Christmas in Great Britain
Christmas Day, December 25, is probably the most popular holiday in Great Britain. It is a family holiday.
Traditionally all relatives and friends give each other presents. So, before Christmas all the department stores and shops are crowded, everybody is choosing a present.
In general, people get prepared for this holiday very carefully. They decorate their houses in the traditional way. Christmas trees are set up in houses, in the streets and churches. They are always decorated with fairy lights, angels and small toys.

Every year there is a very big Christmas tree in the center of London, in Trafalgar Square. We can see many lights, toys and sweets all over this tree.
The fun starts the night before, on the 24th of December, Christmas Eve. On the eve of Christmas children hang their stockings, so that Santa Claus could put presents into them: oranges, sweets, nuts and if the child didn't behave properly Santa Claus can put there a piece of coal as punishment.
Usually the whole family has a big Christmas dinner, which is distinguished by a plum-pudding dessert. The air is filled with the sounds of Christmas carols, the stores are decorated in red and green, and dozens of Santa Clauses are on the streets.
In England people make Christmas pudding before Christmas. Everyone in family stirs the pudding and makes a wish. It’s a traditional meal, which people cook for Christmas party. When the pudding is hot they put 5-penny pieces in it, and sometimes a little silver horseshoe, a button and a ring. If you find a button in your piece of pudding you will be rich, a horseshoe means happiness and good luck, a ring - marriage.
The 26th December – Boxing Day is an extra holiday after Christmas. This day people usually give and receive presents.
Everywhere you can see slogans "A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year".
