still roams the countryside searching for the Christ Child and visiting the homes of children during the Christmas season. * Christmas Eve dinner is meatless but festive. The most important ingredient is a special porridge called kutya. It is made of the wheat or other grains which symbolize hope and immortality, and honey and poppy seeds, which ensure happiness, success and untroubled rest. The kutya is eaten from the common dish to symbolize unity.
